Serological Evaluation Of Hsv-1 And Hsv-2 Infection In Pregnancy, Ni̇zami̇ Duran
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
We performed a serological evaluation of herpes simplex virus (HSV) infections at the time of labor. In order to determine the seroprevalence of asymptomatic HSV infections in pregnant women, blood samples were collected for antibody measurement from 130 randomly selected pregnant women. Presence of HSV IgG and IgM antibodies in the serum samples was tested by ELISA. The prevalence of HSV-1 gG1 antibodies was 90% (117/130), that of HSV-2 gG2 antibodies was 63.1% (82/130) and that of HSV-2 IgM antibodies was 13.8% (18/130). Eight (44.4%) of the pregnant women with HSV-2 IgM were at the same time found to have …

It is not clear whether Helicobacter pylori (Hp) infection affects insulin levels and insulin sensitivity. We aimed to determine insulin sensitivity and beta cell function, and to evaluate serum lipids in subjects with and without Hp infection. Eighty non-obese young adult males, 40 of whom were Hp positive and 40 were negative, were included in the study. Two endoscopic biopsy specimens were obtained from each subject. Height, weight and waist-hip circumference were measured, and body mass index (BMI) was calculated. Serum glucose, total, HDL, LDL and VLDL-cholesterol and triglyceride levels were determined. Body fat mass and percentage were determined by …

Unsuccessful cadaveric kidney transplantation still remains as an important problem in organ transplantation. Cold storage solutions are not very efficient for kidney preservation. Vitamin E is an important dietary antioxidant, which may play a vital role in preventing free radical perfusion injury. We investigated the effect of vitamin E on kidney preservation with Euro-Collins (EC) solution using the isolated perfused dog kidney model. Recipients were randomly divided into 3 groups: group 1 (n = 6), immediately reperfused with EC solution, given laboratory pelleted diet and drinking water for 4 weeks; and group 2 (n = 6), flushed, and stored with …

Recovery Of 1-Chloro-2,4-Dinitrobenzene Detoxification By N-Acetyl- L-Cysteine In Glutathione Predepleted Human Erythrocytes, Deni̇z Yildiz, C.Işil Kuran
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Glutathione is an important thiol-containing compound involved in the detoxification process in erythrocytes. Its thiol group reacts with a variety of xenobiotics in a glutathione S-transferase catalyzed reaction to form conjugates that are effluxed from the erythrocytes by an ATP dependent transport mechanism. A well studied experimental system is the transport of the conjugate of glutathione and 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene. We investigated whether N-acetyl-L-cysteine protects the free-SH content and restores 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene detoxification in erythrocytes or replaces glutathione in detoxification process in glutathione predepleted erythrocytes. Our results indicate that N-acetyl-L-cysteine restores the intracellular free-SH content following depletion by 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene and N-ethylmaleimide. N-acetyl-L-cysteine (10 …

Comparative Cytotoxicity Of Fludarabine In Human Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells And In The Promyelocytic Leukemia Cell Line (Hl60), A. Lale Doğan
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Fludarabine is an inhibitor of DNA/RNA synthesis with antitumor activity on lymphoproliferative malignancies. We investigated the dose-dependent cytotoxic effects of the drug on human peripheral blood mononuclear cells, the HL60 cell line and the differentiated HL60 cells. Dimethylformamide was used for the neutrophilic differentiation of HL60 cells and the MTT assay was used to estimate drug cytotoxicity. Undifferentiated tumor cells had higher proliferation rates compared to the differentiated subline. There was 57% cell death in HL60 cells at a dose of 5 µg/ml of the drug. On the other hand, in differentiated HL60 cells and nonmalignant cells, cell death did …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Thirty-five methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) clinical isolates were collected from 3 hospitals in the northern and southern parts of Palestine between February and May 1998. These isolates were typed by ribosome spacer PCR (RS-PCR) and arbitrarily primed PCR (AP-PCR). RS-PCR generated 9 different genotypes. The use of AP-PCR provided a high resolution typing method and allowed us to define 11 different clusters. Three major clusters, however, based on the combination of both typing methods, spread throughout the neonatal and intensive care units of Rafidya Hospital during the entire period.

Exposure to 70% N2O evokes a robust antinociceptive effect in C57BL/6 (B6) but not in DBA/2 (D2) inbred mice. This study was conducted to identify quantitative trait loci (QTL) in the mouse genome that might determine responsiveness to N2O. Offspring from the F2 generation bred from B6 and D2 progenitors exhibited a broad range of responsiveness to N2O antinociception as determined by the acetic acid-induced abdominal constriction test. QTL analysis was then used to dissect this continuous trait distribution into component loci, and to map them to broad chromosomal regions. To this end, …
