Astaxanthin is a naturally occurring carotenoid found in salmon and microalgae that has antioxidative properties. Previous research shows dietary supplementation may result in increased endogenous antioxidant status and reduced markers of oxidative stress (OS). Research suggests OS causes increased risk for cardiometabolic and other chronic diseases, making it important to find interventions that can decrease occurrence of OS. While astaxanthin has been shown to be antioxidative, most studies observing the impact of astaxanthin has on OS has involved rodent models, therefore human trials are needed. Sedentariness and increased body fat are the leading risk factors for developing insulin resistance, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. We have shown that muscle contraction induced by electrical pulse stimulation increase GLUT4 content in an in vitro primary cell culture model. Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) is a novel alternative strategy to induce muscle contraction in humans. Although widely used in rehabilitation settings to prevent muscle atrophy, effectiveness of NMES-induced muscle contractions in improving metabolic health is not clear. Both moderate-intensity continuous exercise (MICE) and high-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) has been reported to reduce the magnitude of postprandial lipemia and glycemia. It is unclear if performing MICE or HIIE of similar duration and work would have a comparable effect on postprandial lipemia or glycemia. Swimming is a favorable and ideal modality of exercise for individuals with obesity and arthritis as it encompasses a minimal weight-bearing stress and a reduced heat load. However, the available evidence indicates that regular swimming may not be effective in reducing body weight and body fatness. A current hypothesis is that exercise in cold water somehow stimulates appetite. Citrulline malate has been proposed to aid in reducing fatigue by increasing blood flow through promoting an increase in the nitric oxide synthase pathway along with the ability to remove ammonia and lactate accumulations. Results on the effectiveness of an acute supplementation are mixed, but it is proposed that regular consumption may help to attenuate the onset of fatigue during exercise. Two critical components of muscular performance are muscular strength (e.g., the maximal load that can be lifted for a given exercise) and muscular endurance (e.g., the maximal number of repetitions that can be performed at a given load). When seeking improvements in muscular performance, it is common to employ nutritional strategies that create an energy surplus and a resultant gain in body mass. Diets of adult individuals with mid-spectrum (stages III and IV) Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) remain understudied. The 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans food patterns based on the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA) in concert with the National Kidney Foundation Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (NKF KDOQI) guidelines are advised to individuals with CKD. Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) remains the best method for tracking CKD progression, yet relationships between self-reported dietary intake and eGFR are understudied. PURPOSE:Firefighters (FF) experience acute physiological and psychological stressors such as disturbed sleep patterns, frequent snacking, smoke exposure, and intense physical exertion, likely contributing to a significant risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and sudden cardiac death. Additionally, FF have high obesity prevalence rates and low cardiovascular fitness levels. Proper dietary and exercise regime interventions may decrease CVD risk. Carbohydrate-restricted diets (CRD) may benefit FF health through increased metabolic flexibility, decreased fat mass, and improved body composition, without negatively affecting the strength and aerobic performance. Women with hypothyroidism report undesirable skeletal muscle symptoms at rest and during exercise. The severity of skeletal muscle symptoms may influence an individual’s willingness and capacity to exercise. PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine the relationship between exercise and skeletal muscle symptoms at rest and during exercise in women with hypothyroidism. Measurement of resting metabolic rate (RMR) is an important factor for weight management. Previous research has reported several variables to estimate RMR such as body size, percent fat (%BF), age, and sex; however, little is known regarding the effect of circumference measures in estimating RMR. Time restricted feeding (TRF) is a form of intermittent fasting in which all calories are consumed within a certain amount of time (i.e. 6-8 hrs) only water is ingested for the remainder of the day. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2015) declared that 80% of U.S. adults do not meet exercise recommendations by ACSM. A high intramyocellular lipid (IMCL) has been associated not only with insulin resistance, obesity, and type 2 diabetes; but also in insulin sensitive endurance trained athletes – known as “athlete’s paradox”. Prolonged endurance exercise performances provide a unique model for investigating the combined effects of oxidative stress and eccentric muscle contraction on differential gene expression with nutritional interventions known to blunt inflammation. When used alone, both caffeine and sodium-aided hyperhydration (SAH) can be ergogenic. Caffeine, when used with SAH, promotes diuresis, but hyperhydration can be achieved, albeit at lower levels than with SAH alone. In previous caffeine and SAH work, caffeine induced diuresis occurred only within 15 min of consumption of a bolus of caffeine, NaCl, and H2O. This suggests that caffeine-induced diuresis may occur for only 15 min after its consumption, and/or that the diuretic effect of caffeine is dependent on hydration levels. When used alone, both caffeine and sodium-aided hyperhydration (SAH) can be ergogenic. Although caffeine use in conjunction with SAH promotes diuresis, hyperhydration can be achieved, albeit at lower levels compared to SAH alone. Previous caffeine and SAH work has suggested most of the caffeine induced diuresis occurs within 15 min of consumption of a bolus of caffeine, sodium and water. This response suggests that caffeine-induces diuresis for only 15 min following its consumption, and/or that the diuretic effects of caffeine are dependent on hydration levels.
