A Phenomenological Study On The Followership And Follower Dissent Experience Of Black/African American Female Healthcare Leaders, Shella M. Miller
A Phenomenological Study On The Followership And Follower Dissent Experience Of Black/African American Female Healthcare Leaders, Shella M. Miller
PhD in Organizational Leadership
Although followership has traditionally been viewed as self-explanatory and innate, it is critical to leadership success and deserves equal scrutiny. Despite its recognized importance to leadership, followership theory remains underdeveloped and understudied, particularly in relation to intersectional factors, such as race and gender and the followership experience of individuals. This gap is particularly salient in today's diverse healthcare settings, where diverse representation and effective leadership and followership are critical for addressing pressing healthcare challenges, including health disparities. Black/African American women are disproportionately represented in entry-level roles compared to leadership positions within healthcare and often face unique challenges related to their …

A Nurse-Driven Screening Process To Increase Icu Palliative Care Utilization, Sara L. Stock
Doctor of Nursing Practice Final Project Abstract
Purpose
A scholarly project aimed to increase palliative care by 25% for intensive care unit patients in eight weeks by integrating nurse-driven screening process into multidisciplinary rounds.
Background
Palliative care provides valuable mental, emotional, and spiritual support for patients and families. These benefits are available to any patient with a disease process causing symptoms affecting quality of life. Palliative care is falsely equated with hospice care, leading to further delay. The original referral model relied only on intensivist identification of eligibility The project was implemented in a 20-bed medical and surgical ICU in a community hospital in the Houston area. …

Background: Unplanned reattendances (UR) are an important quality indicator in the emergency department (ED). Understanding the risk factors associated with UR can aid clinicians in optimizing the allocation of time and resources, as well as targeted counselling for this specific group of patients. In this study, we aimed to compare patient characteristics between children who attended a pediatric emergency department (ED) with unplanned reattendances (UR) and those without UR. We also aimed to study the association between healthcare delivery factors such as timing of the attendance, patient load, changeover months for rotating junior doctors, presence of supervision, and rate of …
Reducing Falls Through Enhanced Staff Compliance With The Fall Bundle, Lester Lubuguin
Reducing Falls Through Enhanced Staff Compliance With The Fall Bundle, Lester Lubuguin
All Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Scholarly Projects
Problem:
Patient falls represent a critical issue that incurs significant health and economic burdens for both individuals and healthcare organizations. Annually, falls and fall-related injuries are responsible for nearly 3 million emergency room visits and 1 million hospitalizations, costing an estimated $50 billion. Evidence suggests that a multi-factorial approach—often referred to as a "fall bundle"—is effective in reducing the incidence of falls. However, staff non-compliance with this bundle can undermine its effectiveness.
Aim of the Project:
The project aimed to reduce the incidence of falls by enhancing staff compliance with fall prevention measures through audits and feedback conducted by designated …

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
To thrive in today’s competitive markets, organizations must harness the insights of all members. This requires employees to feel comfortable collaborating and sharing diverse knowledge—a process enabled by psychological safety. Although extensively studied over the past two decades, how and when psychological safety develops remains unclear. This research addresses these gaps by exploring temporal changes in psychological safety and examining the role of team inputs, processes, and interventions in shaping psychological safety perceptions at individual and team levels. This study utilized a quasi-experimental design with repeated and independent measures in a sample of 74 medical and physician assistant students. Within-subject …

An Integrated Theoretical Socio-Technical Framework For Implementing Service Robots’ Integration In Healthcare, Sujatha Alla
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Healthcare workers, either clinical or non-clinical, are obligated to serve patients. However, lack of a sufficient number of professionals leads to burnout, severe stress, and, consequently, decreased quality of services. In this context, very few countries have been successful in employing service robots to perform dull, dirty, and/or dangerous tasks related to patient wellbeing/healthcare, while most countries are still skeptical about it. As robotics advances, there is an opportunity for healthcare to take advantage of this technology to reduce personnel workload and to reduce the possibility of exposure to contagious pathogens. However, healthcare is a vulnerable environment and requires critical …

Providing End-Of-Life Counseling: A Narrative Inquiry, Carol Hecht, Sibyl West
Adultspan Journal
This qualitative study aimed to address the gap in the research related to end-of-life counseling by exploring the experiences of counselors working with clients at end of life. While counseling literature and education are lacking regarding end of life, many counselors will work alongside clients approaching death. The purpose of this study was twofold: (a) to better understand the nuanced experiences of counselors providing end-of-life counseling and (b) to explore the supports and preparations helpful for counselors to provide end-of-life counseling. A narrative approach, using the Listening Guide (Gilligan, 2015), was employed to analyze and present the stories of three …

Considerations Of Medicare Telehealth Services With Older Adults, Sonah Kho, Amanda Dediego
Adultspan Journal
The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic set in motion a rapid expansion of mental health services offered via telehealth. With this rapid expansion came the need to examine how policy and practice should be shaped in a future where telehealth is considered common in counseling practice. For counselors to understand how to support older adult clients in using telehealth services, they must understand telehealth policy. Following the eligibility of licensed counselors to participate in Medicare, counselors need to stay abreast of regulatory changes regarding restrictions and regulations on use of telehealth for mental and behavioral health services, including video and …

Adequate dosing of antimicrobials is paramount for treating infections in critically ill patients undergoing kidney replacement therapy; however, little is known about antimicrobial removal by sustained low-efficiency dialysis (SLED). The objective was to quantify the removal of cefepime, daptomycin, meropenem, piperacillin–tazobactam, and vancomycin in patients undergoing SLED. Adult patients ≥18 years with acute kidney injury (AKI) or end-stage kidney disease receiving one of the select antimicrobials and requiring SLED were included. Blood and dialysate flow rates were maintained at 250 and 100 mL/min, respectively. Simultaneous arterial and venous blood samples for the analysis of antibiotic concentrations were collected hourly for …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
BACKGROUND: Health systems responsiveness (HSR) is the ability of systems to respond to legitimate non-health expectations of the population. The concept of HSR by the World Health Organization (WHO) includes respect for dignity, individual autonomy, confidentiality, prompt attention to care, availability of basic amenities, choice of provider, access to social support networks, and clarity of communication. The WHO tool is applied globally to assess HSR in low, middle, and high-income countries.
OBJECTIVE: We have revised the conceptual framework of HSR following a rigorous systematic review and made it specific for low- and middle-income countries (L&MICs). This study is designed to …

Decreasing Utilization Of Indwelling Urinary Catheters, Stacie Lomibao Fujimoto
Decreasing Utilization Of Indwelling Urinary Catheters, Stacie Lomibao Fujimoto
Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
Increased utilization and prolonged dwell times of indwelling urinary catheters (IUCs) are directly related to the risk of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs)- the fifth most common type of healthcare associated infection (HAI). The National Health and Safety Network (NHSN) uses the Standardized Utilization Ratio (SUR) metric to measure and compare device utilization in acute care hospitals across the nation. The national target SUR benchmark is 1.0, and a SUR under 1.0 indicates less device usage than NHSN predicts on an inpatient unit. In 2022 a Neuro Med-Surg unit experienced an overall SUR of 1.047 with 2 CAUTIs observed. A …
