National Longitudinal Survey Of Public Health Systems: Comparative Report Of 2012 Results, Glen Mays

The third wave of the National Longitudinal Survey of Public Health Systems was fielded in 2012 in a nationally-representative cohort of local communities. The survey measures the availability of 20 recommended public health activities in the community, the range of organizations that participate in performing each activity, and the perceived effectiveness of each activity. Prior waves of the survey were fielded in 1998 and 2006. Local health officials report data for this survey and receive a customized report of results that compare data for their community with national norms and with "peer groups" of similar communities. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 and the Supreme Court’s related decision have significantly shifted the health care landscape for safety net providers. Federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) are a mainstay of primary care for the uninsured and those with limited access to care. This paper focuses on the impact of health reform on FQHCs given the significant federal investment in them through grants, Medicaid, and Medicare reimbursement. Where noteworthy, the effect on non-FQHC community clinics is also discussed. This paper documents the preliminary development of a framework for evaluating organisational change processes during the implementation of an electronic nursing documentation system in residential aged care facilities. It starts with a brief outline of organisational change processes. This is followed by a more detailed exposition of the principles underlying complex adaptive systems (CAS) theory, where we explain how mathematical concepts can be used to illuminate qualitative research approaches. Finally we present some preliminary findings on the facilitators and barriers for the introduction of the electronic documentation system, explained with reference to the CAS theory, based on analysis of interviews …

Gender Does Not Influence The Relationship Between Posterior Cruciate Ligament Design And Patient-Reported Outcomes In Patients Receiving Primary Unilateral Total Knee Arthroplasty, Ryan Milan

The effect of the interaction between gender and posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) prosthesis design on patient-reported outcomes is an understudied area of research. We evaluated 1613 patients, from the Ontario Joint Replacement Registry (2001-2006), who underwent primary total knee replacement. This study investigated the impact of the gender-PCL design interaction on Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) change scores and patient satisfaction, by performing linear regression analysis, using full-adjusted models that also included the gender-PCL prosthesis design interaction variable. PCL prosthesis design did not affect WOMAC change scores or satisfaction (p>0.05). Moreover, Gender did not influence either …

This paper presents core principles of curriculum design. These principles were used as categories following analysis of submissions made to the Nursing Education Forum in Ireland between 1999/2000. This forum was established following a Commission on Nursing, set up to examine the future of nursing in Ireland. The transition from curriculum design to curriculum development is considered and a summary of curriculum activities is outlined. The paper concludes by presenting questions to focus further discussion.

This poster outlines how action learning sets were used to support organisational change initiatives as part of a Master’s programme. Evaluations were carried out from the students’ perspectives (n= 102) via the ALSE tool1. Focus groups (two) were held with thirteen facilitators, who were all healthcare professionals at a senior level in their own organisations. Data was analysed by Microsoft Excel for the survey and via content analysis for the focus group meetings. Students communicated with their facilitators and members by email or chat rooms at least once between meetings. They were focused on progressing their change projects and came …

The Multi-Network Practice and Outcome Variation Examination Study (MPROVE) engages public health practice-based research networks (PBRNs) in the collection and analysis of measures of public health delivery across a large number of local practice settings in order to examine the causes and consequences of practice variation in public health. This document summarizes the final set of measures selected for the MPROVE study, including measures of the reach, volume, intensity, and quality of public health delivery in three domains of activity: chronic disease prevention, communicable disease control, and environmental health protection.

The word wiki is from the Hawaiian term wiki-wiki, which means to do something quickly (1). The term became prominent because of the online encyclopedia Wikipedia (www.wikipedia.org), which now has more than 2 million articles contributed by tens of thousands of people.
