Converting Paper Faxes To Electronic Faxes To Improve Patient Care, Decrease Paper Burden, And Improve Staff And Provider Satisfaction: A Quality Improvement Project, Stephanie Green, Amanda Lindenberg

Problem Statement/Question: Reliance on provider and administrative staff to be physically present at Adele Hall creates delays in delivery of completed documentation. Delays of up to 7-14 days are possible. Delays in completion result in outside offices resending (wasted duplication of work) requests and delay downstream delivery of equipment/services, ultimately negatively impacting patient care. Over a 2-week period in November 2022, it took at average of 6.08 days for time to completion of requests. Over a 4-week period in August 2022, divisional outgoing faxes in response to requests averaged 79.5 per week. In addition, reliance on hardcopies of requests increases …

Background: Children’s High Acuity Monitoring Program (CHAMP®) is a software platform for pediatric remote patient monitoring. It is used with a proactive, personalized, pediatric care model providing a link for communication with a specialized healthcare team to patients and families in their homes. Successful implementation since 2014 includes: adoption at 12 pediatric hospitals and over 870 infants with a survival of 96.5% (down from 20% in 2012). This work led our team to engage leadership to discuss a remote patient monitoring department with new monitoring devices and expanded access to pediatric conditions.

Primary Venous Thromboprophylaxis In Pediatric Oncology Patients, Kyra Mccarty May 2022

Primary Venous Thromboprophylaxis In Pediatric Oncology Patients, Kyra Mccarty

Research Days

Background: The Virchow’s Triad principles of venous stasis, endothelial damage, and hypercoagulability are all features of malignancy and contribute to the increased risk venous thromboembolism (VTE) seen in oncology patients. Additionally, certain chemotherapy treatments, presence of a central venous catheter and immobility are also intrinsically associated with malignancy diagnoses and exacerbate this risk. However, much debate exists over the use of thromboprophylaxis in the pediatric population, primarily due to lack of evidence regarding safety and efficacy, primarily the risk of major bleeding. Multiple retrospective studies have attempted to identify the primary risk factors for VTE in this pediatric oncology patient …

It is important for a pediatric diabetes clinic to provide support and prepare adolescents for success when they transfer to adult care.

Aim Statement: In our diabetes clinic, patients are eligible for transition assessment if they are over age 17 years without a documented discussion in the past 1 year. A review of clinic data between October 2021 and November 2021 revealed that an average of …

Local Implementation And Standardization Of The Pediatric Severe Traumatic Brain Injury Guidelines, Michelle Brown

Research Days

Problem Statement/Question: Severe pediatric Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. Evidence-based guidelines leave gaps in how to best implement and deliver standardized care on the local hospital level.

Background/Project Intent (Aim Statement): We aim to improve clinical outcomes for severe TBI patients (Glasgow Coma Scale ≤8) with standardization of care according to updated evidence-based guidelines. We will target early guideline adherence (initial 72 hours of PICU admission) with a focus on 1) targeted temperature management (TTM40mmHg).

Methods (include PDSA cycles): The Children’s Mercy Hospital Pediatric ICU Severe TBI Guidelines were updated after the 3rd …

Improving The Rate Of Ppsv-23 Vaccination In Children With Type I Diabetes, Henry S. Jeng Dr

Research Days

Background/Project Intent (Aim Statement): The routine use of PCV-13 has resulted in a dramatic reduction in the incidence of pneumococcal infections among young children. However, serious pneumococcal infections caused by additional vaccine serotypes continue to occur in older children with high-risk conditions.1 As per the CDC, children with Diabetes should receive the PPSV-23 vaccine beginning at 2 years of age and at least 8 weeks after their last indicated dose of PCV-13.2 A review of division data from March 2016 to November 2018 revealed that only 2.6% of the eligible patient population with Diabetes have received the PPSV-23 vaccine.
