Background: Patients with cancer often experience symptoms related to disease, complications, and treatment. One potential method of alleviating these symptoms is traditional Chinese herbal medications (TCHM). This rapid review explores the role of traditional Chinese herbal medications in treating cancer-related symptoms in older adults.

IMPORTANCE: The prevalence of depression is higher in cancer survivors than in the general population. As the long-term cancer survivor population increases, it is increasingly important to understand risk factors for late-onset depression.

OBJECTIVE: To identify risk factors associated with late-onset depression in long-term (5-year) survivors of breast, prostate, or colorectal cancer.

DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This retrospective cohort study used 2022 linkage of Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) and Medicare data to identify 5-year survivors of breast, prostate, or colorectal cancer 66 years or older who were enrolled in fee-for-service Medicare and had no previous depression diagnosis. Valemetostat tosylate (valemetostat) is an oral, potent, dual inhibitor of enhancer of zeste homolog (EZH)2/1, under investigation in non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHLs) and solid tumors. In vitro, it inhibits cytochrome P450 3A (CYP3A) and P-glycoprotein (P-gp) when combined with sensitive CYP3A or P-gp substrates. This drug–drug interaction (DDI) sub-study is part of the phase 1 trial of valemetostat monotherapy (DS3201-A-J101; NCT02732275), assessing the effect of valemetostat on the pharmacokinetics (PK) of sensitive CYP3A and P-gp substrates midazolam and digoxin, respectively, in patients with relapsed or refractory NHL, and its safety and efficacy. BACKGROUND: Factors influencing in-hospital mortality in patients with well-differentiated gastroenteropancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (GEP-NETs) remain understudied, highlighting gaps in optimizing acute clinical outcomes. This study aimed to identify sociodemographic and clinical predictors of all-cause in-hospital mortality in this population.

METHODS: Using 2016 - 2020 data from the National Inpatient Sample (NIS), patients with malignant well-differentiated GEP-NETs were identified via the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10) codes. The primary outcome was in-hospital mortality. Sociodemographic and clinical variables (heart failure (HF), malnutrition, Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI), and tumor site) were analyzed using multivariable logistic regression.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac myxoma is a benign tumor, typically originating in the left atrium, and is often linked to Carney complex. In our literature review, there are no case reports of cardiac myxoma in patients with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2).

CASE SUMMARY: A 60-year-old man presented with dizziness and was found to have meningioma and vestibular schwannoma, consistent with NF2. Cardiac myxoma was incidentally diagnosed through echocardiography and confirmed by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging and tissue pathology. The mass was surgically resected. The patient was offered genetic testing; however, he decided to not undergo further testing.

A 23-year-old man with multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1 (MEN 1) with pancreatic tail masses and Cushing syndrome (status after transsphenoidal adenomectomy) presented with a slow-growing, asymptomatic right lower lung lobe mass confirmed to be an atypical carcinoid tumor by pathologic staging following successful basilar segmentectomy with mediastinal lymphadenectomy. Pulmonary carcinoid tumor (PCT) is a rare neoplasm in patients with MEN 1, but there is limited data on trends in atypical versus typical carcinoid tumors in these patients. We sought to examine the national inpatient sample database to describe in-hospital outcomes among smokers with EOCRC. The NIS was searched for hospitalizations of adult patients with EOCRC, defined as all-cause colorectal cancer in patients 50 years old or younger. In this nationally representative population‐based retrospective cohort study, hyperlipidemia was associated with higher mortality.

Introduction Right ventricular thrombi are uncommon, usually found with concurrent pulmonary emboli and associated with significant mortality. They often originate from deep vein thrombi but may also be due to primary intracardiac processes . A right ventricular thrombus can be an unexpected marker for underlying malignancies, including esophageal cancer. This occurs due to the hypercoagulable state often induced by malignancy. Here we report a presentation where the identification of a right ventricular thrombus led to the diagnosis of esophageal cancer. Introduction: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths globally. Despite its severity, fewer than half of eligible Americans undergo annual screening. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends CRC screening from age 45 to 75, with personalized assessments for those aged 76 to 85. The current CRC screening rate at the Medical City North Hills Internal Medicine Residents’ Clinic is 9.3%, significantly below the target rate of over 66%. Background: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs), including pembrolizumab, are increasingly used in cancer therapy, particularly for melanoma. While effective, these agents are associated with various immune-related adverse events (IRAEs), including endocrine disorders like diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). This report aims to contribute to the understanding of pembrolizumab-induced DKA, especially in patients with pre-existing prediabetes. Case Presentation: A 78-year-old male with a history of melanoma, prediabetes, and other comorbidities developed DKA after 1.5 years of pembrolizumab treatment. He presented with symptoms of weakness, thirst, dry mouth, and diarrhea, alongside severe hyperglycemia and metabolic acidosis. Diagnostic workup confirmed DKA, and his clinical improvement followed …
