Bilateral Spontaneous Osteonecrosis Of The Knee (Sponk) In Young Male: A Case Report, Hans Drawbert, Mason Poffenbarger, Joshua Payne Jan 2024

Bilateral Spontaneous Osteonecrosis Of The Knee (Sponk) In Young Male: A Case Report, Hans Drawbert, Mason Poffenbarger, Joshua Payne

North Texas GME Research Forum 2024

Introduction: Spontaneous osteonecrosis of the knee (SPONK) is a relatively uncommon disease consisting of a focal, subchondral lesion thought to be a subchondral insufficiency fracture that has progressed to collapse and may lead to end-stage osteoarthritis of the knee. There are several treatment options, including nonsurgical and surgical measures but almost 80% of cases end up requiring surgery, usually consisting of unicompartmental or total knee arthroplasty. However, despite these treatment options, there remains no good option for young patients who present with SPONK in large areas of their distal femur or disease in both medial and lateral condyles. Case …

Ossifying Fibroma And Central Giant Cell Granuloma, A Hybrid Tumor In The Maxilla, Jason Phung, Robert Bender, Susana Ferra

East Florida Division GME Research Day 2024

Introduction: Ossifying fibromas (OF) and central giant cell granulomas (CGCG) are benign lesions of the jaw. The presence of a hybrid lesion consisting of OF and CGCG is exceedingly rare.

Case summary: A 28-year-old male presented with complaints of nasal congestion and loud snoring worsening over six months. CT scan revealed a 2.2 x 1.5 x 1.2 cm radiolucent lesion involving the right maxillary sinus. During endoscopic sinus excision, a friable light tan and hemorrhagic lesion was seen occupying the right maxillary sinus with underlying bone destruction. Intraoperative pathology evaluation revealed no malignancy.

Results: Histologic examination revealed a biphasic …

A Retrospective Study On The Effect Of Raas Pathway Inhibitors At Decreasing The Risk Of Acute Coronary Syndrome In Hypertensive Patients With Rheumatoid Arthritis As Compared To Other Antihypertensives, Yousuf Sherwani, Asad Risvi, Senthil Thambidorai Jan 2024

A Retrospective Study On The Effect Of Raas Pathway Inhibitors At Decreasing The Risk Of Acute Coronary Syndrome In Hypertensive Patients With Rheumatoid Arthritis As Compared To Other Antihypertensives, Yousuf Sherwani, Asad Risvi, Senthil Thambidorai

North Texas GME Research Forum 2024

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic multi-system inflammatory disease of which is characterized by articular and extra-articular involvement. Patients with RA have a higher risk of mortality when compared with the general population, which is due predominantly to increased cardiovascular disease. Due to the higher incidence of CVD and MI in RA patients it has been postulated that enhanced systemic inflammation plays an important role in the pathogenesis of CVD in RA patients. Previous studies have shown that ant inflammatory medication such as systemic steroids and immune blockers have been shown to decrease the risk of MI in patients with …

Ciprofloxacin-Induced Peripheral Neuropathy: A Case Report, Alexander Refaeian, Eric L. Vest, Michael Schmidt, Jorge D. Guerra, Mohd N. Refaei, Michael Refaeian, Ryan A. Floresca, Manouchehr Refaeian

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Introduction

Fluoroquinolones, a class of antibiotics, are commonly employed in the treatment of a wide array of bacterial infections. Recognized for their effectiveness against a broad spectrum of pathogens, fluoroquinolones have played a pivotal role in managing conditions like urinary tract infections and respiratory diseases. Nevertheless, their usage is not without contention due to their association with a variety of adverse effects, including tendon rupture and the less frequently reported issue of peripheral neuropathy.

Case Presentation

We present the case of a 42-year-old male who developed peripheral neuropathy several days after completing a 10-day course of ciprofloxacin for gastroenteritis. The …

East Florida Division GME Research Day 2023

Avascular necrosis (AVN) of the second metatarsal is a debilitating condition characterized by the loss of blood supply to the bone, leading to cellular death and potential collapse of the affected metatarsal head. This study presents a comprehensive review of contemporary literature to elucidate the spectrum of treatment options available for managing AVN of the second metatarsal.

A systematic search of reputable medical databases yielded a total of 38 pertinent studies detailing various treatment modalities for AVN of the second metatarsal. The review encompassed surgical and non-surgical approaches, evaluating their efficacy, long-term outcomes, and complications.

Non-surgical interventions, such as protected …

Conservative Management Of Low Back Pain, Se Won Lee, Dan Nguyen, Denny Mack, Eric Aguila, Mary Thomas, Karyn Doddy

HCA Healthcare Journal of Medicine

Low back pain (LBP) is frequently encountered in outpatient clinics and affects individual patients and society in general with decreased physical function, quality of life, disability, and/or economic burden. Although most acute LBP resolves on its own, recurrent and chronic LBP is a common reason for outpatient clinic visits. This review explores pragmatic approaches to LBP in the clinical setting, focusing on recognizing prognostic factors, initial approaches to evaluation, including selective imaging, and conservative management including patient education, therapeutic exercises and bracing.

A Case Of Pott's Disease: Typical Presentation Of An Uncommon Disease In The United States, Neha Patel, Ravi Patel, Marek Krysztofiak, K V. Sundaresh

West Florida Division GME Research Day 2020

Pott’s disease (PD), also known as tuberculosis spondylitis, is a rare disease of the spine which is typically caused by extraspinal infection. The basic lesion in Pott's disease is a combination of osteomyelitis and arthritis, usually affecting more than one vertebra. The anterior aspect of the vertebral body adjacent to the subchondral plate is commonly involved. Spinal TB can include any of the following: progressive bone destruction leading to vertebral collapse and kyphosis, cold abscess formation (due to extension of infection into adjacent ligaments and soft tissues), spinal canal narrowing by abscesses, granulation tissue or direct dural invasionresulting in spinal …

Teriparatide And Its Bone Healing Power, Aneeta J. Joseph, Jesus L. Penabad, Antonio Pinero-Pilona

West Florida Division GME Research Day 2020

Teriparatide, a parathyroid hormone analog, is an important anabolic agent approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to increase bone mineral density in osteoporotic patients. Parathyroid hormone (PTH) regulates calcium, phosphate, and active vitamin-D metabolites. The amino terminal peptide fragments of PTH has been known to increase bone mass and are being used in clinical practice for osteoporosis management.3 Teriparatide increases bone density of lumbar spine and femoral neck, and decreases the risk of vertebral and non-vertebral fractures both in postmenopausal women and men. It is also known to prevent fractures in patients with osteoporosis and promote healing of …
