Mimicking Malignancy: A Case Of Non-Traumatic Myositis Ossificans In The Calf, Fatima Safi, Artur Amirkhanyan, Amnah Andrabi, Madeline Doucet

Objective: This case report highlights the diagnostic challenges of non-traumatic myositis ossificans (MO), a rare benign heterotopic ossifying lesion, and emphasizes its potential to mimic malignancy. Case Presentation: An 18-year-old female with no trauma history presented with a one-month history of progressive right calf pain, ankle weakness (4/5 strength), and difficulty ambulating. Initial ultrasound suggested a hematoma, but the persistence of symptoms prompted advanced imaging. CTA revealed arterial extravasation, while MRI identified a heterogeneously enhancing soleus muscle mass, raising suspicion for sarcoma. Background

With increasing numbers of human-animal interactions, there has been an increase in animal-related injuries. While canine bites are the most commonly reported animal injury, little data exists in regard to the other classes of animals, particularly marine life. The last comprehensive report on injuries related to noncanine bites and stings seen in emergency departments (EDs) across the US was between 2011 and 2015.

Methods

Introduction

A thrower’s fracture is a mid-to-distal third humerus fracture that commonly presents as an audible pop with severe arm pain sustained during the throwing motion. Although thrower’s fracture has been described previously in the literature, this report is the first to demonstrate compartment syndrome as its potential sequel.

Pyomyositis is a rare disease that is often misdiagnosed. Formerly more common in tropic areas, it has been more prevalent in temperate climates in the past couple of decades. Most cases of pyomyositis have a known cause or the patient is immunocompromised, but there are a few documented cases of spontaneous pyomyositis in an otherwise healthy patient. Our case describes a 35-year-old male with no past medical history or history of IV drug use who presented to the emergency department with right sided chest pain.
