Recognizing this urgency, India's Ministry of Health and Family Welfare introduced the 'SaQushal' toolkit, empowering health facilities to self-assess and improve their safety practices. This study presents an internal audit at a Rural Health Training Centre (RHTC) in Coimbatore, India, utilizing the 'SaQushal' framework. The facility achieved an overall score of 63%, exceeding the 50% minimum threshold for each domain, indicating commendable efforts towards establishing good quality standards. The discovery of malaria parasites by Laveran in 1880 as well as the finding of mosquitoes as vectors for avian malaria by Ross in 1897, made scientific studies about malaria possible. Skeletal dysplasia encompasses a spectrum of over 400 rare inheritable skeletal abnormalities typically manifested early in childhood. Hypertrophic Osteoarthropathy is a clinical syndrome marked by abnormal skin and osseous tissue proliferation at the distal extremities. It is characterized by unique clinical features such as digital clubbing, periostosis of tubular bones, and synovial effusions.

A male patient, 70 years of age, was evaluated for an infected thoracic endovascular aneurysm repair (TEVAR). After presenting with persistent fever, a positron emission tomography scan found an infected aortic stent graft. OBJECTIVES: Perioperative stroke is the most dreaded complication of carotid artery interventions and can severely affect patients' quality of life. This study evaluated the impact of this event on mortality for patients undergoing interventional treatment of carotid artery stenosis with three different modalities.

METHODS: Patients undergoing carotid revascularization at participating Memorial Hermann Health System facilities were captured from 2003-2022. These patients were treated with either carotid endarterectomy (CEA), transfemoral carotid stenting (TF-CAS), or transcarotid artery revascularization (TCAR). Perioperative outcomes, including stroke and mortality, as well as follow-up survival data at 6-month intervals, were analyzed and stratified per treatment modality.

OBJECTIVE: To identify risk factors associated with in-hospital seizures and new-onset epilepsy in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) who underwent coiling embolization or clipping surgery.

METHODS: This retrospective descriptive study included 195 patients diagnosed with aneurysmal SAH and treated with coiling embolization or clipping surgery between January 2018 and June 2022.

RESULTS: Among the 195 patients meeting inclusion criteria, 9 experienced an onset seizure at the time of SAH. In-hospital seizures were observed in 33 patients, of which 24 were electrographic seizures detected in 24 patients with suspected subclinical seizures. Aortic dissection often results in chronic aneurysmal degeneration due to progressive false lumen expansion. Thoracic endovascular aortic repair and other techniques of vessel incorporation such as fenestrated-branched or parallel grafts have been increasingly used to treat chronic postdissection aneurysms. True lumen compression or a vessel origin from the false lumen can present considerable technical challenges. In these cases, the limited true lumen space can result in inadequate stent graft expansion or restrict the ability to reposition the device or manipulate catheters. Patients with heart failure (HF) have a high prevalence of polypharmacy, which can lead to drug interactions, cognitive impairment, and medication non-compliance. However, the definition of polypharmacy in these patients is still inconsistent. The aim of this scoping review was to find the most common definition of polypharmacy in HF patients. We conducted a scoping review searching Medline, Embase, CINAHL, and Cochrane using terms including polypharmacy, HF and deprescribing, which resulted in 7,949 articles. Articles without a definition of polypharmacy in HF patients and articles which included patients < 18 years of age were excluded; only 59 articles were included. Of the 59 articles, 49% (n = 29) were retrospective, 20% (n = 12) were prospective, 10% (n = 6) were cross-sectional, and 27% (n = 16) were review articles. Twenty percent (n = 12) of the articles focused on HF with reduced ejection fraction, 10% (n = 6) focused on HF with preserved ejection fraction and 69% (n = 41) articles either focused on both diagnoses or did not clarify the specific type of HF. The most common cutoff for polypharmacy in HF was five medications (59%, n = 35). There was no consensus regarding the inclusion or exclusion of over-the-counter medications, supplements, or vitamins. Some newer studies used a cutoff of 10 medications (14%, n = 8), and this may be a more practical and meaningful definition for HF patients.

Obesity is in epidemic proportions in many parts of the world, contributing to increasing rates of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). NAFLD represents a range of conditions from the initial stage of fatty liver to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), which can progress to severe fibrosis, through to hepatocellular carcinoma. There currently exists no treatment for the long-term management of NAFLD/NASH, however, dietary interventions have been investigated for the treatment of NASH, including several polyphenolic compounds. Objective: Lymphoma is the sixth most common cancer in Australia and comprises 2.8% of worldwide cancer diagnoses. Research targeting development and evaluation of post-treatment care for debilitating complications resulting from the disease and its treatment is limited. This study aimed to assess the feasibility and acceptability of a nurse-led survivorship intervention, post-treatment in Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma survivors. Methods: A single-center, prospective, 3-arm, pilot, randomized controlled, parallel-group trial was used. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is associated with ischemic stroke. There is, however, a lack of knowledge on the exact cause-effect relationship, and preclinical models of OSA for experimental ischemic stroke investigations are not well characterized. In this review, we discuss sleep apnea and its relationship with stroke risk factors. We consider how OSA may lead to ischemic stroke and how OSA-induced metabolic syndrome and hypothalamic-pituitary axis (HPA) dysfunction could serve as therapeutic targets to prevent ischemic stroke. Retrorectal herniation of the sigmoid colon is a rare condition characterized by the protrusion of a segment of the colon into the pre-sacral space and posterior to the rectum. This herniation occurs through a defect in the peritoneum, which may have developed secondary to congenital mechanisms, surgery, trauma, or inflammatory processes. Here, a case of retrorectal herniation of the sigmoid colon in an elderly female patient presenting with constipation is reported, with a review of the literature.

Orthohantaviruses cause hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome; most cases occur in the southwest region of the United States. We discuss a clinical case of orthohantavirus infection in a 65-year-old woman in Michigan and the phylogeographic link of partial viral fragments from the patient and rodents captured near the presumed site of infection.

A congenital disseminated malignant rhabdoid tumor (MRT) is an exceedingly rare and aggressive pediatric cancer marked by the presence of malignant rhabdoid cells in various organs, including the brain, kidneys, and soft tissues, at birth. It is often detected prenatally or shortly post-birth. The malignancy's aggressiveness results in a bleak prognosis, offering limited treatment options and low survival rates. BACKGROUND: Affecting 2-4% of pregnancies, pre-eclampsia is a leading cause of maternal death and morbidity worldwide. Using routinely available data, we aimed to develop and validate a novel machine learning-based and clinical setting-responsive time-of-disease model to rule out and rule in adverse maternal outcomes in women presenting with pre-eclampsia.

To improve particle radiotherapy, we need a better understanding of the biology of radiation effects, particularly in heavy ion radiation therapy, where global responses are observed despite energy deposition in only a subset of cells. Here, we integrated a high-speed swept confocally-aligned planar excitation (SCAPE) microscope into a focused ion beam irradiation platform to allow real-time 3D structural and functional imaging of living biological samples during and after irradiation. We demonstrate dynamic imaging of the acute effects of irradiation on 3D cultures of U87 human glioblastoma cells, revealing characteristic changes in cellular movement and intracellular calcium signaling following ionizing irradiation.

Spontaneous subgaleal hematoma in pediatric patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) is a rare occurrence that can present with symptoms mimicking ischemic stroke, a known complication of SCD. However, unlike ischemic stroke, subgaleal hematoma is nonlethal and can be managed conservatively without major sequelae. Here, we present the case of an adolescent with SCD who presented with 2 episodes of subgaleal and epidural hematomas, 2 years apart. The latter episode occurred while on crizanlizumab, an anti-P-selectin antibody, approved for use in SCD in 2019 to reduce the number of acute pain crises. USU Extension Diabetes Cook Along classes provide diabetes education to the public while removing barriers to participation. These classes teach relevant topics through hands-on activities to increase participants’ ability to effectively self-manage their diabetes symptoms. Evaluation results show that participants experienced high satisfaction (86%) and substantial knowledge gain (92%) after the classes.

Introduction. Esophageal variceal bleeding is one of the complications caused by an increase in pressure within the portal vein blood vessels. The gold standard examination for portal pressure is the hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG), but HVPG examination is invasive, involving transjugular catheterization of the hepatic vein. Currently, non-invasive methods for measuring portal hypertension are being developed to predict esophageal varices and esophageal variceal bleeding using spleen stiffness measurements.
