Mosquitoes may develop resistance to insecticides used by control programs, potentially increasing population density and the risk of mosquito-borne diseases. Culex spp. mosquitos are the primary vector of West Nile Virus (WNV), the leading cause of mosquito-borne disease in the United States and a reportable disease in Tennessee. Resistance profiles were constructed for two insecticides, permethrin and malathion, in a Culex spp. population from Nashville, Tennessee. Adult female mosquitoes were live-captured using gravid traps and tested using the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) bioassay protocol to assess resistance or susceptibility. Background: Small for gestational age is a complex perinatal syndrome associated with increased neonatal morbidity, mortality, and impaired childhood growth and neurodevelopment. Current classifications rely primarily on birthweight, which does not capture the heterogeneity of the condition nor predict long-term health outcomes. Here we aim to identify and characterize distinct small for gestational age subgroups and assess their neonatal and early childhood health trajectories.
Objective: To refine the classification of small for gestational age by identifying subgroups based on maternal, fetal, and environmental factors and evaluating their associations with neonatal morbidity, growth, and neurodevelopment at age 2.

Background/Objectives: Breast cancer is a heterogeneous disease, and the role of the transcription factor SPDEF remains controversial. We aimed to clarify the prognostic value of SPDEF, explore demographic and molecular correlates of its expression, and investigate potential regulatory mechanisms underlying its dysregulation. Methods: Genomic and clinical data for 1218 breast cancer tumors were obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). SPDEF mRNA expression was compared across intrinsic subtypes, age, and race, and prognostic significance was evaluated by Kaplan–Meier analysis. BACKGROUND: Central nervous system involvement in multiple myeloma (CNS-MM) is considered a rare but devastating manifestation of extra-medullary disease (EMD) associated with aggressive biology and dismal outcomes. Treatment advances over the past few decades have improved survival in patients with MM, however, it has not translated into a similar survival benefit for those with CNS-MM. Early recognition and targeted management of CNS-MM remain major clinical challenges.

Purpose. Myeloma overexpressed gene (MYEOV) was initially identified as a gene amplified in several malignancies and was found to promote cell proliferation and metastasis. Our previous comparative RNA sequencing and epigenetic analyses revealed high MYEOV levels in differentiated corneal epithelial cells and showed that TET2 epigenetically regulated MYEOV expression. In the current study, we aimed to further characterize the expression and regulation of MYEOV in the human ocular surface. Methods. The ocular surface microbiome plays a crucial role in maintaining immune homeostasis, and its disruption may contribute to mucosal inflammation and autoimmunity. This pilot exploratory study investigated and compared the ocular surface bacterial microbiome in patients with Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), Sjögren's disease (SjD), and healthy controls using next-generation sequencing (NGS) and correlated these findings with dry eye parameters. Conjunctival swabs were collected from sixteen individuals: ten with SJS, three with SjD, and three healthy controls. Dry eye parameters were employed to evaluate the dry eye disease. Citrin deficiency (CD) is caused by the inactivation of SLC25A13, a mitochondrial membrane protein required to move electrons from cytosolic NADH to the mitochondrial matrix in hepatocytes. People with CD do not like sweets. Here we show that SLC25A13 loss causes the accumulation of glycerol-3-phosphate (G3P), which activates the carbohydrate response element-binding protein (ChREBP) to transcribe FGF21, which acts in the brain to restrain intake of sweets and alcohol and to transcribe key genes driving lipogenesis. Mouse and human data suggest that G3P-ChREBP is a mechanistic component of the Randle Cycle that contributes to metabolic-dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease and forms …

Advances in computer vision and machine learning have augmented the ability to analyze orthopedic radiographs. A critical but underexplored component of this process is the accurate classification of radiographic views and localization of relevant anatomical regions, both of which can impact the performance of downstream diagnostic models. This study presents a deep learning object detection model and mobile application designed to classify distal radius radiographs into standard views-anterior-posterior (AP), lateral (LAT), and oblique (OB)- while localizing the anatomical region most relevant to distal radius fractures.
