The purpose of this investigation was to examine creativity in dental hygiene students, dental hygiene educators, and dental hygiene practitioners.

Torrance's creativity test, What Kind of Person Are You?, was used to measure creativity in a convenience sample of 231 subjects. Data were organized according to ex post facto research design utilizing educational and occupational status as the non-manipulated independent ,, variables, and What Kind of Person Are You? creativity scores as the dependent variables. A study was conducted to determine the effects of two oral health in-service teaching methodologies on intact groups of staff members and patients at two extended health care facilities. Oral health in-service education conducted by a dental hygienist (IV₁ ); and oral health in-service education with direct guidance of the staff's oral health services to patients by the dental hygienist (IV₂ ) were implemented at the Medicenters of Virginia Beach and Norfolk, respectively.

Base line and post evaluation data on the oral health status of each patient group were collected utilizing the Simplified Oral Hygiene Index. Base line …

The purpose of this investigation was to examine the effectiveness of the phase contrast microscope when used as an adjunct to a patient education program in motivating individuals to improve oral hygiene habits. A convenience sample with randomized groups was utilized to select sixty-five subjects. Subjects attended five appointments: one appointment for oral prophylaxis, three appointments for oral hygiene instruction and a three month recall. A phase contrast microscope demonstration was the independent variable. Plaque scores were measured at each appointment using a Modification of the OHI-S. This investigation evaluated the gingival condition of areas with minimal (less than or equal to 1.0 millimeter) and appreciable (greater than or equal to 2.0 millimeters) widths of keratinized gingiva.

Sixteen dental, dental hygiene, and dental assisting students and dental faculty who had contralateral or unilateral areas of minimal and appreciable widths of keratinized gingiva on the mid-buccal surface of mandibular bicuspids were examined. Gingival exudate, plaque, gingival inflammation based on color change and/or swelling and bleeding on probing were evaluated. The results showed that all areas examined were plaque free. The research described in the present paper is based upon a parsimonious analysis of behavior which utilizes principles that have been empirically determined. These principles as discussed by Ullmann and Krasner (1966) and Ulrich, Stachnik, and Mabry (1966) have suggested the wide applicability of behavior modification techniques, not only with animals, but with human subjects in diverse settings. One setting that has previously been left unexplored by proponents of behavior modification, which promises to be an area of growing concern, is that of dental hygiene.

Modifications, Adaptations, And Clinical Observations On The Buccal Arch Positioner, Bill J. Miller

Buccal arch positioners (BAP) were constructed for four orthodontic patients banded with edgewise brackets, which were clinically observed during the finishing stages of treatment. At 2-4 week intervals data were collected on oral hygiene, tissue tolerance, magnitude and duration of soreness, and ease of appliance insertion and adjustments.

During the construction of the BAP, an ideal set up was found to be necessary for construction of the flexible components. It had the final location of each tooth visible so the investigator could work towards that goal.

Heat treatment of the rigid component was done to remove the cold working stress …
