Potential Applications Of Thymus Vulgaris In Dental Care: A Review Of Antimicrobial And Oral Health Benefits, Lakenzia Z. Ham Apr 2026

Potential Applications Of Thymus Vulgaris In Dental Care: A Review Of Antimicrobial And Oral Health Benefits, Lakenzia Z. Ham

Undergraduate Research Conference

This research proposal focuses on how common thyme (Thymus vulgaris) can be used in dental care. There has been more interest in natural products for dental health because some common dental treatments can have side effects or lead to antibiotic resistance. Thyme contains natural compounds like thymol and carvacrol that help kill bacteria, reduce inflammation, and prevent buildup on teeth.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the current scientific literature to see the effectiveness of thyme in preventing common oral health problems like cavities, gum disease, and bad breath. Research shows that thyme can fight bacteria …

Teaming Up For Better Health: An Interprofessional Collaborative Approach To Older Adult Oral Care, Deborah Dowd, Jodie Lopez, Jennifer Goodman May 2025

Teaming Up For Better Health: An Interprofessional Collaborative Approach To Older Adult Oral Care, Deborah Dowd, Jodie Lopez, Jennifer Goodman

Utah Conference on Community Engagement

Oral health is a critical component of overall health, significantly influencing systemic diseases and the quality of life in older adults. Conditions such as xerostomia, swallowing difficulties, and poor oral self-care are associated with aspiration pneumonia. Integrating oral health into healthcare in long-term care facilities (LTCFs) is essential for preventing various conditions and improving quality of life. Effective oral hygiene is crucial in avoiding non-ventilator hospital-associated pneumonia by reducing oral biofilm and lowering the risk of pneumonia. Nurses' knowledge and care in oral health across healthcare settings are vital for positive health outcomes. Revising nursing curricula to incorporate oral health …

Efficacy Of Biodegradable Natural Fibers Infused Toothbrushes In Plaque Control And Gingival Health: A Double Blind Randomized Control Clinical Trial, Shazneen Kandawalla Feb 2025

Efficacy Of Biodegradable Natural Fibers Infused Toothbrushes In Plaque Control And Gingival Health: A Double Blind Randomized Control Clinical Trial, Shazneen Kandawalla

Annual Research Symposium

Title: Efficacy of Biodegradable Natural fibers-Infused Toothbrushes in Plaque Control and Gingival Health: A Comparative Study

Background: Plaque removal is crucial for preventing gingivitis and periodontitis. Biodegradable toothbrushes, infused with natural substances like charcoal and neem, provide an eco-friendly alternative to conventional nylon brushes. Charcoal offers antibacterial properties, while neem provides antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory benefits.

Aim: To evaluate and compare the antiplaque and anti-inflammatory effects of charcoal-infused and neem-infused toothbrushes with conventional toothbrushes.

Methods: This double-blind randomized controlled trial included 33 systemically healthy individuals diagnosed with gingivitis. Baseline plaque scores were set to zero through professional scaling. Subjects were randomly …

Double-Blinded Randomized Control Trial Investigating The Efficacy Of Probiotic Mouth Rinse In Enhancing Oral Health, Sudeep C B Prof. Dr., Sunil P M Prof. Dr. Feb 2024

Double-Blinded Randomized Control Trial Investigating The Efficacy Of Probiotic Mouth Rinse In Enhancing Oral Health, Sudeep C B Prof. Dr., Sunil P M Prof. Dr.

Annual Research Symposium

The efficacy of probiotic mouth rinse in enhancing oral health was investigated through a double-blinded randomized controlled trial involving 45 children aged 12 to 15 over a two-week period. Comparing probiotic mouth rinse, chlorhexidine mouth rinse, and a control group, plaque and gingival accumulation were assessed using established indices. Results indicated both probiotic and chlorhexidine groups exhibited reduced plaque compared to the control, with the probiotic group showing superior reduction in gingival inflammation. These findings suggest the potential of probiotic mouth rinse in improving oral hygiene and overall oral health.

Relationship Between Periodontal Disease And Coronary Heart Disease: A Bibliometric Analysis, Xiaowen Bo, Wenpeng Song Feb 2024

Relationship Between Periodontal Disease And Coronary Heart Disease: A Bibliometric Analysis, Xiaowen Bo, Wenpeng Song

Annual Research Symposium

Periodontal disease (PD) and coronary heart disease (CHD) are both prevalent diseases worldwide and cause patients physical and mental suffering and a global burden. Recent studies have suggested a link between PD and CHD, but there is less research in this field from the perspective of bibliometrics. This study aimed to quantitatively analyze the literature on PD and CHD to summarize intellectual bases, research hotspots, and emerging trends and pave the way for future research.

Role Of Oral Microbiota In Cancer Development, Vanessa Gunderson Mar 2023

Role Of Oral Microbiota In Cancer Development, Vanessa Gunderson

UNO Student Research and Creative Activity Fair

More individuals die from oral cancer every year than from melanoma, cervical cancer, and ovarian cancer in the United States. Further, the 5-year survival rate for oral cancer has remained stagnant for over forty years, which is almost unseen across any other form of cancer. This fact exposes that there is a major need to push for research, prevention, and education on oral cancer. To investigate this, a literature review was performed that looked at eight research studies and data from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). This review revealed that without proper oral hygiene and care, one’s oral bacterial …
