Dental Hygiene Program Feasibility In Kailua Kona, Hawaii, William Li, Lindsay Gietzen
Dental Hygiene Program Feasibility In Kailua Kona, Hawaii, William Li, Lindsay Gietzen
Pacific Journal of Health
Establishing a dental hygiene program in Kailua Kona, Hawaii, could address critical gaps in local healthcare but requires careful consideration of its feasibility given the significant costs involved. This literature review assesses existing studies to understand the potential for success, focusing on effective recruitment and retention strategies that have been implemented in other rural and underserved regions. Findings reveal that communities worldwide face similar challenges in attracting healthcare providers to remote areas, with successful programs often integrating mandatory externships to encourage healthcare workers to experience and engage with underserved communities. Given Hawaii’s diverse ethnic makeup, insights from cross-cultural and global …
Dental Hygiene Programs’ Use Of Oral Health Literacy Techniques For Special Needs Patients And Caregivers, Socorro D. Tejeda Diaz
Dental Hygiene Programs’ Use Of Oral Health Literacy Techniques For Special Needs Patients And Caregivers, Socorro D. Tejeda Diaz
Dental Hygiene ETDs
This study examined oral health literacy communication techniques in dental hygiene programs across the U.S. for special needs patients and their caregivers. The study surveyed 46 U.S. dental hygiene program directors on communication techniques, degrees offered, and subject areas. Two-sample t-tests compared differences in communication techniques between AAS and BAS and subject areas. Most respondents routinely employed printed materials with 2 or 3 concepts, speak slowly, and simple language. When comparing the variances in communication techniques offered in AAS and BAS, we observed a t-statistic of 2.06 with a corresponding p-value of 0.54. This suggests that the mean communication techniques …
Transforming Care: Elevating Oral Hygiene Compliance To Combat Nosocomial Aspiration Pneumonia In Adult Oncology Patients, Karina Larrea
Transforming Care: Elevating Oral Hygiene Compliance To Combat Nosocomial Aspiration Pneumonia In Adult Oncology Patients, Karina Larrea
Master's Projects and Capstones
Objective Aspiration pneumonia is a preventable, yet common complication in oncology patients undergoing chemotherapy, steered by suboptimal compliance with oral hygiene protocols and elevated susceptibility due to mucosal barrier injuries. Despite its major impact on healthcare costs and morbidity, compliance with evidence-based practices remains inadequate. Aim This project aimed to decrease nosocomial aspiration pneumonia rates from 1.5% to 1.3% by enhancing oral hygiene compliance from 41% to 70% over a 12-week period. Methods Proposed interventions included implementing paired oral hygiene order sets into electronic medical records, once-per-shift cues, staggered patient education sessions, and staff education on standardized protocols. Pre-intervention data …

Take Charge of Your Health: Start with Your Smile
Oral health is a fundamental component of overall health, yet it is often neglected-particularly among vulnerable populations like houseless individuals (Freitas et al., 2019). Houseless individuals face numerous barriers to accessing healthcare, with dental services being limited. This lack of access contributes to a higher prevalence of oral diseases, which if left untreated, can lead to severe complications. Poor oral health doesn’t just affect the mouth; it negatively impacts one’s overall systemic health, psychosocial well-being, and quality of life (Csikar et al., 2019).
As nursing students engaged in a Community Health …

Histomorphometric Assessment Of Vibrational Forces On The Extended Midpalatal Suture, Aylin Pasaoglu Bozkurt, Özge Özdal Zincir, Asli Emincik
Journal of Dentistry Indonesia
Objective: This study determined the effects of vibrational forces on bone formation in the retention period of an expanded mid-palatal, histomorphometric suture in a rat model. Methods: Twenty-four 7–8- to 8-week-old male Wistar rats weighing 190.25 ± 15.35 g were separated into groups: only expansion (G1), expansion and 30 Hz vibration application (G2), and expansion and 111 Hz vibration application (G3). After 5 days of expansion, there were 12 days of retention. All animals were sacrificed, and their premaxilla were dissected. A histological examination evaluated the number of osteoblasts, osteoclasts, and capillaries, the amount of mineralized area, and …

Journal of Dentistry Indonesia
Appropriate management of anterior tooth fracture restores the function and aesthetics and provides a positive psychological impact for the patient. One of the most conservative approaches for such a restoration is reattachment; if a fracture fragment remains attached to the tooth and is available, as in young patients, immediate reporting helps preserve the vitality and long-term defense mechanism. Objective: This case report provides two cases with varied approaches for the management of complicated and uncomplicated crown fractures using reattachment procedures. Case report: During the clinical examination, the first case described the management of an uncomplicated fracture using the …

Assessing Dental Hygiene Students’ Perspectives: A Survey Of Curriculum Adequacy For Interdisciplinary Settings In U.S. Dental Hygiene Programs, Brittany Elaine Tripp
Dental Hygiene ETDs
This study investigated whether dental hygiene programs implement interdisciplinary care into their curriculum and assessed student preparedness for working in interdisciplinary settings. The study also aimed to identify student preferences for various interdisciplinary care settings. A survey was developed and distributed via email to program directors of accredited dental hygiene programs across the United States. Those programs directors were asked to forward the survey to currently enrolled final-year students. Out of eighty-two responses received, 16 were excluded because those respondents were not final-year dental hygiene students. Sixty-six participants were considered eligible for the survey (n=66). The results indicate that most …

Ergonomics And Musculoskeletal Disorders: An Evaluation Of Self-Assessment Using Surveys, Shannon L. Sherman
Dental Hygiene ETDs
Musculoskeletal disorders, MSDs, are a serious issue many dental professionals experience. It is understood that improper ergonomics are a contributing factor to developing MSDs. Several factors can be implemented into a dental hygienist’s everyday routine to help decrease the risk of developing musculoskeletal disorders. The purpose of this study was to investigate how many practicing dental hygienists experience musculoskeletal pain from daily hygiene practice and how ergonomics contributes to their level of pain. The study also discovered through self-assessment, areas participating dental hygienists would be willing to improve on in their daily ergonomic practice to potentially help decrease or prevent …
