Typically, a comprehensive orthodontic treatment requires two to three years of active tooth movement, which may not seem desirable for adults. Orthodontic appliances can impede proper oral hygiene and increase the risk of white spot lesions and caries. Background: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are attractive cell sources for tissue engineering application because of their ability to proliferate and differentiate into mesenchymal tissues. MSCs derived from human gingiva are readily accessible and highly proliferative with the ability to differentiate into an osteogenic lineage, making them ideal sources for tissue regeneration of craniofacial defects. While dexamethasone is a traditional inducer of osteogenic differentiation, studies have shown that its prolonged presence in culture medium may have toxic effects on osteoblasts. School Hours Lost Due To Acute/Unplanned Dental Care, Shillpa Naavaal, Uma Kelekar

Dental Public Health and Policy Publications

Objective: We estimated the school-hours lost for acute/unplanned dental care and examined the associated factors among children aged 5-17 years using 2008 National Health Interview Survey data.

Methods: We used bivariate and multivariate regression models to investigate the associations between school hours lost and socioeconomic and oral health factors (p < .05).

Results: Acute/unplanned dental care accounted for a loss of 34 million school-hours annually. Compared to children with very good oral health, children with fair/poor oral health were 2.8 times more likely to lose ≥1 hours. Children in high-income families had 31% less likelihood of losing any school …

Objective: The aim of this study demonstrates an improved method for determining the exact molar positions on the lateral headfilm. Previously this position was located by visual inspection of the headfilm. We are testing the precision of visual determination compared to using occlusogram measurements. Materials and Methods: In a sample of 34 subjects treated for Class II malocclusion, we examined the pre and post treatment headfilms and compared molar positions determined by visualization with occlusogram measurements. A 13-year-old female patient presented with a chief complaint of anterior crossbite and chin prognathism. She had a skeletal Class III relationship with a brachyfacial vertical pattern. Anterior crossbite exhibited maximum intercuspation–centric relation shift, leading to an edge to-edge incisal position. On the basis of this patient’s chronological age, it was too late to perform conventional early treatment of Class III cases, which includes rapid palatal expansion combined with facemask or chincap therapy. Impaction in maxillary central incisor is not as common in comparison with maxillary canine, whereas it causes more occlusal and esthetic impact due to its visible location. This case reported a combined surgical and orthodontic treatment on two horizontally impacted maxillary central incisors with dilacerated roots. The treatment included 2 stages. In the first stage, the dental space was regained and surgical exposure with closed eruption technique was applied. In the second stage, excisional gingivectomy combined with orthodontic traction were used to reposition both teeth into alignment. The purpose of this research is to assess dental forensic knowledge and dental forensic radiographic skills of dental students. Methods. The purpose of this study was to determine the concordance of self-reported responses to oral health questions versus clinically evaluated recommended need for oral healthcare by calibrated dentists to determine usefulness of the questions for epidemiological studies. We additionally examined other factors associated with concordant self-reports versus clinical evaluations. Materials and Methods. We used a cross-sectional study design with 4,205 participants, ages 30 years and above, who had complete oral health self-perception data and dental referral data in the NHANES 2013-14. While Streptococcus sanguinis plays a beneficial role in the oral cavity as a competitor of Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus, the bacteria that produce dental caries, it can cause deadly infective endocarditis if given the opportunity to colonize the vegetations that form over damaged endocardial tissue. Pre-existing heart conditions, surgery, and intravenous drug use predispose individuals to endocarditis. S. sanguinis growth and consequential virulence is significantly impeded by restriction to manganese. This is due to the resulting overwhelming oxidative stress and formation of reactive oxygen species which damage DNA and other cellular components. Manganese is essential for S. sanguinis proteins …
