A Comparative Study Of Two Contemporary Methods Of Cephalometric Analysis, Alden B. Chase May 1963

A Comparative Study Of Two Contemporary Methods Of Cephalometric Analysis, Alden B. Chase

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

A comparative cephalometric study was made of nineteen cases, fourteen of which were patients under treatment at the Department of Orthodontics, School of Dentistry, Loma Linda University. The remainder were individuals considered to have normal occlusions.

The review of the literature emphasized the plethora of analyses and the fact that cephalometry is a tool that must be mastered if the orthodontist is to give the best service. Thus the need for a study to compare the methods of analyzing the cephalograph. A study was made to compare two main methods of analysis and to determine whether or not the information …

Effect Of 9 Α-Fluorohydrocortisone Acetate On Gastric And Salivary Electrolytes Of Normal Fasting Subjects, Ardis Stern Beckner Sep 1962

Effect Of 9 Α-Fluorohydrocortisone Acetate On Gastric And Salivary Electrolytes Of Normal Fasting Subjects, Ardis Stern Beckner

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

The effect of 9α-FF on the Na:K ratio, chloride, and pH of saliva and gastric secretions, and on the total and free acid of gastric juice in normal human subjects was investigated. This study was designed to investigate whether conditions could be produced in the normal human subject similar to those present in patients with primary aldosteronism by using large doses of 9α-FF. August and others found a change in salivary electrolytes when cortisone, desoxycortisone, or ACTH were given to normal subjects. In these cases as in primary aldosteronism there was a decreased Na:K ratio and potassium excretion, with sodium …

Effects Of Alternate Hot-And-Cold Treatment Following Hysterectomy, Teresa Eileen Holland

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

This study was conducted to find out if the giving of alternate hot-and-cold treatments to the chest following abdominal hysterectomy would result in measurable benefits in improved patient comfort and rate of recovery. The White Memorial Hospital was selected as the control area and the Loma Linda Sanitarium and Hospital was selected as the experimental area.

Literature was reviewed to determine the value of wet heat and cold on the circulatory and respiratory system and whether or not their effects would be useful postoperatively.

Accuracy Of The Indirect Method Evaluated By Mercury Micromeasurement, Estol C. Pruett Jun 1961

Accuracy Of The Indirect Method Evaluated By Mercury Micromeasurement, Estol C. Pruett

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Although the indirect method for preparing dental castings has been in use for over forty-five years, very little information has appeared in dental literature relative to its accuracy. The development of a precise and quantitative method for determining the adaptation of wax patterns or castings was necessary before such an evaluation could be considered valid. It was felt the Mercury Micromeasurement test, devised in 1958 by Hollenback, should meet these requirements. A description of the test had been published. However, at the time the project was begun, no data had appeared in the literature.

In order to establish a standard …

A Study Of The Bacteriological Effectiveness Of Oral Thermometer Procedures In Three Selected Hospitals, Esther Mae Rose May 1961

A Study Of The Bacteriological Effectiveness Of Oral Thermometer Procedures In Three Selected Hospitals, Esther Mae Rose

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Because pathogens such as streptococcus and staphylococcus have been transferred in many hospitals, the source of the infections is of concern to doctors, nurses, and other medical personnel. As shown by the review of literature, good techniques are necessary to stop the spread of disease.

It was the purpose of this study to investigate one facet of patient safety by: (1) the culture of thermometers ready for use in three selected hospitals; (2) to determine the effectiveness of the Group, Individual, and Central Supply methods of disinfection currently practiced in the three selected hospitals.

The method for the experiment of …

Electroencephalography In A Teaching Hospital, Guy M. Hunt Jr. Sep 1958

Electroencephalography In A Teaching Hospital, Guy M. Hunt Jr.

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Electroencephalography may be defined as a study of the electrical activity of the brain. This activity was first recorded and reported by Caton in 1875. However, it was the work of Hans Berger, confirmed by Adrian and Matthews in 1935, which opened the way for the rapid advancement of knowledge in this field. The arrival of the age of electronics made possible development of the sensitive, accurate, and dependable amplifiers available in modern electroencephalography, which has in turn made possible the rapid advancements in this field. Techniques have been perfected and standardized, personnel have been trained, and laboratories have been …

Surgery For Benign Biliary Tract Disease : An Analysis Of 310 Cases From Smaller Hospitals, Theodore E. Wade Jan 1956

Surgery For Benign Biliary Tract Disease : An Analysis Of 310 Cases From Smaller Hospitals, Theodore E. Wade

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

[Abstract Not Included]

Summary:

The results of biliary tract surgery in three small general hospitals serving suburban communities was studied. Their average daily censuses were 38, 70, and 97. Fourteen (4.5%) of 310 cases of benign biliary tract disease died after surgery. Among 219 cases of elective cholecystectomy, four patients (l.8%) died. The mortality in 1196 cases reported from small hospitals by this, and three other authors, was 3.3%. This is slightly higher than the mean mortality, 2.4% among 25 reports of surgical mortality for gall stone disease found in the literature. The maximum number of cases came to surgery …
