Detecting A Loss Of Situational Awareness, Stephen R. Pickard, Ami Eidels, Eric J. Beh, Leslie M. Blaha May 2021

Detecting A Loss Of Situational Awareness, Stephen R. Pickard, Ami Eidels, Eric J. Beh, Leslie M. Blaha

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2021

Based within the aviation context, this research is attempting to detect a loss of situational awareness (SA) using Detection Response Tasks (DRT). The research is in two phases: an initial survey and then an experimentation phase. A survey has been distributed attempting to gain an understanding of what current aviation personnel understand of the construct of SA and how it is currently taught and assessed, and what are the observed indicators of a loss of SA. The survey results will be used to validate some previously identified elements of SA around the link between SA and cognitive capacity and workload, …

Dimensions Of Pilot Experience And Their Contributing Variables, Nsikak E. Udo-Imeh, Steven J. Landry May 2021

Dimensions Of Pilot Experience And Their Contributing Variables, Nsikak E. Udo-Imeh, Steven J. Landry

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2021

Pilot experience is generally recognized as an insulating factor against erroneous weather-related decision making in General Aviation (GA). A pilot’s level of experience is traditionally taken to correspond to the total flight hours accrued. However, there is some evidence from aviation accident databases and research that total flight hours on its own, may be an inadequate measure of pilot experience. Indeed, pilot experience may be viewed as a multidimensional attribute, with each dimension made up of several elements or variables. How individual elements align with different dimensions, or the extent to which each dimension or the elements thereof contribute to …

An Examination Of The Impact Of Health Literacy Assessment On Incarcerated Individuals With A Diagnosis Of Type 2 Diabetes, Josi Rotunno May 2021

An Examination Of The Impact Of Health Literacy Assessment On Incarcerated Individuals With A Diagnosis Of Type 2 Diabetes, Josi Rotunno

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Low health literacy levels limit healthcare outcomes in a variety of diagnoses. Having a low health literacy level can significantly impact an individual’s ability to manage their condition. Among these individuals are incarcerated individuals, who are especially vulnerable to low health literacy levels. Due to regulations of the correctional facility, along with the vulnerability of the population, it is often difficult to get approval for studies and to make changes within this setting[TMD1] . The stigma of incarceration, along with the difficulty in navigating the correctional setting regulations, often create barriers to making changes that could improve the health …

Nitroglycerin Safety In Inferior St Elevation Myocardial Infarction (Stemi) Patients: A Retrospective Review, Olivia Montgomery May 2021

Nitroglycerin Safety In Inferior St Elevation Myocardial Infarction (Stemi) Patients: A Retrospective Review, Olivia Montgomery

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Nitroglycerin (NTG) is medication used to reduce chest pain (Boden et al., 2015) and is the suggested analgesic for angina associated with ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) (de Alencar Neto, 2018). Due to the potential for right ventricular (RV) infarct and hemodynamic collapse in inferior STEMI patients (Nagam, Vinson, & Levis, 2017), the American Heart Association (AHA) recommends avoidance of NTG in patients with suspected RV infarct (Antman et al., 2004). The purpose of this DNP project was to explore the safety of NTG use in the treatment of patients diagnosed with STEMI by evaluating the effects of NTG on …

A Randomized Open-Label Study Of Two Methods Of Proton Pump Inhibitors Discontinuation, Emily Hendricks, Aman Ajmeri, Monider M. Singh, Milliejoan Mongalo, Lynne J. Goebel

Internal Medicine

Background: Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are effective in treating gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Unfortunately, they are often inappropriately prescribed and long-term use has potential adverse effects. A single best method for discontinuation of PPIs does not currently exist. The objective of this study was to determine if there is a significant difference in successfully discontinuing PPI use at 12 months between patients discontinuing abruptly or tapering first.

Methodology: We conducted a randomized trial with 38 patients diagnosed with GERD. We collected six weekly and then monthly surveys of symptoms based on the Dyspepsia Symptom Severity Index. Chart review at 12 …

Neonatal Gut Microbiota Alterations And Local Inflammation Induced By Escherichia Coli Infection Are Modified By Lactobacillus Rhamnosus Prophylaxis, Susana Chavez-Bueno, Hao Xuan, Shahid Umar, Concong Zhong, Wei Yu, Venkatesh Sampath

Presentations

Background: E. coli is a leading cause of neonatal sepsis. Newborns ingest E. coli, which transcytoses the gut producing bacteremia. Lactobacillus spp. decrease E. coli gut transcytosis but the mechanisms involved in this protective effect are not well understood.

Objective: To determine the effects of Lactobacillus pretreatment on the intestinal microbiota and inflammation in neonatal rats orally infected with E. coli.

Design/Methods: Newborn rats were orally pretreated on day of life (DOL) 1 and 2 with four doses of 107 colony forming units (CFU) of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) or PBS. On DOL 2, pups received orally 106 CFU of …

Improving Rural Emergency Nurses Comfort During Palliative And End-Of-Life Communication, Abbie A. Styes, Mary J. Isaacson May 2021

Improving Rural Emergency Nurses Comfort During Palliative And End-Of-Life Communication, Abbie A. Styes, Mary J. Isaacson

College of Nursing Faculty Publications

Background: Emergency nurses (ENs) often care for patients nearing the end of their lives or with life-limiting illnesses. However, ENs are hesitant to initiate palliative or end-of-life (PEOL) discussions because of a lack of comfort with these topics. Many ENs have no formal PEOL communication training which contributes to the lack of comfort with PEOL discussions in the emergency department (ED). Thus, the purpose of this quality improvement project was to determine how PEOL communication training affected rural ENs perceived comfort level during PEOL conversations.
Sample/Setting: A convenience sample of 14 registered nurses working in a rural Northern Plains ED. …
