Biology Faculty Scholarship

Ethanol-induced transcriptional changes underlie important physiological responses to ethanol that are likely to contribute to the addictive properties of the drug. We examined the transcriptional responses of Caenorhabditis elegans across a timecourse of ethanol exposure, between 30 min and 8 h, to determine what genes and genetic pathways are regulated in response to ethanol in this model. We found that short exposures to ethanol (up to 2 h) induced expression of metabolic enzymes involved in metabolizing ethanol and retinol, while longer exposure (8 h) had much more profound effects on the transcriptome. Several genes that are known to be involved …

Influenza Vaccine Uptake In Caregivers And Non-Caregivers: Implications For Policy And Practice, Nicholas Mercado May 2021

Influenza Vaccine Uptake In Caregivers And Non-Caregivers: Implications For Policy And Practice, Nicholas Mercado

NYMC Student Theses and Dissertations

Background: Caregivers are a critical and highly utilized healthcare resource. Previous research suggests that caregivers experience adverse physical and mental health outcomes and practice less self-care while serving their role. Influenza, or the flu, is a common and infectious disease caused by a virus that is responsible for millions of doctor visits, hospitalizations, and approximately 43,000 deaths annually. The most effective measure for addressing the flu is primary prevention, which includes a seasonal flu vaccine. Methods: Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data from 2016-2018 were analyzed. The study population included 154,170 respondents from 27 states and the District of …

PURPOSE: Few studies have assessed the presentation, management, and outcomes of sepsis in low-income countries (LICs). We sought to characterize these aspects of sepsis and to assess mortality predictors in sepsis in two referral hospitals in Rwanda.

MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study in two public academic referral hospitals in Rwanda. Data was abstracted from paper medical records of adult patients who met our criteria for sepsis.

RESULTS: Of the 181 subjects who met eligibility criteria, 111 (61.3%) met our criteria for sepsis without shock and 70 (38.7%) met our criteria for septic shock. Thirty-five subjects (19.3%) …

Identifying The Cost Of Preventable Chronic Disease In Prison: Can Illness Prevention Of Adults In Custody Save Money?, Molly Bineham May 2021

Identifying The Cost Of Preventable Chronic Disease In Prison: Can Illness Prevention Of Adults In Custody Save Money?, Molly Bineham

Dissertations and Theses

This study investigates the cost of preventable health problems and ailments when compared to other costs of incarceration. The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of imprisonment on the costliest chronic illness. The health of adults in custody related to the general population and the overall fiscal cost of the deadliest chronic illness among incarcerated adults is discussed. Linear regression is used to analyze the occurrence of heart disease and diabetes among adults in custody while controlling for other factors. The results of this analysis provide insight that chronic diseases like heart disease and diabetes should be …

The Impact Of Educational Resources And Perceived Preparedness On Medical Education Performance, Justin Bauzon, Amalie Alver, Vishvaas Ravikumar, Adrian Devera, Tatiana Mikhael, Rafae Nauman, Edward Simanton

School of Medicine Faculty Research

Introduction: Undergraduate medical education has evolved necessarily with the increasing utilization of technology and the availability of ancillary resources developed for medical students. However, medical educational resources are expensive and there have been few studies validating these resources for their ability to significantly modify student exam performance. Methods: A post-exam survey was devised to evaluate medical students for resource usage, student-perceived preparedness, and exam performance. Results: Students who felt more prepared for exams performed better than students who felt less prepared (p =.017). Students who watched didactic lectures online and those who utilized peer-to-peer tutoring outperformed students who did not …

The purpose of this randomized controlled trial (n = 268) at a Federally Qualified Health Center was to evaluate the outcomes of a care management intervention versus an attention control telephone intervention on changes in patient activation, depressive symptoms and self-rated health among a population of high-need, medically complex adults. Both groups had similar, statistically significant improvements in patient activation and self-rated health. Both groups had significant reductions in depressive symptoms over time; however, the group who received the care management intervention had greater reductions in depressive symptoms. Participants in both study groups who had more depressive symptoms had lower …

The Disproportionate Impact Of Covid-19 On Women, Ava Stallone May 2021

The Disproportionate Impact Of Covid-19 On Women, Ava Stallone

Honors Scholar Theses

The impact of COVID-19 is placing a large strain on women. This can be seen through reports of mental health and financial concerns. Women are more vulnerable to COVID-19 related economic effects due to existing gender inequalities, which in turn may also have a negative effect on mental health. Through this study gender disproportion is looked at between mental health and COVID-19 financial concerns among women and men. The aim is to asses how COVID-19 financial concerns may be contributing to stress, anxiety, and depression. It is hypothesized that; women will report worse mental health and greater economic concerns than …

Emerging Issues In Covid-19 Vaccination In Tropical Areas: Impact Of The Immune Response Against Helminths In Endemic Areas, Leonor Chacin-Bonilla, Nathalie Chacon, Alfonso J. Rodriguez-Morales

School of Medicine Publications

The Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has affected over 165 million people and caused the death of 3.4 million worldwide (up to May 20, 2021) (https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/map.html), becoming a serious problem of global public health and the worst epidemic in the last century, after the pandemic 1918 influenza. Researchers worldwide are trying to find valuable drugs against the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Some of them focused as antivirals, others targeted in other ways (e.g. immunomodulation) to relieve the symptoms of the infected patients and help lower the death toll throughout the world. Unfortunately, there is a lack of …
