Serum Micronutrient Status, Sleep Quality And Neurobehavioral Function Among Early Adolescents, Xiaopeng Ji, Charlene W. Compher, Sharon Y. Irving, Jinyoung Kim, David F. Dinges, Jianghong Liu
Nursing Faculty Research
Objective: To examine associations between serum micronutrients and neurobehavioral function and the mediating role of sleep quality in early adolescents. Design: In this cross-sectional study, peripheral blood samples were analyzed for iron and zinc levels. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Penn Computerized Neurocognitive Battery were used to assess sleep quality and neurobehavioral function, respectively. The generalized linear regressions (bootstrap) were performed to estimate the associations. Setting: Jintan, China Participants: 226 adolescents (106 females) from the Jintan Child Cohort study. Results: Adolescents with low iron (< 75 ug/dl) (OR=1.29, p=0.04) and low zinc (< 70 ug/dl) (OR=1.58, p0.05). Conclusion: Iron and zinc deficiencies may possibly be associated with poor sleep and neurobehavioral function among early adolescents. Poor sleep may partially mediate the relationship between micronutrients and neurobehavioral function.

Growth of the information economy and globalization of labor markets will be marked by exponential growth in emerging technologies that will cause considerable disruption of the social and economic sectors that drive the global job market. These disruptions will alter the way we work, where we work, and will be further affected by the changing demographic characteristics and level of training of the available workforce. These changes will likely result in scenarios where existing workplace hazards are exacerbated and new hazards with unknown health effects are created. The pace of these changes heralds an urgent need for a proactive approach …

The Epidemiology, Evaluation, And Assessment Of Lateral Ankle Sprains In Athletes, G. Javier Cavazos Jr., Lawrence B. Harkless
School of Medicine Publications
Approximately 30,000 ankle injuries occur every day in the United States. With the incidence estimated at more than 3 million a year and at a rate of 2.15/1,000 in the U.S. alone, medical specialists and other healthcare providers caring for the foot and ankle must take notice. Despite the millions of ankle injuries sustained annually, the true incidence may be underestimated, as fewer than half of individuals with ankle sprains seek medical attention from healthcare professionals. The economic burden associated with the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment is close to $4 billion annually. Ankle sprains account for half of all sports …

Development Of Improved Diagnostic Tests For Lyme Disease, Ezdehar Ghazal
Development Of Improved Diagnostic Tests For Lyme Disease, Ezdehar Ghazal
NYMC Student Theses and Dissertations
Laboratory diagnosis is very critical for early treatment of Lyme disease, as Lyme disease could be difficult to diagnose because of vague symptoms or the confusion with symptoms from other illnesses. Previously, the standard two tiered-testing (STTT) was the traditional testing for Lyme disease with two different lab testing methods, Enzyme Immunoassay (EIA) as the first-tier test and immunoblot as the second-tier test to confirm the diagnosis. However, western immunoblotting had a poor sensitivity of <50% for early Lyme disease and high costs. Recently, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended the use of a modified two tiered-testing (MTTT) which was cleared by The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in which EIA can be used instead of western immunoblotting.
In this study we followed a recent multiplexed paper-based immunoassay study for early Lyme disease serodiagnostic testing by using an Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) …

The antibiogram is an essential resource for institutions to track changes in antimicrobial resistance and to guide empirical antimicrobial therapy. In this Viewpoint, data and examples from literature are presented that suggest institutions have not completely adopted the standardized approach in developing antibiograms, as variations in the development methodologies of antibiograms exist despite consensus guidelines (M39) published by CLSI. We emphasize developing antibiograms in line with the M39 recommendations will help ensure that they are accurate, reliable and valid, and highlight that understanding the limitations of antibiogram data is critical to ensuring appropriate interpretation and application to clinical decision-making. We …

HER2-positive (HER2+) breast cancers (BrCs) contain approximately equal numbers of ERα+HER2+ and ERα−HER2+ cases. An enduring obstacle is the unclear cell lineage-related characteristics of these BrCs. Although ERα+HER2+ BrCs could lose ERα to become ERα−HER2+ BrCs, direct evidence is missing. To investigate ERα dependencies and their implications during BrC growth and metastasis, we generated ERαCreRFP-T mice that produce an RFP-marked ERα+ mammary gland epithelial cell (MGEC) lineage. RCAS virus-mediated expression of Erbb2, a rodent Her2 homolog, first produced comparable numbers of ERα+RFP+Erbb2+ and ERα−RFP−Erbb2+ MGECs. Early hyperplasia developed mostly from ERα+RFP+Erbb2+ cells and ERα−RFP−Erbb2+ cells in these lesions were rare. …
