Code Gray Response Team, Charlie A. Brizzee

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

This video presentation addresses the declining feeling of safety by frontline clinical staff due to the recent escalation of combative patients and workplace violence in the healthcare setting, identified through Emotional intelligence and the approach created to address it. This project was crafted as an innovative and creative approach to addressing the issue in the clinical setting without adding additional staff or additional expense to the organization. Additionally, the approach had to be innovative and creative as the author does not own the current process, and knowing to receive stakeholder acceptance, the ownership had to remain with the current stakeholder. …

Consumer Driven Health Plans (CDHPs) have been identified as a high-deductible insurance option that has increased consumer responsibility while healthcare expenditures have decreased. There has been an increasing need of these plans because they can help to control healthcare costs, and the increasing healthcare utilization. As the use of these plans have expanded, educated consumers have become more engaged in their healthcare services and have increased demands for transparency of healthcare costs. The methodology for this study was a literature review using 36 sources. The purpose of this study was to determine if CDHPs have created financial savings by increasing …

Addiction Generation: Stimulant Abuse In College Students, Jemma Kenobbie

Student Projects

Illicit use of prescription stimulants has come to the attention of clinicians, school administration, and the judicial system in recent years. Illicit stimulant use is defined as the use of prescription stimulants without a legitimate prescription or using stimulants inconsistent with the prescribed treatment plan, including diversion and inappropriate administration methods. These prescriptions have been known to cause serious side effects when taken incorrectly, yet their popularity as “study buddies” among college students has risen. The most current research has found that the percentage of undergraduate students abusing stimulants ranges from 8-43%, with an average of 17% of students abusing …

Humanitarian Athletic Participation And Identity Work, Amanda Terrell, Benajmin Houltberg, Sarah Brown, Rachel Falco, Sarah Schnitker

General Human Environmental Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Numerous studies examine youth purpose and volunteerism, but only few investigate how altruistic activities shape identity development within athletic contexts. Endurance-based humanitarian fundraising teams are becoming increasingly popular forms of volunteerism among adolescents and young adults in the United States, but little is known about their developmental role. Twenty-four participants (15–21 years of age; M = 17.42) were interviewed to identify the prominent themes that arose from their experiences while training for and participating in a marathon. A thematic analysis was used to determine the dominant themes that characterized the intersection of humanitarian marathon training and running with aspects of …

Safety Of Glucagon Use During Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography: A Retrospective Multicentric Study, Abhilash Perisetti Md, Hermant Goyal Md, Syed Mahanazuddin Phd, Rupinder Mann Md, Saurabh Chandan Md, Benjamin Tharian Md, Neil Sharma Md

Other Specialties

Introduction- Injectable glucagon inhibits gastrointestinal (GI) and duodenal motility by relaxing smooth muscles, decreasing the frequency and amplitude of phasic activity of the sphincter of Oddi. This enables endoscopists to enhance biliary cannulation and extract small bile duct stone. Additionally, glucagon can potentially worsen underlying hyperglycemia and hyperkalemia especially in patients with diabetes. It is unclear if glucagon impacts the adverse events of Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) such as rates of GI bleeding, GI perforation, post-ERCP pancreatitis (PEP) and in patient hospitalizations.

Methods We used TriNetX, a federated cloud-based network comprising of 92 healthcare organizations (HCOs) across the US. All …

Successful segmentation of the total intracranial vault (ICV) and ventricles is of critical importance when studying neurodegeneration through neuroimaging. We present iCVMapper and VentMapper, robust algorithms that use a convolutional neural network (CNN) to segment the ICV and ventricles from both single and multi-contrast MRI data. Our models were trained on a large dataset from two multi-site studies (N = 528 subjects for ICV, N = 501 for ventricular segmentation) consisting of older adults with varying degrees of cerebrovascular lesions and atrophy, which pose significant challenges for most segmentation approaches. The models were tested on 238 participants, including subjects with …

Pitch Discrimination Is Better For Synthetic Timbre Than Natural Musical Instrument Timbres, Despite Familiarity, Emma Holmes, Elizabeth Kinghorn, Lucy Mcgarry, Elizabeth Busari, Timothy D. Griffiths, Ingrid Johnsrude

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

Pitch discrimination is better for complex tones than for pure tones, but how more subtle differences in timbre affect pitch discrimination is not fully understood. This study compared pitch discrimination thresholds of flat-spectrum harmonic complex tones with those of natural sounds played by musical instruments of three different timbres (violin, trumpet, and flute). To investigate whether natural familiarity with sounds of particular timbres affects pitch discrimination thresholds, this study recruited musicians who were trained on one of the three instruments. We found that flautists and trumpeters could discriminate smaller differences in pitch for artificial flat-spectrum tones, despite their unfamiliar timbre, …

Feminine Hygiene Kits For Girls/Women Worldwide, Deseret Lauree Lazarte Oct 2021

Feminine Hygiene Kits For Girls/Women Worldwide, Deseret Lauree Lazarte

IPS/BAS 495 Undergraduate Capstone Projects

Through research and personal experience I found that there is a disparity for girls and women throughout the world when it comes to a natural occurrence for females, called menstruation. For the sake of brevity, I will use the general term “girls” though I mean to include women, also. In many countries girls don’t understand this monthly feminine process and don’t have the proper equipment to use. In many countries girls are taught wives’ tales on why women menstruate. Because of this they perpetuate the falsehoods to their girls and this leads to insecurities and shame. They also do not …

Co-Contraction Of Ankle Muscle Activity During Quiet Standing In Individuals With Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury Is Associated With Postural Instability, Kai Lon Fok, Jae W Lee, Janelle Unger, Katherine Chan, Kristin E Musselman, Kei Masani Oct 2021

Co-Contraction Of Ankle Muscle Activity During Quiet Standing In Individuals With Incomplete Spinal Cord Injury Is Associated With Postural Instability, Kai Lon Fok, Jae W Lee, Janelle Unger, Katherine Chan, Kristin E Musselman, Kei Masani

Physical Therapy Publications

Previous findings indicate that co-contractions of plantarflexors and dorsiflexors during quiet standing increase the ankle mechanical joint stiffness, resulting in increased postural sway. Balance impairments in individuals with incomplete spinal cord injury (iSCI) may be due to co-contractions like in other individuals with reduced balance ability. Here we investigated the effect of co-contraction between plantar- and dorsiflexors on postural balance in individuals with iSCI (iSCI-group) and able-bodied individuals (AB-group). Thirteen able-bodied individuals and 13 individuals with iSCI were asked to perform quiet standing with their eyes open (EO) and eyes closed (EC). Kinetics and electromyograms from the tibialis anterior (TA), …

Cardiovascular Health Intervention In Firefighters, Kyle T. Manuel Oct 2021

Cardiovascular Health Intervention In Firefighters, Kyle T. Manuel

Selected Honors Theses

As each year passes, a fatal cardiovascular event continues to be the leading cause of death among on-duty firefighters. Risk factors for a fatal cardiovascular event and cardiovascular health disease (CVD) are obesity, sleep deprivation, weight gain, lack of exercise, unhealthy diet, etc. The research in this thesis lays out the poor association between cardiovascular health and firefighters. Interventional programs that aim to improve the cardiovascular health of firefighters must be implemented universally to all fire departments by the International Association of Firefighters. Pertinent information collected on the cardiovascular health of surveyed firefighters of Hernando County was paradoxical. While most …
