Spiritual Care Competency Of Critical Care Nurses: A Literature Review, Julia O. Rohm Oct 2021

Spiritual Care Competency Of Critical Care Nurses: A Literature Review, Julia O. Rohm

Bachelors of Science in Nursing

While caring for their patients, nurses often encounter spiritual needs. In a study with 241 hospice, palliative care, and holistic nurses, “all respondents (100%) indicated they had encountered a patient with spiritual needs throughout their nursing clinical practice” (Lukovsky et al., 2021, p. 32). Despite the prevalence of spiritual needs, many nurses feel unable to confront spiritual issues among their patients. According to a survey conducted among 4054 nurses from the UK, “almost 93% of the nurses surveyed believed spiritual care should be addressed, yet only 5.3% felt always able to meet the spiritual need of patients on a regular …

Increasing Knowledge Of Fibromyalgia Diagnostic Criteria Using A Screening Tool In Primary Care, Diane Morris Oct 2021

Increasing Knowledge Of Fibromyalgia Diagnostic Criteria Using A Screening Tool In Primary Care, Diane Morris

Doctoral Projects

ABSTRACT

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic pain condition that is second only to osteoarthritis. Fibromyalgia dramatically impacts the quality of life, with its many symptoms requiring a multidisciplinary approach to treatment. The recommendation is that patients with fibromyalgia are treated in primary care, as are other chronic diagnoses such as hypertension and diabetes, with referrals to other disciplines as needed. However, some primary care providers may not recognize fibromyalgia as a valid diagnosis, have received inadequate formal training in fibromyalgia, and have limited awareness of diagnostic criteria.

According to the research, as many as 3 out of 4 people with …

A Safety Net: Early Assessment Of Multiple Social Determinants Of Health Risk Factors In The Pediatric Inpatient Population, Emily Caroline Brister

Doctoral Projects

A lack of protocol for screening of social determinants of health (SDH), specifically for pediatric patients, despite national endorsement, is setting a basis for increased rates of negative health outcomes that can follow individuals into adulthood. The PRAPARE tool, or the Protocol for Responding to and Assessing Patients’ Assets, Risks, and Experiences, is a guided national effort to assist healthcare centers in the collection of the necessary social data required to care for patients and act upon their social determinants of health (The National Association of Community Health Centers [NACHC], 2019). This project acted to identify if the early assessment …

Measuring The Development Of Depression In A Long-Term Care Facility, Cantrell Anderson Oct 2021

Measuring The Development Of Depression In A Long-Term Care Facility, Cantrell Anderson

Doctoral Projects

Depression is a severe global health problem (Almond, 2009; Brewis et al., 2018; Liu et al., 2019). According to the World Health Organization [WHO] (2020), depression is a problem that more than 264 million people suffer from. In comparison to older adults in the community, depression rates are significantly higher among older adults in long-term care. The treatment of older adults in long-term care is challenging. There are several risk factors that contribute to depression in this population, however, they are still not clear.

The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project was to measure the development of …

Environmental Health Sciences Faculty Scholarship

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted people's lives and food systems in the United States and worldwide, resulting in impacts on different aspects of food security. To understand how this has affected households in New York’s Capital Region, we conducted two concurrent anonymous online surveys between October 2020 and February 2021. Combined, 1049 people responded to these surveys.

We report on respondents' food security experiences since the COVID-19 pandemic started in New York State (March 7, 2020) compared to the prior year. We further explore the differential impacts of the pandemic on food security experiences by race and ethnicity, household income, …

Faculty Research 2021

BACKGROUND: The human tumor microenvironment (TME) is a complex and dynamic milieu of diverse acellular and cellular components, creating an immunosuppressive environment, which contributes to tumor progression. We have previously shown that phosphatidylserine (PS) expressed on the surface of exosomes isolated from human TMEs is causally linked to T-cell immunosuppression, representing a potential immunotherapeutic target. In this study, we investigated the effect of ExoBlock, a novel PS-binding molecule, on T-cell responses in the TME.

METHODS: We designed and synthesized a new compound, (ZnDPA)

RESULTS: ExoBlock was able to bind PS with high avidity and was found to consistently and significantly …

The Influence Of Parental Obesity On Children And Adolescents, Seth Seward, Kaylee Eckert Oct 2021

The Influence Of Parental Obesity On Children And Adolescents, Seth Seward, Kaylee Eckert

Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

Obesity in America is an epidemic, with a total of 42.4% of adults having a BMI over 30.0. In Healthy People 2030, America set the goal of decreasing childhood and adolescent obesity from 17.8% of our population to 15.5%. Obesity is directly related to a higher risk of developing hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, diabetes, asthma, anxiety, and depression. Through our literature review, we created the question 'During the ages of 2 to 18, are children and adolescents who have obese parents at an increased risk for obesity and related health diseases in comparison with children and adolescents who do not have obese …

The Impacts Of Consuming Peanuts During Pregnancy, Hannah Irons, Grace Jones Oct 2021

The Impacts Of Consuming Peanuts During Pregnancy, Hannah Irons, Grace Jones

Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

Peanut allergy accounts for the majority of severe food-related allergic reactions. Childhood allergies have increased in prevalence by 50% between 1997 to 2011 with peanut allergies almost tripling between 1997 and 2017 (Turke, 2017). It tends to present early in life and affected individuals usually do not outgrow it. Reactions to peanuts can range from mild to severe, such as anaphylaxis. The diagnosis of a peanut allergy is confirmed with the detection of peanut-specific IgE (Czolk R., 2021). The question remains "how does one develop a peanut allergy?" Our research project has used evidence-based practice and nursing research to determine …

Mandatory Nurse-To-Patient Ratios Impact On Nurse Satisfaction In California Icus, Emily Mcguire, Anna Schmied Oct 2021

Mandatory Nurse-To-Patient Ratios Impact On Nurse Satisfaction In California Icus, Emily Mcguire, Anna Schmied

Fall Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

The purpose of this research was to determine if nurse satisfaction was greater in California intensive care units (ICUs) where there is a mandatory nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:2, one registered nurse (RN) to two patients. Greater nurse satisfaction contributes to the overall improvement of both nurse and patient outcomes. Nurses who work in intensive care units experience high rates of mental distress and poor health due their job demands. Research shows that the mandatory nurse-to-patient ratios in California ICUs lead to fewer work injuries, greater nurse retention, and less burnout - all of which improves nurse satisfaction. This is compared …

Can 3d Printers Create Viable Personalized Therapy In The Treatment Of Diabetes?, Lyla White Oct 2021

Can 3d Printers Create Viable Personalized Therapy In The Treatment Of Diabetes?, Lyla White

Holster Scholar Projects

This study aimed to use 3D printing techniques to create a drug tablet containing two commonly used active ingredients (metformin and glyburide) for treating diabetes in a single pill. The hypothesis was that both drugs can be given in doses not available commercially and that these pills will have appropriate hardness, and extended-release dissolution. I was able to create 48 tablets that contained evenly dispersed active ingredient powder and met the weight requirements with consistency between tablets. Unfortunately, we had to substitute the usual bulk excipient for another because it was incompatible with the metformin and the replacement (mannitol) may …

A Curriculum Model For Multidisciplinary Training Of Midwife Sonographers In A Low Resource Setting, Sudhir Vinayak, Marleen Temmerman, Geert Villeirs, Sharon M. Brownie

Imaging & Diagnostic Radiology, East Africa

In many low-resource settings, less than 5% of pregnant women can access ultrasound during pregnancy. Thus, gestational age is often difficult to determine, multiple pregnancies are diagnosed late and foetal and pregnancy-related anomalies can go undetected. A pilot solution was designed beyond the traditional approach of increasing numbers of qualified radiologists, gynaecologists and sonographers. An innovative Human Resource for Health (HRH) task sharing, and maternal child health (MCH) workforce training and capacity building initiative was designed, involving development and testing of a curriculum to train midwife sonographers via a teleradiology innovation platform and a partnership between specialist radiologists, sonographers and …

Rhabdomyolysis And Covid-19, Brett T. Swanson

Student Publications

This paper seeks to summarize recent research findings concerning the link between rhabdomyolysis and COVID-19. While most commonly known as a respiratory disease, COVID-19 has strong direct effects on the kidneys which presents a serious challenge to treatment and care of patients. New research also suggests that COVID-19 directly damages skeletal muscle tissue as well, and rhabdomyolysis induced as a result of viral attack or secondary factors can also place major strain on the kidneys. Both COVID-19 and rhabdomyolysis can lead to acute kidney injury on their own, and their combined effects can present severe clinical complications. This body of …
