Brooke-Spiegler Syndrome: Familial Cylindromatosis, A Rare Variant Of A Rare Familial Syndrome., Harsh Patel, William Naber, Austin Cusick, Craig Oser
Ambulatory and Primary Care Articles
Brooke-Spiegler Syndrome (BSS) is a rare autosomal dominant familial disorder resulting in dermatologic neoplasms of copious nodular appendages. Here, we report a case of Familial Cylindromatosis (FC), a subtype of BSS, in a patient with the largest cylindroma of 7.4 × 5.6 × 3.8 cm on the scalp. The patient had undiagnosed cylindromas growing for 36 years at presentation; however, he did not seek out healthcare evaluation. Excision and pathologic investigation of three large masses from different body sites determined a shared phenotype of cylindromas. Subsequent evaluation of the patient's son separately, after primary patient excision, confirmed cylindroma development as …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Vanadium is one of the essential trace elements for mammals, which has important functions in the metabolism of carbohydrates. There is limited data about the effects of vanadium (IV) chloride supplementation on appetite-related hormones in literature. Our target was to analyse the impacts of vanadium supplementation on appetite-related hormone (leptin, nesfatin-1 and apelin) levels in rats with experimentally induced diabetes. Twenty eight male Sprague-Dawley albino rats were used in this study. After formation of diabetes, 0.3 mg/mL of vanadium was added to drinking water of rats for four weeks. A substantial increment was found in serum glucose (p < 0.001), HbA1c (p < 0.001), HOMA-IR (p < 0.01), and leptin (p < 0.001) levels and a significant decrease in insulin, apelin and nesfatin-1 concentrations in diabetic rats. Moreover, blood glucose, HbA1c, HOMA-IR, and leptin levels decreased in diabetic + vanadium group, but nesfatin-1 (1.74 ± 0.94 ng/mL), apelin (1.74 ± 0.94 ng/mL), and insulin concentrations were found higher compared with the diabetic group. As a result of this study, vanadium has increased the levels of circulating nesfatin-1 and apelin levels in diabetic rats while decreasing blood glucose and leptin concentrations. But further studies are required to determine the blood glucose lowering effects of vanadium and its relationship with appetite related hormones in diabet.

Detection Of Varroa Mites From Honey Bee Hives By Smart Technology Var-Gor: A Hivemonitoring And Image Processing Device, Sedat Sevi̇n, Hi̇dayet Tutun, Seli̇me Mutlu
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The major honey bee parasite Varroa destructor reduces hive vitality and honey yields by preventing growth of heathy bees and causes drastic loss in apiculture. Therefore, mite infestation in honey bee needs to be constantly controlled by beekeepers. To minimize this loss, a system called Var-Gor has been developed with the aim of controlling Varroa mite infestation before/just after entering the hive instead of the late period. Var-Gor is a hive entrance attachable device box consist of bee passage tunnels (width: 25 mm, height: 15 mm, and depth: 50 mm), autofocus detection camera combined with interface (process sensor: IV-HG10) and …

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) regulate many physiological pathways, including development, cell differentiation, immune response as well as diseases by post-transcriptional processes. However, information is limited regarding the biological roles of miRNAs in the development of the follicular and luteal tissues in cows. The main aim of the present study was to identify miRNAs that are expressed in the follicular and luteal tissues of cows. We used a comparative RNA sequencing method to identify miRNA candidates that might play key roles in the follicular and luteal phases of Holstein cows. Nine miRNAs were expressed at a high ratio: 8 in the follicular tissue …

The Modern Use Of The Extended Humeral Head (Cuff Tear Arthropathy) Hemiarthroplasty., Tyler J Smith, Sarav S Shah, Justin W Peterson, Glen Ross
Orthopedic Surgery Resident Research
Today, the treatment of osteoarthritis in the rotator cuff-deficient population is largely dominated by reverse shoulder arthroplasty (RSA). Despite the popularity of and increased familiarity with this procedure, the complication rate of RSA remains significant. An extended humeral head hemiarthroplasty may provide a less invasive alternative for select patients with cuff tear arthropathy (CTA) and preserved glenohumeral active elevation. With the indications for reverse arthroplasty expanding to younger patients, there are concerns about the longevity of this implant, as well as the associated revision burden. In the setting of failed RSA, the bone stock available for glenosphere baseplate fixation can …

Incorporating Psychological Trauma Into Adhd Differentials: A Pilot Study Of Primary Care Providers' Perspectives, Amber Nipper
PsyD Program in Clinical Psychology Doctoral Dissertations (Seattle)
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP, n.d.), 40% to 50% of individuals seeking mental health services terminate prematurely due to lack of access, lack of transportation, financial constraints, child mental health professional shortages, and stigma related to mental health. These barriers contribute to primary care providers assessing and managing mental health concerns at increasing rates, particularly symptoms consistent with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). ADHD is a neurobiological disorder beginning in childhood that is defined as “a persistent pattern of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that interferes with functioning or development” (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2013, p. 59). Current literature shows …

Background: Food insecurity is a global problem that requires a One Health approach. As many households in low- and middle-income nations rely on crops and livestock that they produce to meet their household’s needs, food security and nutrition are closely linked to the health of animals and the environment. Resources controlled by women are more often allocated to uses that benefit the entire household, such as food, health, and educating children, than men’s resources. However, studies of gender control of resources among pastoralist societies are scant. We examined the effect of female and male control of livestock resources on food …

Responses Of Predatory Myxobacteria To Prey Signaling Molecules & Features Of A Pseudomonas Prey Avoiding Predation, Shukria Akbar
Responses Of Predatory Myxobacteria To Prey Signaling Molecules & Features Of A Pseudomonas Prey Avoiding Predation, Shukria Akbar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Gram-negative unicellular myxobacteria, along with their multicellular lifestyle andbiologically active specialized metabolites, are known for the predatory interactions with Gram-negative/ Gram-positive bacteria and fungi. Although myxobacterial predation range have been exploited extensively, little is known about the prey associated molecules contributing to myxobacterial predator-prey dynamics. By employing transcriptomics and untargeted metabolomics approaches, we demonstrate two structurally distinct classes of signaling molecules from Gram-negative bacterial prey elicit significant omics responses from myxobacteria, Myxococcus xanthus and Cystobacter ferrugineus. An overlapping and general response to acylhomoserine lactones, whereas a distinctive response to a quinolone signaling molecule is observed from both myxobacteria. Similarly, by …

Despite improved overall survival among breast cancer patients, race and biological subtype-specific disparities persist. Subsequently, this retrospective longitudinal study, guided by ecosocial theory, examined associations between biological subtypes of breast cancer and patient-level sociodemographic factors on survival outcomes in women 25 to 44 years of age. Using Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database, 34,007 breast cancer cases between 2013 and 2018 were extracted. Kaplan Meier method and Cox proportional hazards model were used to examine time to event and the adjusted mortality risk by race and breast cancer subtype. There was a statistically significant difference in survival among young …
Exploring Quality Management Strategies To Mitigate Culture Shock Among Cochlear Implant Users, Victor Mulume' Ambila
Exploring Quality Management Strategies To Mitigate Culture Shock Among Cochlear Implant Users, Victor Mulume' Ambila
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractAfter the cochlear implant (CI) activation period and therapy, adult CI users who travel overseas encounter culture shock factors that paralyze their coping capability, which need normalization through management strategies during the post-cochlear-implantation process (PCIP). In the structure of the conceptual framework, a plan is presented for addressing the management strategy. An integrated system of product-process-service-care portrays the product as an active implant within an individual bearer fostering a CI user’s physical, physiological, and psychological traits. The problematic aspects alter the end users’ coping capability in an unfamiliar host environment abroad. The qualitative research approach used was a single case …

Developing A Presimulation Protocol For Prostate Cancer Patients Undergoing Radiotherapy, Jennifer Wieworka
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Inadequate preparation of prostate cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy (RT) can damage healthy tissue and cause long-term complications. Proper setup can reduce side effects. Currently, there are no standardized guidelines to help prepare patients for prostate radiation. Guidelines will help nurses coordinate care and manage symptoms for these patients. The purpose of this doctoral project was to address the gap in practice of the lack of a standardized process for implementing presimulation interventions for patients with prostate cancer undergoing RT by developing an evidence-based clinical practice guideline (CPG). The practice question for this project focused on the best practices contributing …

Hospital-Acquired Condition Ranking Score Among Types Of Safety-Net Hospitals, Jude C. Iruka
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Abstract The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services has been shifting from paying hospitals for the volume of services they delivered to paying them for the quality of those services, known as pay-for-performance, to incentivize hospitals to offer improved care at a lower cost. When a patient goes to the hospital to receive care for one condition and develops another condition during that hospital stay, the second condition is referred to as a hospital-acquired condition. It is anticipated that 1.7 million infections are acquired at some point in-hospital stay in the United States annually, resulting in nearly 100,000 deaths in …

Abstract
In the United States, approximately 10 million adults 50 years and older are plagued by osteoporosis; this number has been projected to climb to 14 million by 2020. Osteoporosis is a debilitating disorder characterized by significant loss of bone mass and mineral density. Without proper screening and diagnosis, patients may not receive the appropriate medical treatments to avoid worsening of their condition and its associated complications. Nurses can help identify patients at risk for osteoporosis by administering osteoporosis screening during routine office visits. The practice-focused question asked whether the Fracture Risk Assessment Tool (FRAX) increased the proportion of bone …

Introduction: On 1 October 2015, the USA transitioned from the International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) to the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10-CM). Considering the major changes to drug overdose coding, we examined how using different approaches to define all-drug overdose and opioid overdose morbidity indicators in ICD-9-CM impacts longitudinal analyses that span the transition, using emergency department (ED) and hospitalisation data from six states’ hospital discharge data systems.
Methods: We calculated monthly all-drug and opioid overdose ED visit rates and hospitalisation rates (per 100 000 population) by state, starting in January 2010. We applied …
The Lived Experiences Of Avoiding Recidivism Among African American Male (First-Time) Former Offenders, Jeff Hines
The Lived Experiences Of Avoiding Recidivism Among African American Male (First-Time) Former Offenders, Jeff Hines
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractThe United States has a high recidivism rate within its criminal population, especially among men of African American descent. However, within this population, some first-time former offenders have used successful approaches to avoid re-incarceration. The objective of this study was to investigate how these first-time former offenders desist from crime and avoid recidivism. This was a phenomenological study, utilizing the Desistance Theory as a framework, to explore how these men survived the consequences of post-incarceration and remained crime-free. In-depth, semi-structured, open-ended interviews were conducted with six African American male first-time former offenders (age 25 and older) who were not on …
Importance Of Childhood Maltreatment On Borderline Personality In Adults: Meta-Analysis, Lisa Nicole Trentacosti
Importance Of Childhood Maltreatment On Borderline Personality In Adults: Meta-Analysis, Lisa Nicole Trentacosti
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Early childhood maltreatment (CM) is a risk factor for later psychopathology specifically Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). CM has been found to negatively affect social, emotional, and psychological development as well as the ability to foster and sustain interpersonal relationships throughout all stages of life. There are evidence-based interventions for different kinds of CM including Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavior Therapy (TF-CBT), Alternatives for Families - Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (AF-CBT), relaxation training, and social skills training. The current study is a meta-analysis of published research into CM as it contributes to BPD in adults and is designed to examine the effect size of childhood …
Responses Of Myxobacteria To Plant-Related Chemosignals Suggests Their Roles In The Rhizobiome, Barbara Iyare Adaikpoh

In the rhizosphere, plants curate and maintain distinct rhizobiome, some of which serve as secondary defense mechanisms against pathogenic microorganisms. Additionally, in response to biotic stress, plants generate phytohormones which regulate signaling pathways to activate systemic resistance. These phytohormones contribute to the chemical space within the rhizosphere in addition to other low-molecular-weight metabolites used for cell-to-cell communication within species and across kingdoms. However, little is known about the influences of stress-related phytohormones on beneficial bacteria even though biocontrol strategies abundantly explore plant-beneficial microorganisms to manage pathogens in agricultural systems. Myxobacteria are competent predators of plant pathogens and have demonstrated responses …
Influence Of Rage Signaling On Cellular Communication In Diabetes-Mediated Vascular Calcification, Amber Michelle Kennon

Chronic hyperglycemia is one of the main characteristics of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). With the increased prevalence of T2DM, the risk of cardiovascular complications, including heart attack or stroke, is increased. Complications linked to the vasculature are increased vascular calcification (VC) or mineral deposition within the medial layer of conducting arteries. Under calcification conditions, vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) undergo an osteogenic switch to an osteoblast-like cell and begin producing bone proteins. Chronic hyperglycemia can also result in increased extracellular matrix (ECM) synthesis, accumulation, and crosslinking. One of the cell types responsible for increased ECM synthesis are ‘activated’ fibroblasts …
