Design, Synthesis, And Evaluation Of Glutathione Derivatives As Brain Targeting Agents, Yue Huang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Treatment of central nervous system (CNS) diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s diseases, and brain tumors, is still a challenge due to the existence of the blood-brain barrier (BBB). The BBB as a membrane barrier that separates systemic blood circulation from the CNS is structurally formed by endothelial cells, astrocyte, pericyte and neurons and is one of the crucial protection mechanisms for the CNS. The BBB protects the brain by preventing foreign compounds (non-endogenous compounds) from entering the brain and helps maintain brain homeostasis. In addition, the presence of drug efflux pumps (i.e., P-glycoproteins, multidrug-resistance proteins) in the BBB helps …

Cortisol In Hair As A Measure Of Chronic Stress During Sow Gestation And The Pattern Of Cortisol In Blood During Parturition In Sows, Talia Everding
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Cortisol is known as the stress hormone, as it influences many metabolic processes to maintain glucose homeostasis during stressful experiences, including physical and psychological stress. It can be detected in biological matrices such as blood and hair and is released rapidly during sudden stressors and continuously during longterm stress. Blood cortisol fluctuates rapidly in response to acute stressors like pain, exertion, and fear; in hair cortisol accumulates steadily over the period of hair growth and may be useful for detecting chronically elevated cortisol resulting from long-term stress. The objective of this research was to, 1) determine the influence of a …

Barefoot weightlifting has become a popular training modality in recent years due to anecdotal suggestions of improved performance. However, research to support these anecdotal claims is limited. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the differences between the conventional deadlift (CD) and the sumo deadlift (SD) in barefoot and shod conditions. On day one, one-repetition maximums (1 RM) were assessed for thirty subjects in both the CD and SD styles. At least 72 h later, subjects returned to perform five repetitions in four different conditions (barefoot and shod for both CD and SD) at 70% 1 RM. A …

Genomic Education – Bench To Bedside: A Novel Approach To Teaching Genetic Diagnosis, J. Keith Williams, Michael M. Segal, Lynn K. Feldman
Genomic Education – Bench To Bedside: A Novel Approach To Teaching Genetic Diagnosis, J. Keith Williams, Michael M. Segal, Lynn K. Feldman
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Problem: Teaching genetic diagnosis is required in all medical schools and physician assistant programs. However, with thousands of relevant findings and thousands more rare diseases, lectures and narrative resources are inadequate for the task. Whatever information that is taught is easily forgotten and does not carry over into the clinic. Many rare disease patients suffer through “diagnostic odysseys” (3 to 30 years to correct diagnosis). Approach: We used a commercially available diagnostic decision support system (DDSS) that encompasses all Mendelian disorders with known genes, together with other conditions in their differential diagnosis, and a case-based educational approach to teach diagnostic …

The human microbiome has been shown to play a role in the regulation of human health, behavior, and disease. Data suggests that microorganisms that co-evolved within humans have an enhanced ability to prevent the development of a large spectrum of immune-related disorders but may also lead to the onset of conditions when homeostasis is disrupted. In many conditions, a link between dysbiosis (microbial imbalance or microbiome upset) has been identified and associated with immune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This review provides insight into how an individual’s unique microbiome, combined with a genetic predisposition and environmental factors may lead …

School of Medical Diagnostics & Translational Sciences Publications
The delivery of pulsed electric fields to biological cells for regenerative research and therapeutic applications is a field that has been widely explored. Picosecond pulsed electric fields have been shown to induce intracellular effects and directly target cell membrane proteins as well as being able to induce cell permeabilization and death by apoptosis. Additionally, ultrashort pulses can be focused and delivered in a noncontact manner for possible targeting of deep and inaccessible tissues. The unique characteristics of picosecond pulses make them a possible approach for treatment of Huntington's and Alzheimer's diseases, both characterized by progressive neuronal degeneration and death, and …

Simulation Of A Rat Muscle-Tendon Unit With Hill-Type Model Dynamics And The Study Of Viscoelasticity In A Collagen Molecule Via Molecular Dynamics, Veronica Siko
West Chester University Master’s Theses
The field of biological science has established that tendons transfer muscular forces to adjacent bones, but there is a dearth of information about the underlying physical principles of these interactions and how the property of viscoelasticity (displayed in tendons as a difference in mechanical response to stress with differing stretching rates) is encompassed in the collagen of tendons. This thesis details the results of concentric and eccentric contractions of the rat muscle-tendon unit (MTU) with and without viscoelasticity (concentric contraction requires active shortening of the muscle, while eccentric contraction requires active lengthening of the muscle) (Lovering & Brooks, 2014). Once …
