How Long Does It Take For A Voice To Become Familiar? Speech Intelligibility And Voice Recognition Are Differentially Sensitive To Voice Training, Emma Holmes, Grace To, Ingrid S. Johnsrude
Communication Sciences and Disorders Publications
When people listen to speech in noisy places, they can understand more words spoken by someone familiar, such as a friend or partner, than someone unfamiliar. Yet we know little about how voice familiarity develops over time. We exposed participants (N = 50) to three voices for different lengths of time (speaking 88, 166, or 478 sentences during familiarization and training). These previously heard voices were recognizable and more intelligible when presented with a competing talker than novel voices—even the voice previously heard for the shortest duration. However, recognition and intelligibility improved at different rates with longer exposures. Whereas recognition …

Abstract
Purpose: Routine spoken language outcome monitoring is one component of Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) programs for children who are hard of hearing and learning a spoken language. However, there is no peerreviewed research that documents how spoken language outcome monitoring may be achieved, or what processes EHDI programs can use to develop these procedures. The present article describes the process used by a Canadian EHDI program and the final recommendations that were developed from this process.
Methodology: Through consultation with the program’s stakeholders, consideration of the Joint Committee on Infant Hearing’s recommendations, and drawing on our own …

The Effect Of Dual-Task Testing On Balance And Gait Performance In Adults With Type 1 Or Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: A Systematic Review, Humberto Omana, Edward Madou, Manuel Montero-Odasso, Michael Payne, Ricardo Viana, Susan W. Hunter
Physical Therapy Publications
BACKGROUND: Individuals with diabetes mellitus (DM) are susceptible to balance, gait and cognitive impairments. Importantly, diabetes affects executive function, a set of cognitive processes critical to everyday cortical function and mobility. Reduced executive function is a risk factor for falls in people with DM. Dual-task testing, the completion of two tasks at once, enables the examination of the cognitive-mobility relationship. A synthesis of the literature on the effects of dual- task testing on the balance and gait of individuals with DM has not been performed.
OBJECTIVE: To systematically review the literature on the effect of dual-task testing on balance and …

Nebraska Rural Poll
Most rural Nebraskans felt various impacts from the pandemic. While many rural Nebraskans had someone in their household that quarantined because of possible coronavirus exposure or who contracted COVID-19, most have friends or family in their community that quarantined or contracted the virus. Many rural Nebraskans also have friends or family both inside and outside their community who were hospitalized as a result of COVID-19 or who died as a result of it.
Most rural Nebraskans say the following were affected a fair amount or a great deal by the pandemic: their socialization with others, their life overall, and their …

The Open Neuroscience Initiative is a free-to-use textbook
This project began as a means to overcoming the financial burden that face undergraduate neuroscience students when buying textbooks. By compiling and writing a completely free-to-access textbook that covers the foundations of a typical college introduction to neuroscience course, students would have one less obstacle to overcome in their educational career, allowing them to focus their valuable time and attention on learning rather than finances. To make this project a reality, I began with a humble tweet in May 2019 that managed to gain a tiny bit of traction among the neuroscience …
Satisfaction Of Telehealth For The 55+ Population, Cynthia Schweizer
Satisfaction Of Telehealth For The 55+ Population, Cynthia Schweizer
Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects
There is a primary care need for the 55+-year-old population related to the increasing aging population, physician shortages, and, more recently, Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) to implement Telehealth care. The Telehealth project will include the 55+ population to provide more participants for the project at an internal medicine clinic. Telehealth's contribution and interventions will affect causal factors such as moderating or mediating factors of health problems. Some of those factors include insufficient primary care coverage due to decreasing numbers of primary care providers (PCP), the increasing older population, complex health issues that come with aging, the need for frequent follow-up …

Understanding and eliminating minority health disparities in a 21st-century pandemic: A White Paper Collection
Racial and ethnic minorities, those of lower socioeconomic status (SES), and older adults have experienced higher rates of infection, severity of illness, and mortality from COVID-19 than other groups. These populations are also disproportionately affected by financial and social disruptions caused by the pandemic, including job loss, reduction in community services, and disconnection from supportive networks critically important for the health and well-being of families. Further, these same populations often live in multi- generational households and rely on a family-dependent caregiver model. The aim of this project is to beta test an online questionnaire to identify individual and household risk …

Understanding and eliminating minority health disparities in a 21st-century pandemic: A White Paper Collection
New York City has lost more lives from COVID-19 than any other American city. Our paper examines variation in COVID-19 deaths across neighborhoods as it relates to the spatial variation in the racial, ethnic, and nativity-status composition of neighborhoods. This topic has received little scholarly attention and is imperative to explore, given the absence of racial and ethnic specific COVID-19 mortality rates by neighborhood. New York City is a racially and ethnically segregated city and a longstanding destination of immigrants, making some neighborhoods more susceptible to greater levels of COVID-19 mortality than others. Using ZCTA-level data on COVID-19 deaths and …

Literature Review: Covid-19'S Impact On Violence, Jean Cheek, Laura Ashworth
VCU Health Nursing
Violence has been exacerbated by the pandemic, resulting in a plethora of research that can be complementary and contradictory. A preliminary thematic literature search was performed using keywords such as human trafficking, IPV, sexual assault, pandemic, covid, and child abuse. This resulted in over 100 articles between 2019 and 2021. The literature review revealed common themes such as pandemics and natural disasters increase the risk for violence in women, children, and marginalized populations. Stay-at-home orders put vulnerable populations in closer proximity to the abuser. A low socioeconomic standing increases the propensity to abuse and be abused. Calls to human trafficking …

Crippling Rapid Evolution Of Metastasis And Drug Resistance In A549 Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Cells With The Clinically Relevant Hsp90 Inhibitor Auy922, Nickolas Anthony Bacon
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
The ability for species to evolve new features in response to changing circumstances in order to survive and propagate is a ubiquitous observation on both the macroscopic and microscopic levels of living systems. It should be no surprise, then, that diseases such as cancer utilize their own forms of adaptation to perpetuate themselves when exposed to external threats. Indeed, concepts drawn from Darwinian evolution are now widely accepted to help explain certain aspects of carcinogenesis and malignant progression, the sum of which have come to be known as the theory of tumor evolution. Since metastasis and drug resistance are features …

Lay Down Your Arms: Does A Novel Avian Schistosome Cause Swimmer’S Itch?, Nathan Anderson, Randall Dejong
Summer Research
Cercarial dermatitis, or swimmer’s itch (SI), is a highly irritating rash that humans can get after swimming in inland lakes and ponds. The rash is caused by the immune response to certain blood flukes, within the family Schistosomatidae, penetrating and dying within the skin. Earlier this year, researchers announced the discovery of a new avian schistosome that might also contribute to the SI nuisance. The schistosome, hereafter referred to as HAS (Helisoma Avian Schistosome), was discovered in a Helisoma snail and later in the fecal matter of a Canada goose. To test human reactivity to HAS, we designed three experiments …

- TCE is a volatile organic solvent used in industrial processes and a known human carcinogen.
- GBS is a common bacteria in the vaginal flora but can lead to complications such as preterm birth during pregnancy.
- Co-treatment (GBS+DCVC) in placental membranes lead to inhibition of pathogen stimulated cytokine secretion
- We hypothesized that along with cytokine secretion, GBS+DCVC co-exposure would have impacts on MMP-9 (a protein involved in gestational membrane degradation) 4 and prostaglandin E2 (a hormone involved in cervical ripening and labor induction) 5, two important proteins in pregnancy and labor

Low-Dose Computed Tomography & Lung Cancer Screening, Brandon Kessler
Medical Imaging Senior Posters
Lung cancer is the most common cancer in the world, and could have devastating effects to one’s health if not caught early enough. In order to combat this, the implementation of low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) lung cancer screenings can be used to help detect the cancer early. Questionnaires are used in order to determine if people are high-risk for developing lung cancer and qualify for this scan. Physicians have been reported to believe in these screenings and feel they help improve survival rates and early diagnosis of lung cancer. Although there are many positives with LDCT, there are also some …

Doubly Burdened: Race-Ethnic Disparities In The Effects Of Covid-19 And Covid-19 Mitigation Strategies, Ashley Fox, Yongjin Choi
Understanding and eliminating minority health disparities in a 21st-century pandemic: A White Paper Collection
Black and Hispanic populations across New York State and around the United States have been disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 both in terms of COVID-19 associated morbidity and mortality but also bearing a larger burden of the economic impacts. Race-ethnic minorities also experience more longstanding and justified distrust of the medical community, which could serve to prolong the pandemic effects in the most vulnerable communities by contributing to reduced vaccine uptake. This paper reports the results of a survey fielded in November 2020 with an oversampling of Non-Hispanic Black and Hispanic respondents across New York State concerning the impacts of the …

An Emergent Legionnaires' Disease Syndemic: Water Supply Systems, Infrastructural Violence, And Afflicted Lives In The South Bronx, Ny, Eduardo Piqueiras
Wayne State University Dissertations
This dissertation examines how contemporary approaches to Legionnaires’ disease (LD) narrowly view it as a biomedical entity that obscures critical moral, temporal, and contextual dimensions creating gaps in how LD “cases” are defined and mitigated. Those who receive an LD diagnosis experience many unique challenges (e.g., personal, existential, community-based, and environmental) yet little is known about how this group of individuals experience recovery and attach meaning to their individual experiences. Using an anthropological lens of illness and recovery and a syndemics view of infrastructural violence this study examines those inadequately addressed multiple dimensions which limit our ability to confront the …

MATERIALS AND METHODS: Quantitative expression of the RNA of these 17 genes in normal and cancerous tissues obtained using chip arrays from the public functional genomics data repository, Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) application, was compared statistically. RESULTS: Expression of four genes, (angiotensinogen), (aminopeptidase A) (neprilysin), and (prolyl endopeptidase), was significantly upregulated in CRC specimens. Expression of (renin), (thimet oligopeptidase), (neurolysin), (prolyl carboxypeptidase), (aminopeptidase N), and (Mas receptor) was downregulated in CRC specimens. CONCLUSIONS: Presuming gene expression parallel protein expression, these results suggest that increased production of the angiotensinogen precursor of angiotensin (ANG) peptides, with the reduction of the enzymes that …

A Solution For Breaking The Impasse Of Burnout Measurement, Renzo Bianchi, Irvin Sam Schonfeld
Publications and Research
In view of the profound problems affecting burnout’s conceptualization and measurement and because there is now robust evidence that burnout is a depressive condition, we recommend that occupational health specialists shift their focus from burnout to depression. A measure of job-related depressive symptoms, the Occupational Depression Inventory (ODI), has recently been developed. Advantageously, the ODI resolves many of the persistent problems linked to burnout while being consistent with burnout researchers’ original aim of assessing a work-attributed form of distress. The ODI includes a diagnostic algorithm that allows investigators to estimate the prevalence of depressive disorders that individuals specifically ascribe to …
