Types of mammography exams, different projections, breast cancer, equipment definitions, advantages, and disadvantages are also discussed. Breast cancer is one of the most common and most treatable types of cancer detected in women. Equipment is frequently evolving to better improve image quality and patient comfort. DM takes a stationary image of the compressed breast at one angle while DBT takes images in slices at multiple angles. This allows for better visualization …

Metallic Artifact Reduction Capabilities Of Dual-Energy Computed Tomography (Dect), Kevin Kinney Jan 2021

Metallic Artifact Reduction Capabilities Of Dual-Energy Computed Tomography (Dect), Kevin Kinney

Student Research Poster Presentations 2021

This project explains the artifact reduction capabilities of dual-energy computed tomography (DECT) systems, and how to maximize this when imaging patients with metallic hardware, such as spinal implants. Implants consisting of titanium alloys, cobalt alloys, or stainless steel, present difficulties when imaging due to their likelihood to cause significant shading and streaking image artifacts. These artifacts are mainly the result of beam hardening and photon starvation from the x-ray beam’s interaction with dense, metallic structures. Dual-energy image acquisition allows for the potential to utilize basis material decomposition to virtually simulate a single energy acquired image. This process, known as monoenergetic …

Architectural Distortion With The Use Of Tomosynthesis, Madison Skwirut Jan 2021

Architectural Distortion With The Use Of Tomosynthesis, Madison Skwirut

Student Research Poster Presentations 2021

Abstract

Architectural distortion on digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) can occur due to benign and malignant causes. DBT is a mammographic technique that incorporates multiple angular projections of the breast to enable three-dimensional reconstruction while only compressing the breast once. DBT creates a better detection of distortion compared to a 2D mammography. Architectural distortion is found when the two breasts are compared and one breast has an abnormal tissue pattern. When examining the two breast with each other they should mirror one another, so when there is architectural distortion there could be contour abnormalities, trabecular thickening, and trabecular disorganization. When architectural …

A Comparison Of Sglt2 Inhibitors To Current Guideline Directed Medical Therapy For The Treatment Of Heart Failure In Non-Diabetic Patients, Rebecca R. Beyer

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

Heart failure remains a complex disease that affects an increasing number of patients annually. For heart failure, most of the research has focused on the hemodynamic changes of the heart chambers and the medications that slow the disease progression. Recent studies have investigated treatment options that may disrupt the neuro-hormonal and pathophysiologic cell changes that lead to further progression of heart failure. Although the mechanisms by which the sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors are not entirely understood, they are believed to directly affect the cardiac electrolyte imbalances that trigger the cellular changes which contribute to the altered contractility, adrenergic receptor …

Selective Toxicity Of Mx106-4c, A Survivin Inhibitor, To Abcb1 Positive Multidrug Resistant Colon Cancer, Zining Lei Jan 2021

Selective Toxicity Of Mx106-4c, A Survivin Inhibitor, To Abcb1 Positive Multidrug Resistant Colon Cancer, Zining Lei

Theses and Dissertations

Multidrug resistance (MDR) is a major challenge in colon cancer chemotherapy, which is typically mediated by the overexpression of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters, particularly ABCB1 (P-gp, MDR1). The application of ABCB1 inhibitors to overcome ABCB1-mediated MDR has been disappointing in the clinical settings. As an alternative approach, a synthetic analog of survivin inhibitor MX106, MX106-4C, was identified as a potent collateral sensitivity (CS) agent that selectively exerted more than 10-fold cytotoxicity on ABCB1 positive MDR colon cancer cell lines compared to cell lines with low ABCB1 expression. Biochemical assays revealed that MX106-4C did not affect the ATPase activity or the …
