Nurse Residency Programs: Are They Beneficial?, Nadiyah A. Rivera Jan 2021

Nurse Residency Programs: Are They Beneficial?, Nadiyah A. Rivera

Student Research Poster Presentations 2021

New graduate nurses often feel unprepared for professional practice. Nurse Residency Programs were developed in order to prepare graduate nurses for professional practice within the hospital. Nurse residency programs prepare new graduate nursing students by enhancing their critical thinking skills and role satisfaction before transitioning to professional nursing practice. Establishment of nurse residency programs leads to more competent nurses and better patient care. These programs increase critical thinking skills, competence, and preparedness, which leads to higher retention rates. Nurse residency programs demonstrated that there is a smoother transition from graduate nurse to registered nurse and improves both quality and safety …

The Effect Of Different Balance Training Protocols On Athletes With Chronic Ankle Instability: A Systematic Review, Jonathan Boruta, Nate Macdonald, Zackery Wroniuk-Evans, Joshua Wilkes

Student Research Poster Presentations 2021

Chronic Ankle Instability (CAI) is a prevalent topic in the world of sports physical therapy due to the high incidence of ankle sprains among athletes. Differing opinions on methods of treatment for CAI has generated an influx of research regarding the effectiveness of different treatment protocols. Unstable balance training, plyometrics/hop stabilization training, resistance training with balance, and combined interventions are currently being researched to determine their effects on athletes with CAI.

Do Quality Improvement Projects Improve Health Outcomes?, Stephanie Kolodzieski Jan 2021

Do Quality Improvement Projects Improve Health Outcomes?, Stephanie Kolodzieski

Student Research Poster Presentations 2021

Quality improvement projects play an important role in healthcare by improving the quality and safety of care that patients receive. A specific quality improvement project about catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) was evaluated to determine if the quality of care improved after a multi-faceted CAUTI prevention educational program was offered to nurses on hospital units with high rates of CAUTI. The results showed that this quality improvement project did improve health outcomes by resulting in decreased rates of CAUTI. This is a key finding because nurses play a major role in preventing CAUTI among hospitalized patients.

Student Research Poster Presentations 2021

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer and prostate cancer are two of the most common cancers seen in females and males respectively worldwide. Treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, and androgen deprivation therapy are essential to combat cancerous cells. However, the lasting side effects of these lifesaving treatments can impact an individual’s quality of life and muscle strength without appropriate intervention. While exercise has been shown to be beneficial for patients with cancer, there is limited understanding of the effects of resistance training when performed concurrently with medical interventions.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this systematic review was to evaluate the impact of resistance training …

Protocol: The Effects Of Medical Cannabis On Pain And Quality Of Life In Individuals With Parkinson’S Disease And/Or Chronic Pain, Hailey S. Inge, Jenna M. Hiryak, Patrick Demichele, Olivia J. Meyer, Maureen Pascal

Student Research Poster Presentations 2021

Background: The opioid epidemic has led medical professionals to research alternative methods of pain reduction. There is limited evidence concerning the usage of medical cannabis and its effect on the symptoms associated with Parkinson’s disease and/or reduction of chronic pain. Pain is subjective and neurologically derived, therefore, an association of quality of life differentiation upon individuals with chronic illnesses such as Parkinson’s disease and chronic pain can add to the research of whether medical cannabis is an appropriate alternative treatment to influence pain perception.

Objective: The aim of this study is to identify a correlation between medical cannabis and Parkinson’s …

Nurses Can Make A Difference On The Impact The Uninsured/Underinsured Have On Health Care, Robert Burke Jan 2021

Nurses Can Make A Difference On The Impact The Uninsured/Underinsured Have On Health Care, Robert Burke

Student Research Poster Presentations 2021

The uninsured rate has increased from 2016 to 2019 and due to the Covid-19 outbreak in 2020 and unemployment, that number has likely jumped. Health care has proven to be costly, and the uninsured/underinsured population is viewed as a vulnerable population in the community due to a financial barrier or unemployed status that hinders their ability to receive the health care they need. It is proven that the uninsured/underinsured are more likely to forgo preventative care due to financial reasons. In addition, because the uninsured/underinsured are more likely to forgo preventative care they are more likely to be hospitalized with …

The Effectiveness Of Aquatic Therapy, Robot Assisted Gait Training, And Virtual Reality On Patients With Parkinson's Disease: A Literature Review, Atasha Rehrig, Kristen Southard Jan 2021

The Effectiveness Of Aquatic Therapy, Robot Assisted Gait Training, And Virtual Reality On Patients With Parkinson's Disease: A Literature Review, Atasha Rehrig, Kristen Southard

Student Research Poster Presentations 2021

Background & Purpose: Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that affects a person’s central nervous system (CNS) as well as dopamine production. Most cases of PD cause the patient to have postural instability, difficulty with ambulation, as well as a resting tremor. Patients diagnosed with PD show a slow decline in overall function and therefore, need to maintain physical activity in order to plateau PD. Traditionally, patients with PD undergo conventional methods of physical therapy (PT) to help plateau their disease. Our literature review looked into the effectiveness of non-traditional methods such as aquatic therapy, robot-assisted gait training …

The Positive Effects Of Malpractice In Nursing Practice, Jennifer Evans

Student Research Poster Presentations 2021

Malpractice to some has been viewed as a negative topic in nursing practice. However, it actually allows for positive influences to effect nursing practice. With the ongoing threat of lawsuits, it allows nurses to be better educated and learn from what not to do in their practice. It allows supervisors, and any other healthcare team member, to become more involved in the practice. Overall, it allows for the continuance of the safest care possible to patients.

Respiratory Gating In Radiation Therapy Without Adequate Breath-Holds, Ethan Snyder Jan 2021

Respiratory Gating In Radiation Therapy Without Adequate Breath-Holds, Ethan Snyder

Student Research Poster Presentations 2021

Respiratory gating is used in radiation therapy to maximize the effect of radiation on the target area while also minimizing radiation exposure to surrounding normal tissue. This is accomplished through the use of breath-holds during treatment. This study focuses on a specific patient who had difficulty holding their breath for the required treatment time. The question being asked was, would inadequate breath-holds lead to a negative effect on the patient’s outcome? This study was conducted by following the patient’s treatment course and comparing end results with similar patients who were able to complete breath-holds to a more satisfying degree. The …

The Efficacy Of Using Blood Flow Restriction Training On Proximal Muscle And Joint Rehabilitation: A Systematic Review, Bailey Brugler, Tristan Wright, Evan Brown, Johnathan Warg, Matt Cuomo

Student Research Poster Presentations 2021

Background: Blood flow restriction training (BFRT) when used with low-load exercise can improve muscular strength and recovery time in individuals attending rehab for distal extremity pathology. Current research suggests that BFRT when used proximally may elicit similar results.

Purpose: The aim of this systematic review was to analyze evidence regarding the efficacy for physical therapists to utilize BFRT for individuals attending therapy for proximal joint or trunk related injuries.

Method(s): A literature review was conducted by five reviewers using CINAHL, Medline, EBSCO, and Academic Search Ultimate. Articles were examined using the search terms (BFR or Blood flow restriction or Blood …
