According to a sentinel event statement issued by The Joint Commission in 2017, inadequate hand-off communication is responsible for many adverse-events, including sentinel events in healthcare. A study released in 2016 estimated that communication failures in U.S. hospitals and medical practices were responsible at least in part for 30 percent of all malpractice claims, resulting in 1,744 deaths and $1.7 billion in malpractice costs over five years(The Joint Commission [TJC], 2017). Successful handoff communication has the potential to substantially improve patient safety when leadership displays their commitment to successful handoff, when handoff is standardized and done face-to-face between healthcare providers, …
Administrative Interventions To Increase New Graduate Nurse Retention, Adam Ruff
Administrative Interventions To Increase New Graduate Nurse Retention, Adam Ruff
MSN Capstone Projects
Topic: Administrative Interventions to Increase New Graduate Nurse Retention
PICOT Question: In acute care units (P), how do employee engagement interventions from nursing administration (I) compared to no employee engagement interventions (C) affect new nurse turnover (O) within 3 months of hire (T)?
Rationale: New nurse retention and turnover is arguably the most significant factor affecting health administrators on a regular basis. This issue becomes even more pertinent as it is estimated that up to 40% of the nursing workforce is expected to retire within the next decade with new nurses becoming the best option to replace them. Administrative nursing …

Is Biventricular Vascular Coupling A Better Indicator Of Ventriculo-Ventricular Interaction In Congenital Heart Disease?, Emily L. Yang, Shelby Kutty, Brian D. Soriano, Sathish Mallenahalli, Mark R. Ferguson, Mark B. Lewin, Sujatha Buddhe
Journal Articles: Pediatrics
BACKGROUND: Ventriculo-ventricular interactions are known to exist, though not well quantified. We hypothesised that the ventricular-vascular coupling ratio assessed by cardiovascular MRI would provide insight into this relationship. We also sought to compare MRI-derived ventricular-vascular coupling ratio to echocardiography and patient outcomes.
METHODS: Children with cardiac disease and biventricular physiology were included. Sanz's and Bullet methods were used to calculate ventricular-vascular coupling ratio by MRI and echocardiography, respectively. Subgroup analysis was performed for right and left heart diseases. Univariate and multivariate regressions were performed to determine associations with outcomes.
RESULTS: A total of 55 patients (age 14.3 ± 2.5 years) …

The Many Faces Of Solitary Fibrous Tumor; Diversity Of Histological Features, Differential Diagnosis And Role Of Molecular Studies And Surrogate Markers In Avoiding Misdiagnosis And Predicting The Behavior, Muhammad Usman Tariq, Nasir Ud Din, Jamshid Abdul Ghafar, Yong-Koo Park
Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
Background: Solitary Fibrous Tumor (SFT) is a distinct soft tissue neoplasm associated with NAB2-STAT6 gene fusion. It can involve a number of anatomic sites and exhibits a wide spectrum of histological features.
Main body: Apart from diversity in morphological features seen even in conventional SFT, two histologic variants (fat-forming and giant cell-rich) are also recognized. In addition, a malignant form and dedifferentiation are well recognized. Owing to diverse histological features and involvement of diverse anatomic locations, SFT can mimic other soft tissue neoplasms of different lineages including schwannoma, spindle cell lipoma, dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans, liposarcoma, gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST), malignant peripheral …

Not-So-Low-Hanging Fruit: Journey From Identifying Hcv To Proving It Pathogen Of Hepatitis C, Xiaofei Fan, Cheng Zhou
Bulletin of Chinese Academy of Sciences (Chinese Version)
The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2020 was awarded jointly to Harvey J. Alter, Michael Houghton, and Charles M. Rice for their contributions in the discovery of hepatitis C virus (HCV). However, eight years lapsed between Houghton hunting down the virus in 1989 and Rice proving HCV alone could cause hepatitis in 1997. How did this seemingly low-hanging fruit turn out to take so long? We reviewed literature to piece together studies during those years, and determined contributions by different groups (Rice's group included). Through a close look into its performance at two milestones (determining the 3'-terminal sequence of …
