Meaningful Measurement Of Diversity Initiative Outcomes, Cheryl Thompson
Meaningful Measurement Of Diversity Initiative Outcomes, Cheryl Thompson
Posters and Presentations: State of the Art Nursing Conference
Diversification of students graduating from Nebraska colleges and schools of nursing is essential to providing a diverse healthcare workforce. Diversity related strategic plans typically include goals expressed using terms such as “increase”, “improve”, or “enhance” the diversity of their applicant pools or graduates. Less common is the practice of providing specific quantitative goals for setting or measuring progress towards expressed goals. This session will demonstrate a method for evaluating current diversity of students or graduates, setting concrete, measurable goals or benchmarks, and evaluating the outcome of diversity initiatives. Participants will take home a detailed tool for determining if recruitment, admission, …

Analytic Appraoch To Determining Causes Of Graduate Student Attrition, Cheryl Thompson
Posters and Presentations: State of the Art Nursing Conference
Student data is collected for a variety of uses from application to graduation. Data is most often collected and stored in a fashion that supports single student data retrieval or mass processing of data, for uses such as preparation for graduation. Because of this, retrieving data for use in analytic reports and for problem solving across cohorts of students is often more difficult. Student services staff may have difficulty explaining to technology staff the nuances required to meet their data needs, particularly when multiple individual queries are needed to reach an answer. One such example is identifying the circumstances leading …

We examined the effects of an Antrodia cinnamomea ethanol extract (ACEE) on lung cancer cells in vitro and tumor growth in vivo. ACEE produced dose-dependent cytotoxic effects and induced apoptosis in Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC) cells. ACEE treatment increased expression of p53 and Bax, as well as cleavage of caspase-3 and PARP, while reducing expression of survivin and Bcl-2. ACEE also reduced the levels of JAK2 and phosphorylated STAT3 in LLC cells. In a murine allograft tumor model, oral administration of ACEE significantly inhibited LLC tumor growth and metastasis without affecting serum biological parameters or body weight. ACEE increased cleavage …

Breathe In Breathe Out...Now What? Improved Pediatric Asthma Outcomes Through Improved Inhaler Technique, Gina M. Nickels-Nelson
DNP Final Reports
Asthma is a chronic disease affecting families in the United States; especially pediatric patients aged 5-18. In Pittsfield, Massachusetts the local prevalence of asthma is 14.4% versus 12.1% statewide and 8.4% nationally. These patients miss school days thus causing parental workday loss. In 2016, 14.4 million missed school days occurred due to asthma (Alexander et al., 2016). Unexpected clinic visits, as well as emergency room visits due to asthma, can contribute to rising healthcare costs both locally and nationally. Unexpected asthma visits are a leading reason for visits to this author’s clinic.
Asthma is treated with inhaled medications through a …

Flavonoids have emerged as promising compounds capable of preventing colorectal cancer (CRC) due to their anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It is hypothesized that the metabolites of flavonoids are primarily responsible for the observed anti-cancer effects owing to the unstable nature of the parent compounds and their degradation by colonic microflora. In this study, we investigated the ability of one metabolite, 2,4,6-trihydroxybenzoic acid (2,4,6-THBA) to inhibit Cyclin Dependent Kinase (CDK) activity and cancer cell proliferation. Using in vitro kinase assays, we demonstrated that 2,4,6-THBA dose-dependently inhibited CDKs 1, 2 and 4 and in silico studies identified key amino acids involved in …
Prehospital Troponin Testing Protocol For Accelerated Diagnosis And Early Intervention In Chest Pain Patients, Ronald D. Meador
Prehospital Troponin Testing Protocol For Accelerated Diagnosis And Early Intervention In Chest Pain Patients, Ronald D. Meador
DNP Final Reports
Non-ST elevation acute coronary syndromes (NSTE-ACS) have significant morbidity and mortality rates despite the progress made in diagnosis and management and represent a significant public health burden in the United States. Lengthy diagnostic algorithms contribute to emergency department over-crowding, increased health care costs, and adverse patient outcomes. A troponin assay instituted earlier in the diagnostic pathway of patients with chest pain suspected of NSTE-ACS will reduce time to definitive diagnosis and medical intervention. This will improve patient outcomes, decrease emergency department crowding through improved ED workflow, and reduce the economic burden. The Star Model of Knowledge Transformation was used to …

The national burden of chronic liver disease is steadily increasing and is only expected to worsen with the ongoing obesity and opioid epidemics fueling growth in the prevalence of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and a resurgence of new hepatitis C infections. Our letter highlights the disparity between the rising prevalence of chronic liver disease and the proportion of medical students who receive exposure to patients with liver disease as part of their medical education. A more comprehensive survey of clerkship directors is needed to further corroborate this data, which may lead to reforms in medical school curricula to better address …

This article illustrates quality improvement (QI) methodology using an example intended to improve chlamydia screening in women. QI projects in healthcare provide great opportunities to improve patient quality and safety in a real-world healthcare setting, yet many academic centres lack training programmes on how to conduct QI projects. The choice of chlamydia screening was based on the significant health burden chlamydia poses despite simple ways to screen and treat. At the University of Michigan, we implemented a multidepartment process to improve the chlamydia screening rates using the plan-do-check-act model. Steps to guide QI projects include the following: (1) assemble a …

Stigma Mitigation Through Fine Arts, Kendall Owens
Stigma Mitigation Through Fine Arts, Kendall Owens
Honors Theses
Social stigma has plagued our society for centuries. It isolates groups of people based on erroneously defined characteristics causing stigmatized persons to be viewed as socially “abnormal”. This debarment from full social acceptance results in poor population health and well-being. Fine arts have been an integral component of society since the beginning of civilization; current and past research have found involvement in fine arts to improve health and well-being in many ways. In this project, relevant studies related to stigma, fine arts, and population health will be reviewed to support the argument that “fine arts combat and mitigate the …

Introduction: Accelerating progress in reducing child deaths is needed in order to achieve the Sustainable Development Goal child mortality target. This will require a focus on vulnerable children-including young children, those who are undernourished or with acute illnesses requiring hospitalization. Improving adherence to inpatient guidelines may be an important strategy to reduce child mortality, including among the most vulnerable. The aim of our assessment of nine sub-Saharan African and South Asian hospitals was to determine adherence to pediatric inpatient care recommendations, in addition to capacity for and barriers to implementation of guideline-adherent care prior to commencing the Childhood Acute Illness …

Alternative Methods Of Determining Hamstrings-To-Quadriceps Ratios: A Comprehensive Review, Cassio V. Ruas, Ronei S. Pinto, Gregory Haff, Camila D. Lima, Matheus D. Pinto, Lee E. Brown
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
The hamstrings-to-quadriceps muscle strength ratio calculated by peak torque has been used as an important tool to detect muscle imbalance, monitor knee joint stability, describe muscle strength properties and functionality, and for lower extremity injury prevention and rehabilitation. However, this ratio does not consider other neuromuscular variables that can also influence the antagonist to agonist muscle relationship, such as torque produced at multiple angles of range of motion, explosive strength, muscle size, muscle fatigue, or muscle activation. The aim of this study was to comprehensively review alternative methods of determining the hamstrings-to-quadriceps ratio. These include ratios calculated by angle-specific torque, …

Medical Education
Opening new residency programs in community hospitals is one strategy to address to address physician shortage. Previous reports have shown better mortality outcomes in university based hospitals. However, less is known about teaching community hospitals. Disrupting well-established workflows in community hospitals is feared to cause an increased cost and possibly a slide in quality of care. Our aim was to assess the impact of starting a new Internal Medicine residency program in a Graduate Medical Education (GME) naive community hospital.

Trauma and Acute Care Articles
Animal and human bites represent a significant health issue worldwide. However, penetrating neck trauma secondary to animal bites is a rare presentation. We present the case of a 32-year-old female with neck pain and difficulty breathing after suffering a dog bite to the neck. Bedside ultrasound and subsequent computed tomography (CT) showed findings consistent with subcutaneous emphysema. Due to rapidly progressing neck swelling and stridor, she required advanced airway management followed by emergent exploratory surgery. We present a case report on impending respiratory failure after a dog bite and review the management of penetrating neck trauma.

The Effect Of Sepsis On Cerebral Microvascular Blood Flow, Laura Mawdsley, Mamadou Diop, Chris G. Ellis
Western Research Forum
Background: Sepsis is a dysregulated host response to infection that affects 18 000 000 people worldwide, and over 325 000 000 dollars are spent treating sepsis in Canada every year. One of the symptoms of severe sepsis is an altered mental state, which is accompanied with a measured decrease in oxygen levels in the skeletal muscle microvasculature. It is hypothesized that his altered mental state is due to a lack of oxygenated blood reaching the brain.
Hypothesis: After the onset of sepsis, microvascular cerebral blood flow and oxygen levels in the blood will decrease. Onset of decreased blood flow in …

Background: Falls in people with a lower limb amputation (PLLAs) are common and most often occur while walking, resulting in physical and psychological consequences that adversely affect quality of life. Walking is a complex motor task requiring cognitive resources. Due to walking with a prosthesis, PLLAs report focussing on every step they take, indicating greater cognitive needs. However, cognitive resources are limited, and most of our everyday activities also involve the simultaneous performance of motor and cognitive tasks, known as dual-tasking. The inter-relationship between mobility, cognition and postural stability in PLLAs using a prosthesis is just starting to be understood. …
