Development Of Methods To Evaluate The Use Of Medi-551 To Target Cd19 Transmembrane Proteins On B-Cells To Improve Systemic Sclerosis, Natalia Dohman

Honors Thesis

Systemic sclerosis, a subcategory of scleroderma, is a rare autoimmune disease that affects the skin and, in some cases, the internal organs of those diagnosed with the disease. There is currently no cure for this disease, only treatments to slow its progression. It is important to note that each individual diagnosed with scleroderma experience differences in severity and symptoms of the disease and are treated based on their symptoms, not as a whole. Many factors of this disease still remain unknown, such as what causes the disease or stimulates the onset of it. Recent studies have helped determine different treatment …

Data Visualization Of Treatment Outcomes For Tuberculosis Patients, Joy Jenkins

Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Tuberculosis is an infectious disease, and different treatments have been discovered over the years. However, patients may develop various drug resistance levels that affect the likelihood of becoming cured or dying. In this study, we sought to employ data visualization to explore the relationship between treatment trajectory, as indicated by smear and culture results in the follow-up tests and patient outcomes. A large sample of patients have been broken down by demographics including age, gender, and drug resistance status. Sankey diagrams were used to visualize the pathway progression of the patients over time split between two time periods- months 0-6 …

Turf For Teams: Considering Both The Team And I In The Work-Centered Design Of Systems, Vickie Nguyen

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

Teams are an inherent part of many work domains, especially in the healthcare environment. Yet, most systems are often built with only the individual user in mind. How can we better incorporate the team, as a user, into the design of a system? By better understanding the team, through their user, task, representational, and functional needs, we can create more useful and helpful systems that match their work domain. For this research project, we utilize the TURF framework and expanded it further by also considering teams as a user, thus, creating the TURF for Teams framework. In addition, we chose …

Does Pediatric Palliative Care Involvement Influence Location Of Death?, Joy Solano, Meghna Singh, Ashley K. Sherman, Jennifer Linebarger

Posters

This study describes the influence of a palliative care team on location of death and location of death discussions with patients/caregivers, and determines whether location of death discussions influence location of death.

With palliative care or a location of death discussion, patients were less likely to die in the PICU and more likely to die at home. Location of death discussions were more likely to occur if a palliative care team was involved.

Investigating Virus Clearance Via Ph Inactivation During Biomanufacturing, Wenbo Xu

Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

In the processing of biopharmaceuticals, viral clearance and viral safety are important for the development of monoclonal antibodies. Murine xenotropic leukemia virus (XMuLV) is one of the retroviruses, recommended by Food and Drug Administration (FDA) as a model virus for viral clearance via inactivation from therapeutics derived from Chinese hamster ovary cells (CHO). A robust and effective method was investigated to clear or inactivate endogenous viruses by low pH inactivation. The effects of different conductivity and inactivated time on XMuLV clearance was determined. Acetate buffer was prepared with different conductivity, and 2% XMuLV was spiked into acetate buffer. XMuLV virus …

Pathology, East Africa

Purpose: Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is the most commonly diagnosed non-Hodgkin lymphoma in adults in Kenya. Cell of origin (COO) and double expression of MYC and BCL2 are two important prognostic factors for DLBCL. A small subset (5% to 10%) of DLBCL cases show positivity for CD5 and are associated with poor prognosis, whereas CD30 antigen, seen in up to 10% of cases, may be a useful target for therapy. We sought to determine the prevalence of MYC/BCL2 double expression, COO, and proportion of Epstein-Barr virus positivity among patients with DLBCL diagnosed at a tertiary referral laboratory in Kenya. …

Home Care Instruction For Eye Surgery – Using Health Literacy Best Practices, Jennifer Reynolds

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Background Information: Health literacy is a well-established best practice that nurses can use to provide home care instructions post hospital stay. It is an excellent place to start, especially given the intensity of care, complexity of medications and importance of patient adherence. Nurses provide extensive information in a condensed period of time about how to take acre at home. With the anxiety of surgery, potential side effects of anesthesia and the time limitations of an outpatient setting, there is greater risk for patients being unprepared when they leave our care. Patients report this as an overwhelming experience, sometimes with little …
