Chimeric antigen receptor T‐cell (CART) therapy is a new and promising cancer therapy. However, severe toxicity due to cytokine release syndrome (CRS) in CART‐treated patients highlighted the possible danger of this new therapy. Disease burden and CART doses are the potential factors associated with CRS but the detail relationships between these factors and the severity of the CRS remain largely unknown. In this study, the quantitative systems pharmacology (QSP) approach is used to quantify the complex relationships among CART doses, disease burden, and pro inflammatory cytokines in human subjects and to gain relevant insights into the determinant of clinical toxicity/efficacy …

Catheter-associated asymptomatic bacteriuria (CAABU) is frequent in intensive care units (ICUs) and contributes to the routine use of antibiotics and to antibiotic-resistant infections. While nurses are responsible for the implementation of CAABU-prevention guidelines, variability in how individual nurses contribute to CAABU-free rates in ICUs has not been previously explored. This study’s objective was to examine the variability in CAABU-free outcomes of individual ICU nurses. This observational cross-sectional study used shift-level nurse-patient data from the electronic health records from two ICUs in a tertiary medical center in the US between July 2015 and June 2016. We included all adult (18+) catheterized …

Effects Of Dental Composite Resin Monomers On Dental Pulp Cells, Thomas R. Schneider, Roxan Hakami-Tafreshi, Alexandra Tomasino-Perez, Lobat Tayebi, Doug Lobner
School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications
Methacrylate monomers found in many dental materials cause toxicity to dental pulp cells but the mechanism of the toxicity is poorly understood. We used cultured human dental pulp cells to test the effects of three commonly used monomers; bisphenol-A-glycidyl methacrylate (Bis-GMA), urethane dimethacrylate (UDMA), and triethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA). The order of toxicity was Bis-GMA>UDMA>TEGDMA. The toxicity correlated inversely with cystine uptake, with TEGDMA stimulating uptake and BisGMA and UDMA inhibiting uptake. Bis-GMA and UDMA induced oxidative stress, while TEGDMA did not. Toxicity correlated poorly with glutathione levels, as all compounds decreased cellular glutathione. TEGDMA is less toxic than …

Patterns Of Polysubstance Use Among Those With Tranquilizer Or Sedative Misuse: Predictors And Functional Consequences, Victoria R. Votaw
Psychology ETDs
The misuse of tranquilizer and sedative medications (i.e., use without a prescription or at higher doses/longer periods of time than prescribed) is associated with myriad negative sequalae, such as suicidal behaviors and increased risk of overdose. Yet, prescription tranquilizer and sedative misuse has been largely overlooked by the scientific community, clinicians, and policymakers. We addressed this gap in the literature by characterizing subgroups of individuals with tranquilizer or sedative misuse, based on their patterns of polysubstance use. The present study analyzed data from two samples of individuals with past-month tranquilizer or sedative misuse: respondents of a nationally-representative household survey (general …

Decreasing Caregiver Stress, Dexter Ramos
Decreasing Caregiver Stress, Dexter Ramos
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Stress is both critical and personal experience and has significant effects on caregivers’ physical, mental, and social well-being. The nature of caregiving and the responsibility to work and serve individuals at their illness conditions are very personal encounters that often result in adverse effects on the health and well-being of caregivers (Frederick, 2016). A decrease in stress experience can lead to the satisfaction of caregiver roles and improvement of patient’s quality of life (Choi, Jisun & Boyle, Diane, 2013; Yada, Nagata, & Inagaki, 2014). This scholarly project determined that evidence-based stress management interventions have decreased the perceived stress in caregivers. …
