Ossification Of The Cruciform Ligament Of Atlas; A Rare Cause Of Cervical Myelopathy: Case Report And Review Of Literature, Muhammad Waqas Saeed Baqai, Gohar Javed, Mirza Zain Baig
Section of Neurosurgery
We present a case of cervical myelopathy secondary to ossification of the cruciform ligament (also known as cruciate ligament). This is a rare phenomenon that, to the best of our knowledge, has only been reported 16 times previously in literature. We have added a review of literature after our case presentation. We hope that by doing so, we may aid clinicians reach early diagnosis so as to be able to better manage this rare disease.

Perianal Necrotizing Fasciitis With Retroperitoneal Extension: A Case Report From Pakistan, Mirza Zain Baig, Abeer Aziz, Umme E Hani Abdullah, Muhammad Salman Khalil, Sumiya Abbasi
Section of Neurosurgery
Necrotizing fasciitis is a rare but potentially fatal condition. It is defined as a rapidly spreading infection of the subcutaneous soft tissue. Extension into the retroperitoneum may further complicate this deadly condition. We report a case of a 45-year-old gentleman who presented to our institute with perianal necrotizing fasciitis with extension into the retroperitoneum. He was managed with antibiotics and prompt surgical debridement. Our patient had a positive outcome which may be due to the fact that we had a high clinical suspicion, on the basis of which we opted for early operative management rather than delaying definitive treatment by …

Department of Emergency Medicine
Disease processes that frequently require emergency care constitute approximately 50% of the total disease burden in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). Many LMICs continue to deal with emergencies caused by communicable disease states such as pneumonia, diarrhoea, malaria and meningitis, while also experiencing a marked increase in non-communicable diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus and trauma. For many of these states, emergency care interventions have been developed through research in high-income countries (HICs) and advances in care have been achieved. However, in LMICs, clinical research, especially interventional trials, in emergency care are rare. Furthermore, there exists minimal research on …

Background: Managing posterior glenoid wear and retroversion remains a challenge in shoulder arthroplasty. Correcting glenoid version through asymmetric reaming (AR) with placement of a standard glenoid component and the use of posteriorly augmented glenoid (PAG) components are two methods used to address this problem. Our objective is to report the radiographic outcomes of patients with posterior glenoid wear and/or retroversion treated with either approach.
Methods: Patients with posterior glenoid wear and a minimum of 15 degrees of retroversion, treated with AR and standard glenoid component or with a PAG component (3 mm, 5 mm, or 7 mm posterior augmentation), were …

What Parents Value Matters: Examining The Association Between Cultural Values, Parenting Styles/Practices, And Child Outcomes, Chen-Yun Wang
Theses and Dissertations
Researchers have identified significant relationships between parenting styles and child outcomes. However, these associations might vary in different cultures because parenting behaviors could link to cultural values. Additionally, understanding the cultural values of parents would help researchers better understand the reasons of parents’ behaviors. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between parental Asian values, parenting styles, parenting practices, and child outcomes. Parents of preschool-age children (N = 273) from Taiwan completed a series of parenting values and parenting behaviors questionnaires. Teachers rated child prosocial behaviors, modesty, sociability, and impulse control. Results revealed that some domains …

The world of molecular profiling has undergone revolutionary changes over the last few years as knowledge, technology, and even standard clinical practice have evolved. Broad molecular profiling is now nearly essential for all patients with metastatic solid tumors. New agents have been approved based on molecular testing instead of tumor site of origin. Molecular profiling methodologies have likewise changed such that tests that were performed on patients a few years ago are no longer complete and possibly inaccurate today. As with all rapid change, medical providers can quickly fall behind or struggle to find up-to-date sources to ensure he or …

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications
Purpose: Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) aim to provide access to augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices via brain activity alone. However, while BCI technology is expanding in the laboratory setting, there is minimal incorporation into clinical practice. Building upon established AAC research and clinical best practices may aid the clinical translation of BCI practice, allowing advancements in both fields to be fully leveraged.
Method: A multidisciplinary team developed considerations for how BCI products, practice, and policy may build upon existing AAC research, based upon published reports of existing AAC and BCI procedures.
Outcomes/Benefits: Within each consideration, a review of BCI research …

Female High School Athlete's Confidence About Their Future In College Athletics, Adam Potter
Master's Theses & Capstone Projects
Female athletes may begin at an early age in a sport and find success, but in many cases, there is a disconnect somewhere before entering college where females feel less confident and discontinue their athletic career before college. Some studies have looked at female athletes and their confidence level, however, there is more research that needs to be done to determine if females feel confident that they have the same opportunities available in college as their male counterparts. This study was designed to explore female athletes’ confidence level for their future in college sports. Data was gathered from female athletes …

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)
This poster presents a patient case and information about the believed disease process, hepatitis B (HBV). The poster gives information on the signs and symptoms of HBV such as fatigue, jaundice, and abdominal pain. The poster also discusses the pathophysiology of HBV. The virus attacks the healthy cells of the liver, replacing healthy cells with those infected cells to reproduce, and form more infected cells. This is significant because knowing how the virus works helps to know how to treat the virus and keep it from causing permanent damage. This poster also discusses the nursing implications that come from the …

Development Of A Prolyl Endopeptidase Expression System In Lactobacillus Reuteri To Reduce The Clinical Manifestation Of Celiac Disease, Kara Lynn Jew
Master's Theses
Celiac Disease (CD) is an autoimmune disorder that emerges due to the ingestion of gluten, a protein found in a variety of common grains such as wheat, rye, and barley. Approximately 1 in 100 individuals in the US suffer from CD, making it the most commonly diagnosed gastrointestinal disorder (Ciclitira et. al., 2005). These proline-rich gluten peptides are resistant to proteolysis and accumulate in the duodenum of the small intestine. Once in the duodenum, these peptides illicit an autoimmune response resulting in villous atrophy. Current treatment for CD requires a rigorous adherence to a gluten-free diet. Nevertheless, gluten-containing grains are …

Thermal reaction norms pervade organismal traits as stereotyped responses to temperature, a fundamental environmental input into sensory and physiological systems. Locomotory behavior represents an especially plastic read-out of animal response, with its dynamic dependence on environmental stimuli presenting a challenge for analysis and for understanding the genomic architecture of heritable variation. Here we characterize behavioral reaction norms as thermal performance curves for the nematode Caenorhabditis briggsae, using a collection of 23 wild isolate genotypes and 153 recombinant inbred lines to quantify the extent of genetic and plastic variation in locomotory behavior to temperature changes. By reducing the dimensionality of the …
