Understanding The Neural Bases Of Implicit And Statistical Learning, Laura J. Batterink, Ken A. Paller, Paul J. Reber Jul 2019

Understanding The Neural Bases Of Implicit And Statistical Learning, Laura J. Batterink, Ken A. Paller, Paul J. Reber

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

© 2019 Cognitive Science Society, Inc. Both implicit learning and statistical learning focus on the ability of learners to pick up on patterns in the environment. It has been suggested that these two lines of research may be combined into a single construct of “implicit statistical learning.” However, by comparing the neural processes that give rise to implicit versus statistical learning, we may determine the extent to which these two learning paradigms do indeed describe the same core mechanisms. In this review, we describe current knowledge about neural mechanisms underlying both implicit learning and statistical learning, highlighting converging findings between …

Macaque Anterior Cingulate Cortex Deactivation Impairs Performance And Alters Lateral Prefrontal Oscillatory Activities In A Rule-Switching Task, Liya Ma, Jason L. Chan, Kevin Johnston, Stephen G. Lomber, Stefan Everling

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

© 2019 Ma et al. In primates, both the dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) and the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) are key regions of the frontoparietal cognitive control network. To study the role of the dACC and its communication with the dlPFC in cognitive control, we recorded local field potentials (LFPs) from the dlPFC before and during the reversible deactivation of the dACC, in macaque monkeys engaging in uncued switches between 2 stimulus-response rules, namely prosaccade and antisaccade. Cryogenic dACC deactivation impaired response accuracy during maintenance of—but not the initial switching to—the cognitively demanding antisaccade rule, which coincided with a …

Validity Of The Short Recovery And Stress Scale In Collegiate Weightlifters, Spencer Kyle Travis, Alec Perkins, Satoshi Mizuguchi, Kevin Breuel, Michael H. Stone, Caleb D. Bazyler

ETSU Faculty Works

Introduction: Monitoring an athlete’s stress and recovery state across sequential training bouts can be used to gauge fitness and fatigue levels (i.e., preparedness). Previous studies have used jumping performance, biochemical markers, and questionnaires to estimate preparedness. However, self-report questionnaires are the most common due to economical and practical means. The Short Recovery and Stress Scale (SRSS) is an 8-item questionnaire ideal for monitoring; however, convergent validity of the SRSS with physiological and performance measures needs to be investigated. Purpose: Thus, the purpose of this study was to determine whether changes in collegiate weightlifter’s training volume-load, biochemical markers, and jumping performance …

Automatic Feature Discrimination Of Non-Nutritive Suck Dynamics Among Extremely Preterm Infants., Mckenzie Ann Ochoa Jul 2019

Automatic Feature Discrimination Of Non-Nutritive Suck Dynamics Among Extremely Preterm Infants., Mckenzie Ann Ochoa

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Prematurity is the leading cause of death in the first month of life. Neonates are forced to engage the extrauterine environment with an underdeveloped nervous systems, with limited connectivity between orofacial sensorimotor anatomy, brainstem pattern-generating circuits, and sensory-driven thalamocortical inputs to layer IV of the neocortex. This is correlated with an inability to produce the complex neuromotor behaviors of oral feeding. The NTrainer System is an assessment and treatment tool that promotes ororhythmic motor patterning in preterm infants though pulsed orocutaneous stimulation to improve NNS.

This report represents an interim analysis of NNS development among 42 extremely preterm infants enrolled …

Co-Crystal Structure Of The Fusobacterium Ulcerans Ztp Riboswitch Using An X-Ray Free-Electron Laser., Christopher Jones, Brandon Tran, Chelsie Conrad, Jason Stagno, Robert Trachman, Pontus Fischer, Alke Meents, Adrian Ferré-D'Amaré

School of Medicine and Health Sciences Student Works

Riboswitches are conformationally dynamic RNAs that regulate gene expression by binding specific small molecules. ZTP riboswitches bind the purine-biosynthetic intermediate 5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide riboside 5'-monophosphate (ZMP) and its triphosphorylated form (ZTP). Ligand binding to this riboswitch ultimately upregulates genes involved in folate and purine metabolism. Using an X-ray free-electron laser (XFEL), the room-temperature structure of the Fusobacterium ulcerans ZTP riboswitch bound to ZMP has now been determined at 4.1 Å resolution. This model, which was refined against a data set from ∼750 diffraction images (each from a single crystal), was found to be consistent with that previously obtained from data collected at …

The Impact Of Technology On Fine Motor Development In Children, Erin Taylor Jul 2019

The Impact Of Technology On Fine Motor Development In Children, Erin Taylor

MOT Student Capstones

Fine motor skills involve the coordination and refinement of small muscles that control the hand, fingers, and thumb. Children need to develop these skills along with dexterity and strength in order to complete important tasks including writing, self-feeding, getting dressed, and playing. With the abundance of technology and touchscreen devices available, there is evidence that children are spending more than the recommended time using a device and engaging in screen time. While there is evidence that the use of technology in children has increased, there is little research on the possible impact of this increased use on the development of …

Ion Gresser 1928-2019, Jan Vilcek, Howard A. Young

United States Public Health Resources

Ion Gresser, a virologist who transformed understanding of the roles of interferons, may be best remembered for showing that in mice, interferon-α (IFN-α) can produce acute and chronic disease. At the time Gresser began these studies, interferon was considered to be a selective antiviral substance, harmless to uninfected cells and organisms, and there was no indication that cytokines would play a role in pathogenesis. That belief was shattered with the 1975 Nature publication with the simple title “Lethality of interferon preparations for newborn mice.” Gresser subsequently demonstrated that antibodies to IFN-α can protect young mice from death caused by infection …
