Lived Experiences With Social Networking Technology To Improve Physical Activity, Paula Nobles Eubanks
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Research suggests that Black women living in the United States are not engaging in sufficient physical activity, which is a major factor negatively impacting their health outcomes. Black Girls Run (BGR) is a targeted national health movement using the capacity of social networking technology as a tool to interact with and inspire Black women to live healthy through running. Literature lacked the voice and perspective of Black women who were embracing the innovation of technology to positively improve their health behaviors. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to gain a better understanding of the composite experiences of women …
Beliefs And Opinions Of Low-Income Residents Living In A Food Desert In A Gulf Coast State, Kimberly Lakeidra Willis
Beliefs And Opinions Of Low-Income Residents Living In A Food Desert In A Gulf Coast State, Kimberly Lakeidra Willis
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
This study was an investigation of the access problem to fresh and affordable fruits and vegetables and how limited access influenced the beliefs and opinions of residents of a food desert as designated by United States Department of Agriculture. Many researchers have documented that price, availability, and transportation are barriers to fruit and vegetable consumption, particularly among low-income individuals. Researchers in other studies have concluded that these barriers are further exacerbated by an individual's distance from a supermarket or grocery store. However, much less information is available regarding the beliefs and opinions about life in a food desert and how …

Comparison Of Army Veterans' And Nonveterans' Individual Work Performance, Petrina Veola Stack
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Business managers lack knowledge and understanding of the transferability of Army veterans' individual work performance (IWP) in the private sector, which results in organizations' failure to hire Army veterans who possess strong IWPs. The purpose of this nonexperimental, cross-sectional study was to compare Army veterans' and nonveterans' transferable IWP as defined by task performance (TP), contextual performance (CP), and counter-productive work behavior (CWB). The IWP framework provided the theoretical foundation for this study. The research question examined how veterans' IWPs compared to those of nonveterans. The sample frame included U.S. Army civilian veterans and nonveterans at a large military installation …
Predictors Of Admission For Stroke Or Transient Ischemic Attack Patients, Jessica Janice Tucker
Predictors Of Admission For Stroke Or Transient Ischemic Attack Patients, Jessica Janice Tucker
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Approximately 11% of patients diagnosed with a stroke or a transient ischemic attack are readmitted to the hospital, creating a cost burden of nearly $2 billion per year for Medicare beneficiaries. Because researchers and policy makers consider hospital readmission for patients with strokes or transient ischemic attack to be an indicator for the delivery of quality care, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has imposed financial penalties of up to 3% of a hospital's Medicare reimbursement in 1 year for excessive readmissions, potentially impacting the financial sustainability of various healthcare organizations. The ecological systems theory allows for the understanding …

Parental Perception Of Physician Cultural Sensitivity And Adherence To Asthma Treatment, Narue Jaynelle Wright-Jegede
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
In the United States, asthma remains a major cause of frequent urgent care visits, hospitalizations, and preventable deaths among children. Nationwide, the chronic disease continues to fall disproportionately on minorities, mostly residing in urban localities. When a child is diagnosed with asthma, the parents are typically tasked with managing the child's condition. Establishing a collaborative partnership between parents and their child's primary physician is significant for improving asthma self-management among youth. Using the theory of reasoned action as a theoretical framework, this mixed-methods study examined whether a relationship exists between parental perceptions of physician cultural sensitivity and parental care in …

Background: The rise of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA) is a global health concern. Paucity of data on MRSA carriage prevalence and diagnostic methods in resource-limited settings hampers efforts to define the problem and plan an appropriate response. Additionally, high variability in cost and logistical characteristics of MRSA screening methods may impede infection control efforts. We compared the performance of locally-available chromogenic agar BD CHROMagar MRSA II and two PCR-based assays (Hain GenoQuick MRSA and Cepheid Xpert SA Complete) for the detection of asymptomatic MRSA carriage in nasal swabs.
Results: During 2015, we enrolled 500 patients from five hospital …

Comparative Optic Nerve Head Physiology: Glaucoma Induced Retinal Ganglion Cell Apoptosis By Disruption Of The Translaminar Pressure Gradient And Reduced Neurotrophic Signaling, Cassidy Christopherson
Biology and Microbiology Graduate Students Plan B Research Projects
Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness, and the second leading vision loss neurodegenerative disease affecting millions worldwide. Glaucoma is characterized as a group of eye disorders which are initially asymptomatic but may progress to significant optic nerve head damage and vision loss with time. Early stages of glaucoma often go undetected, leading to irreversible damage to the optic nerve head prior to patients seeking medical care. Glaucoma leads to vision loss via death of retinal ganglion cells. Retinal ganglion cell apoptosis is thought to begin due to interference with the normal transmission of neurotrophic signals that arrive by …

Pulmonary Vein Thrombosis Secondary To Tuberculosis In A Non-Hiv Infected Patient, Yonas Raru, Jason Ballengee, Mahmoud Abouzid, Samson Teka
Pulmonary Vein Thrombosis Secondary To Tuberculosis In A Non-Hiv Infected Patient, Yonas Raru, Jason Ballengee, Mahmoud Abouzid, Samson Teka
Pulmonology
Tuberculosis has been suggested as an independent risk factor for thromboembolism due to a hypercoagulable state induced by changes in clotting factors, protein C and vascular endothelium. Pulmonary vein thrombosis (PVT) is a rare, potentially serious and life-threatening condition that can be caused by tuberculosis. Its rare occurrence is due to a rich network of venous collateral vessels that drain the lung. PVT can also occur following lobectomy for malignancy, lung transplantation, radiofrequency catheter ablation for atrial fibrillation, sclerosing mediastinitis and following metastatic cancer, such as liposarcoma. Pulmonary vein thrombosis is difficult to diagnose clinically and requires a combination of …

Rasburicase Induced Severe Hemolysis And Methemoglobinemia In A Caucasian Patient Complicated By Acute Renal Failure And Ards, Yonas Raru, Mahmoud Abouzid, Julia Parsons, Fuad Zeid
Pulmonology
Rasburicase is a recombinant urate-oxidase enzyme and is a very important medication for tumor lysis syndrome. Methemoglobinemia and hemolysis are known side effects of rasburicase that result from oxidative stress caused by hydrogen peroxide, a byproduct generated during the breakdown of uric acid to allantoin. Patients with G6PD deficiency have a decreased tolerance to oxidative stress and are therefore at a greater risk of hemolysis and methemoglobinemia with rasburicase. Our patient is a 56-year-old Caucasian male with a recent diagnosis of grade 2-3a non-Hodgkin's lymphoma who presented to our emergency department with shortness of breath and dark discoloration of urine. …

Choosing A Second-Generation Antidepressant Using Demographic Characteristics And Clinical Symptoms Of Depression, Amanda Lin
Master of Public Health Program Student Publications
Depression is the sixth most costly health condition in the United States, and depression that does not respond to its first trial of antidepressant treatment adds an annual cost of $9,529 per person per year. Thus, choosing an effective starting antidepressant can decrease the overall cost of depression to society. A secondary analysis of data from the Collaborative Psychiatric Epidemiology Survey (CPES) was performed to create models that can predict the efficacy of second-generation antidepressants in treating sadness. Two sets of Principal Component Analyses (PCAs) and logistic regressions were performed on variables associated with patient demographics, clinical symptoms, past medical …
