The exponential growth of culturally diverse populations in the United States has led to a multicultural patient population while the nursing workforce remains predominantly White. At the project site, managers identified that staff nurses struggled to deliver culturally competent care. The purpose of this project was to improve the cultural competence of registered nurses (RNs) through a transcultural nursing education program. Leininger's transcultural nursing theory guided the project. Sources of evidence used to develop a face-to-face educational program included peer-reviewed journals, credible websites, and the Inventory for Assessing the Process of Cultural Competence Among Healthcare Professionals-R tool. Bovine Cellular And Innate Immune Response To Hemostatic Polysaccharides, Brian Kobylkevich Jan 2019

Bovine Cellular And Innate Immune Response To Hemostatic Polysaccharides, Brian Kobylkevich

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Chronic wounds are longstanding dermal wounds that do not heal in a normal amount of time and can commonly last for over a year. These wounds plague humans and farm animals alike. Wounds are characterized by chronic inflammation and are often painful, difficult to heal, have a high recurrence rate, and are potentially debilitating. Long term wounds that do not fully heal are distressing for both humans and animals, but understandably more resources have been directed towards humans. Some treatment options for humans may be suitable for adaptation into the field of animal care. Chronic lesions such as bovine digital …

Impact Of The Prophecy Job Fit Predictor On New Graduate Nurse Satisfaction, Joi Alesha Johnson Jan 2019

Impact Of The Prophecy Job Fit Predictor On New Graduate Nurse Satisfaction, Joi Alesha Johnson

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Research has shown that job satisfaction influences retention of nurses, and policies focused on nursing satisfaction are more beneficial for retaining new nurses than adjusting work hours and wages. The prophecy job fit predictor is a quality improvement initiative designed to identify where a nurse should be assigned based on behavior, clinical capabilities, and personality assessment. The practice-focused question for this project focused on whether satisfaction rates of recently graduated registered nurses were influenced by their unit placement. The conceptual frameworks that guided this project were the plan, do, study, and act method and Herzberg's 2-factor theory. Data were obtained …

Localized Transdermal Delivery Of Chemopreventive Agents To The Breast, Abdulsalam Alqahtani Jan 2019

Localized Transdermal Delivery Of Chemopreventive Agents To The Breast, Abdulsalam Alqahtani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in women. About 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. The current systemic approaches are associated with significant side effects including some life-threatening toxicity, leading to poor patient compliance. To overcome this limitation, localized transdermal drug delivery system was investigated in the current study. In addition, majority of breast cancers originate from the ducts and lobules in the breast. Therefore, localized transdermal drug delivery system can maximize drug concentration in the breast and minimize systemic adverse effects, resulting in a potential approach for preventing and/or treating …

The Social Security Administration (SSA) offers a set of work incentives for Supplemental Security income (SSI) beneficiaries. Work incentive employment supports help SSI recipients go to work by minimizing the risk of losing their SSI or Medicaid benefits (Social Security Administration, 2018). One such incentive, the Plan to Achieve Self-Support (PASS), allows approved individuals to set aside earned or unearned income and resources to achieve an employment goal. The money or resources set aside are excluded from SSI income and resource tests and can be used to pay for goods or services needed to reach the goal, such as education, …

ThinkWork! Publications

At the beginning of the transformation process, Penn-Mar recognized the importance of robust strategic planning to understand what the organization needed to do differently to transform. Therefore, Penn-Mar created the 2020 Strategic Plan, a 5-year plan to help focus the organization, and to strategize about how to achieve their objectives. The 2020 Strategic Plan outlines Penn-Mar’s goal to close its sheltered workshop, with a set of action steps for achievement. The plan set a specific date for closure, as Penn-Mar staff argued that without it, the transformation process would “linger forever.” Penn-Mar established a task force to support the development …

Leadership at Work Inc., a provider in the Boston area, thought about the holistic approach to providing individual supports even before their agency’s transformation began. Work Inc. designed its community liaisons program to have three components: volunteerism, with the intention of identifying employment opportunities and contributing to the community; recreation, “because everyone wants to have fun”; and instruction, with a focus on skill-building and identifying interests and talents. In designing and implementing the program, Work Inc. staff considered each person’s interests, and turned former workshop staff into “community liaisons.”

Prefrontal-Accumbens Opioid Plasticity: Implications For Relapse And Dependence, Matthew C. Hearing Jan 2019

Prefrontal-Accumbens Opioid Plasticity: Implications For Relapse And Dependence, Matthew C. Hearing

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

In addiction, an individual’s ability to inhibit drug seeking and drug taking is thought to reflect a pathological strengthening of drug-seeking behaviors or impairments in the capacity to control maladaptive behavior. These processes are not mutually exclusive and reflect drug-induced modifications within prefrontal cortical and nucleus accumbens circuits, however unlike psychostimulants such as cocaine, far less is known about the temporal, anatomical, and cellular dynamics of these changes. We discuss what is known regarding opioid-induced adaptations in intrinsic membrane physiology and pre-/postsynaptic neurotransmission in principle pyramidal and medium spiny neurons in the medial prefrontal cortex and nucleus accumbens from electrophysiological …

Pertussis is a human respiratory disease, primarily caused by the Gram-negative pathogen Bordetella pertussis. The infection is most severe and can be life-threatening in young children and infants where it manifests as a series of paroxysmal coughs. The disease is more commonly known as whooping cough, due to the whoop omitted during a massive inspiratory effort to bring air back into the lungs. Pertussis is a toxin-mediated disease that persists due to an early release of toxins that allow that bacteria to evade the cells of the innate immune response. The inhibition of the host response continues as toxin activity …

Role Of Sox9 In Cancer Stem Cell Regulation In Lung Cancer Chemoresistance And Particle-Induced Carcinogenesis, Maria Voronkova

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide. Every year it claims more lives than other common malignancies, breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers, combined. And despite recent improvements in disease diagnostics and treatment, drug resistance and tumor relapse remain major contributors to low patient survival. Both issues have been largely attributed to the existence of cancer stem-like cells (CSCs) or tumor initiating cells (TICs). CSCs are a small cell population within heterogeneous tumors that is inherently resistant to apoptosis, chemo- and radiation therapy. Thus, it is critical to elucidate CSC-specific signaling pathways and identify early biomarkers for therapeutic …
