Microfluidic Synthesis Of Plga/Carbon Quantum Dot Microspheres For Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor Delivery, Meisam Omidi, Mohadeseh Hashemi, Lobat Tayebi
School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications
In this study, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) loaded poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) – carbon quantum dot microspheres were produced using microfluidic platforms. The microcapsules were fabricated in flow-focusing geometry with a biphasic flow to generate solid/oil/water (s–o–w) droplets. To avoid any damage to protein functional and structural stability during the encapsulation process, the VEGF was PEGylated. The produced microspheres were intact and highly monodisperse in size (CV < 5%). Furthermore, microspheres in a size range of 16–36 µm were achieved by adjusting the flow ratio parameter. The encapsulation efficiency, release profile, and bioactivity of the produced microparticles were also studied. The loading efficiency of PEGylated VEGF in the microparticles was varied from 51–69% and more than 90% of PEGylated VEGF was released within 28 days. Furthermore, the release of VEGF was indirectly monitored by carbon quantum dots. The present monodisperse and controllable VEGF loaded microspheres with reproducible manner could be widely used in tissue engineering and therapeutic applications.
Jurisliterature And Transgression, Peter Goodrich
Jurisliterature And Transgression, Peter Goodrich

The jurisliterary profession is the curious enterprise of writing, as a jurist, about law. Many seek to escape into literature, philosophy, critique, psychoanalysis, the couch, but then, in the main, they have abandoned law. Those that persist, who remain jurists, have the propensity to transgress the boundaries of the juridical, the strictures of abstraction and disembodiment, so as to generate accounts of legal sensibility, so as to manifest the polyglottal and visceral potential of transforming the juridical bubble into that most ethical of realms, the poetics of desire. Jurisliterary transgression, at its strongest, returns the materiality of imagination to the …

Neuroscience Articles
BACKGROUND: Previous real-world comparative research of MS disease modifying therapies (DMTs) in the overall population has suggested dimethyl fumarate (DMF) to be comparable to fingolimod (FTY) and more efficacious than teriflunomide (TERI) in reducing relapses. However, there is limited comparative evidence in patients switching from platform DMTs in the US. The objective of the study was to compare the annualized relapse rate (ARR) and risk of relapse in MS patients who have switched from a platform therapy to DMF, FTY, or TERI.
METHODS: MS patients (18-65 years old) initiating an oral DMT from June 2013 to March 2015 were identified …
Contextual Interference In Speech Motor Learning Secondary To Similar Phonemes, Katelyn M. Bond
Contextual Interference In Speech Motor Learning Secondary To Similar Phonemes, Katelyn M. Bond
Capstones and Honors Theses
Purpose: The contextual interference (CI) effect is a motor learning phenomenon where learners experience difficulty during training resulting in poor performance; however, improved performance is observed in transfer conditions. Different variables elicit a CI effect, and the purpose of this study is to investigate whether phoneme (or sound) similarity may result in a CI effect during speech motor learning.
Method: The study included twenty-nine participants whose hearing and speech abilities were within the normal range. Participants were randomly assigned to one of two training sessions involving nonwords with either similar or dissimilar phonemes. Each training session included nonword repetition training …
An Application Of The Two-Stage Model Of Motor Learning To Speech Motor Control, Jacob W. Cahn
An Application Of The Two-Stage Model Of Motor Learning To Speech Motor Control, Jacob W. Cahn
Capstones and Honors Theses
Purpose: This study used a two-stage model of motor learning (Latash, 2012) to evaluate bad and good variance during a speech learning task. Stage 1 learning involves minimizing bad variance, or overall error, whereas Stage 2 learning involves changes in good variance while ceiling accuracy is maintained. Using two different variables to evaluate speech complexity (manner of articulation and syllable length), two hypotheses were evaluated: 1) A two-stage model exists during speech motor learning and 2) complexity of stimuli will alter the achievement and maintenance of each stage during learning.
Methods: Twelve native English speakers with normal speech and hearing …

Comparison Of Quantitative Analysis To Qualitative Analysis For Interpretation Of Lower‑Limb Lymphoscintigraphy, Edward Nganga, Khalid Makhdomi
Imaging & Diagnostic Radiology, East Africa
Qualitative analysis of lymphoscintigrams is subject to wide variability and may miss subtle differences in ilioinguinal uptake between normal and abnormal limbs. This study compared quantitative analysis to qualitative analysis of lower‑limb lymphoscintigraphy in diagnosing lymphedema. Fifty‑two lymphoscintigrams performed using standardized protocol, 99‑metastable technetium nanocolloid intradermal injection at the first interdigital space, were analyzed quantitatively. Fifty‑three normal and 51 abnormal limbs were analyzed. For each limb, a region of interest (ROI) was drawn around the injection site, and ilioinguinal nodes on the 1.5 h static images and the counts in these ROIs were recorded. Percentage ilioinguinal nodes uptake was then …

How Do Teachers Use Comics To Promote Engagement, Equity, And Diversity In Science Classrooms?, Camilla Matuk, Talia Hurwich, Amy Spiegel, Judy Diamond
World of Viruses
Equitable learning opportunities are critical to the goals of science education. However, major curriculum standards are vague on how to achieve equity goals, and educators must often develop their own resources and strategies to achieve equity goals. This study examines how educators used a comic book series designed to interest youth in virology as a way to make science more broadly appealing to their diverse students. We begin with the notion of Pedagogical Design Capacity, which describes a dynamic relationship between teachers and their tools and the ability for teachers to perceive and leverage affordances of artifacts as tools in …

Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (Map) is the etiologic agent of Johne’s disease in ruminants and has been associated with Crohn’s disease in humans. An effective control of Map by either vaccines or chemoprophylaxis is a paramount need for veterinary and possibly human medicine. Given the importance of fatty acids in the biosynthesis of mycolic acids and the mycobacterial cell wall, we tested novel amphiphilic C10 and C18 cyclobutene and cyclobutane fatty acid derivatives for Map inhibition. Microdilution minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) with 5 or 7 week endpoints were measured in Middlebrook 7H9 base broth media. We compared the …

Right-sided congestive heart failure (brisket disease) commonly occurs in cattle raised at elevations >2,500– 3,500 m. We investigated clinical cases resembling brisket disease at a western Nebraska feedyard at a moderate altitude (1,369 m). Over a 15-mo period (2009–2010), we examined 17 cases (16 steers and 1 heifer), all purebred Angus. All animals had clinical right-sided heart failure: brisket and ventral abdominal edema, and severe chronic passive congestion of the liver. Gross examination confirmed right ventricular hypertrophy (left ventricle plus septum: right ventricle weight ratio mean: 1.33 vs. 2.8–4.0 reference interval). Microscopically, all 17 cases had interstitial fibrosis (mean score: …

Innate CD8 + T cells express a memory-like phenotype and demonstrate a strong cytotoxic capacity that is critical during the early phase of the host response to certain bacterial and viral infections. These cells arise in the thymus and depend on IL-4 and IL-15 for their development. Even though innate CD8 + T cells exist in the thymus of WT mice in low numbers, they are highly enriched in KO mice that lack certain kinases, leading to an increase in IL-4 production by thymic NKT cells. Our work describes that in C57BL/6 WT mice undergoing a Th1 biased infectious disease, …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Cyanotis. vaga (Lour.) Schult, & Schult. f. (C. vaga) previously called Tradescantia vaga and Cyanotis barbata, is a perennial herb. It is native to Eastern Asia and Tropical Africa. It has been reported that its decoction reduces fever and enhances well-being. Recently, C. vaga has been used widely for its anabolic effects, due to its richness of ecdysteroids. Even though C. vaga is a commedicinal plant (dietary supplement), there are no reports about its effect on the drug metabolizing enzyme Cytochromes P450 to predict its interaction with concomitantly used medications. In this study, eight ecdysteroids were isolated …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
ABSTRACT After the validation of our in silico models by using the previous knowledge in this area the alerting phytochemicals from two Glycyrrhiza species (G. glabra and G. uralensis) were clustered. Exhaustive computational mining of licorice metabolome against selected endocrinal and metabolic targets led to the discovery of a unique class of compounds which belong to the dihydrostilbenoids (DHS) class appended with prenyl groups at various positions. To the best of our knowledge this interesting group of compounds has not been studied for their estrogenic activities or PXR activation. In addition some of the bis-prenylated DHS have been reported to …

The development of a facility for irradiation of murice and primate tissue presents several challenges. First, extremely low fluences (10⁶-10¹¹ ions cm⁻²) are required to deliver doses of 1 mGy - 50 Gy using MeV proton. Second, the tissues, particularly from non-human primate, may be infectious to humans. Third, protection of irradiated tissue samples from contamination by mold and bacteria is critical. Here we present an ultra-low flux irradiation facility and associated fluence control for biological cell and tissue irradiation under sterile biosafety level 2 (BSL-2) conditions suitable for use with low energy (1-3.4 MeV) protons. The operation is demonstrated using …

Predictive Relationship Between Socio-Demographics, Medication, And Treatment Completion Among Persons Experiencing Homelessness Treated For Tuberculosis, Sophia Ajoku
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Approximately 80% of people who contract tuberculosis (TB) in the United States are first infected with untreated latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). LTBI is an ongoing public health concern in people who experience homelessness. Because of the transient nature of this population, it is often difficult for them to adhere to and complete treatment for LTBI. In this quantitative, correlational of a cross-sectional study, secondary data was from a public health clinic in southern U.S. The theoretical framework used for the study was the social ecological framework. Multiple logistic regression was used to determine if a statistically significant predictive relationship existed …
Improving Care For Transgender Veterans Through Staff Education, Stephanie C. Henrickson
Improving Care For Transgender Veterans Through Staff Education, Stephanie C. Henrickson
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The VHA Directive 1341 (2018a): Providing Health Care for Transgender and Intersex Veterans, outlines care for transgender patients. Staff members at the project site lacked knowledge of the directive and available resources, making their care of transgender veterans inefficient. The purpose of the project was to implement staff education about the directive and resources to increase transgender patient visits and access to care. The practice-focused question asked whether the development and implementation of staff education about the national directive and transgender services would affect the number of transgender patient visits in a 2-month period. The Iowa and Community Readiness Models …
Exploring Healthcare Transitions And Health Equity: An Integrative Review, Susan Ann Jordan
Exploring Healthcare Transitions And Health Equity: An Integrative Review, Susan Ann Jordan
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Compared to their typically developing peers, adolescents, and emerging adults with special healthcare needs (AEA-SHCN) disproportionately experience healthcare transition (HCT) disparities and poor access to adult care. Theoretical models that describe how access gaps develop and strategies to address unmet HCT needs are not well understood. While HCT researchers describe both system and patient healthcare barriers, a comprehensive approach that discovers how these factors interact and interfere remains misunderstood. An integrative review (IR) was conducted to understand the multiplicity of these factors. An intersectional theory (IT) provided further clarity on how key findings influence patient HCT experiences. Several themes were …
Staff Education On Metabolic Syndrome In Patients Taking Antipsychotic Medications, Juliana Ifeoma Omile
Staff Education On Metabolic Syndrome In Patients Taking Antipsychotic Medications, Juliana Ifeoma Omile
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) are prescribed for treatment of psychosis. A major side effect of SGAs is an increased risk of metabolic syndrome (MetS) with symptoms of hypertension, hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia, and truncal obesity. A clinic in the northeastern United States was not screening patients for MetS when being treated with SGAs. The purpose of this project was to educate staff on MetS risk factors, signs, symptoms, and patient management with a goal to improve their knowledge of MetS. Lewin's change theory provided a conceptual framework for the project. The project question explored the development and evaluation of an educational module on …

Diagnosis And Rehabilitation Of Multiple Hip Pathologies In A Division I Football Player: A Case Study, Kelsey E. Sanders
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Objective: To present a diagnosis and rehabilitation plan for femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), labral tear, and sports hernia in a Division I college football player. Background: A 21-year-old NCAA Division I college football player experienced a rare combination diagnosis of hip FAI, labral tear and sports hernia. Overlapping signs and symptoms proved difficult to conclude a diagnosis. The patient underwent three months of conservative treatment with no relief before electing to undergo surgery. Differential Diagnosis: Hip flexor strain, osteitis pubis. Treatment: A combination of conservative treatment such as activity modification, anti-inflammatories, therapeutic modalities, injections, and rehabilitation were unsuccessful in relieving symptoms …
Implementation Of A Transcultural Nursing Education Program To Improve Nurses' Cultural Competence, Ann Marie Elizabeth Edwards
Implementation Of A Transcultural Nursing Education Program To Improve Nurses' Cultural Competence, Ann Marie Elizabeth Edwards
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The exponential growth of culturally diverse populations in the United States has led to a multicultural patient population while the nursing workforce remains predominantly White. At the project site, managers identified that staff nurses struggled to deliver culturally competent care. The purpose of this project was to improve the cultural competence of registered nurses (RNs) through a transcultural nursing education program. Leininger's transcultural nursing theory guided the project. Sources of evidence used to develop a face-to-face educational program included peer-reviewed journals, credible websites, and the Inventory for Assessing the Process of Cultural Competence Among Healthcare Professionals-R tool. Aggregate pretest and …
