Effect Of Chronic Intermittent Hypoxia On Angiotensin Ii Receptors In The Central Nervous System., Barbara J Morgan, Nicole Schrimpf, Morgan Rothman, Ann Mitzey, Mark S Brownfield, Robert Charles Speth, John M Dopp

Faculty Articles

Chronic intermittent hypoxia (CIH) increases basal sympathetic nervous system activity, augments chemoreflex-induced sympathoexcitation, and raises blood pressure. All effects are attenuated by systemic or intracerebroventricular administration of angiotensin II type 1 receptor (AT1R) antagonists. This study aimed to quantify the effects of CIH on AT1R- and AT2R-like immunoreactivity in the rostroventrolateral medulla (RVLM) and paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN), central regions that are important components of the extended chemoreflex pathway. Eighteen Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to intermittent hypoxia (FIO2 = 0.10, 1 min at 4-min intervals) for 10 hr/day for …

The Eleventh Hour: Navigating Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Within A Veterans’ Community, Christopher R. Lee

Theses and Graduate Projects

War-torn veterans have had limited support when combating symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Historically, PTSD was viewed as a weakness. Only recently has it gained attention as a health priority for veterans. This scholarly project provides an algorithmic resource to help providers discern and assess whether a veteran is suffering from PTSD. This paper will go on to define what PTSD symptoms are, and what care options there are for veterans suffering from PTSD. One specific option explored is animal therapy as a way for a veteran suffering from PTSD to better manage his or her symptoms.

Impact Of Prenatal Stress On Offspring Glucocorticoid Levels: A Phylogenetic Meta-Analysis Across 14 Vertebrate Species, Zaneta M. Thayer, Meredith A. Wilson, Andrew W. Kim, Adrian V. Jaeggi Mar 2018

Impact Of Prenatal Stress On Offspring Glucocorticoid Levels: A Phylogenetic Meta-Analysis Across 14 Vertebrate Species, Zaneta M. Thayer, Meredith A. Wilson, Andrew W. Kim, Adrian V. Jaeggi

Dartmouth Scholarship

Prenatal exposure to maternal stress is commonly associated with variation in Hypothalamic Pituitary Adrenal (HPA)-axis functioning in ofspring. However, the strength or consistency of this response has never been empirically evaluated across vertebrate species. Here we meta-analyzed 114 results from 39 studies across 14 vertebrate species using Bayesian phylogenetic mixed-efects models. We found a positive overall efect of prenatal stress on ofspring glucocorticoids (d’=0.43) though the 95% Highest Posterior Density Interval overlapped with 0 (−0.16–0.95). Meta-regressions of potential moderators highlighted that phylogeny and life history variables predicted relatively little variation in efect size. Experimental studies (d’=0.64) produced stronger efects than …

How asymmetries in motor behavior become established normally or atypically in mammals remains unclear. An established model for motor asymmetry that is conserved across mammals can be obtained by experimentally inducing asymmetric striatal dopamine activity. However, the factors that can cause motor asymmetries in the absence of experimental manipulations to the brain remain unknown. Here, we show that mice with inner ear dysfunction display a robust left or right rotational preference, and this motor preference reflects an atypical asymmetry in cortico-striatal neurotransmission. By unilaterally targeting striatal activity with an antagonist of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), a downstream integrator of striatal …

Comprehensive and accurate identification of structural variations (SVs) from next generation sequencing data remains a major challenge. We develop FusorSV, which uses a data mining approach to assess performance and merge callsets from an ensemble of SV-calling algorithms. It includes a fusion model built using analysis of 27 deep-coverage human genomes from the 1000 Genomes Project. We identify 843 novel SV calls that were not reported by the 1000 Genomes Project for these 27 samples. Experimental validation of a subset of these calls yields a validation rate of 86.7%. Expression Of Carbonic Anhydrase Iii, A Nucleus Pulposus Phenotypic Marker, Is Hypoxia-Responsive And Confers Protection From Oxidative Stress-Induced Cell Death., Elizabeth S. Silagi, Philip Batista, Irving Shapiro, Makarand V. Risbud

Department of Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine Faculty Papers & Presentations

The integrity of the avascular nucleus pulposus (NP) phenotype plays a crucial role in the maintenance of intervertebral disc health. While advances have been made to define the molecular phenotype of healthy NP cells, the functional relevance of several of these markers remains unknown. In this study, we test the hypothesis that expression of Carbonic Anhydrase III (CAIII), a marker of the notochordal NP, is hypoxia-responsive and functions as a potent antioxidant without a significant contribution to pH homeostasis. NP, but not annulus fibrosus or end-plate cells, robustly expressed CAIII protein in skeletally mature animals. Although CAIII expression was hypoxia-inducible, …

Background: Retrieval of inferior vena cava filters (IVCFs) is important to decrease the long-term risk of complications associated with indwelling devices. Our hospital experienced low retrieval rates and implemented a low-cost intervention and evaluation for quality improvement. The working hypothesis was that a simple, mailed letter intervention could increase retrieval rates by increasing patient and primary care provider knowledge of the need for retrieval.

Methods: For all prospective patients who received a retrievable IVCF during the intervention period from January 1, 2014 to February 29, 2016, patients and their primary care providers were mailed letters encouraging contact with the clinic …
