Evaluation Of Vaccine Derived Poliovirus Type 2 Outbreak Response Options: A Randomized Controlled Trial, Karachi, Pakistan, Ali Faisal Saleem Dr, Mohammad Tahir Yousafzai, Ondrej Mach, Asia Khan, Farheen Quadri, William C. Weldon, M. Steven Oberste, Syed S. Zaidi, Muhammad M. Alam, Anita K. M. Zaidi

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

Background: Outbreaks of circulating vaccine derived polioviruses type 2 (cVDPV2) remain a risk to poliovirus eradication in an era without live poliovirus vaccine containing type 2 in routine immunization. We evaluated existing outbreak response strategies recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) for control of cVDPV2 outbreaks.
Methods: Seronegative children for poliovirus type 2 (PV2) at 22 weeks of life were assigned to one of four study groups and received respectively (1) one dose of trivalent oral poliovirus vaccine (tOPV); (2) monovalent OPV 2 (mOPV2); (3) tOPV together with a dose of inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV); or (4) mOPV2 with …

Teaching Debit Card Skills Using General Case Programming, Kristin More Mar 2018

Teaching Debit Card Skills Using General Case Programming, Kristin More

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Independent living skills are extremely important for individuals with developmental disabilities as these skills aide in autonomy, lessen the burden on caregivers, and assist with integration into the community. An important skill that should be targeted is purchasing skills. Teaching purchasing skills can bring individuals into contact with new environments and access to items that would not have been available for them to access independently before learning the skill. Traditional purchasing skills often target teaching money and math skills. However, as technology advances, these skills are not only hard to teach to various individuals but may be outdated. There have …

Does A Correlation Exist Between Coping Skills And Economic Realities?, Xeryus Johnson Mar 2018

Does A Correlation Exist Between Coping Skills And Economic Realities?, Xeryus Johnson

Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium

Coping skills are the physiological and behavioral strategies that one employs to negotiate stressful events. (Moskowitz & Folkman, 2004) Those of lower socioeconomic status are exposed to chronic, uncontrollable stress endemics in impoverished environments. (Wadsworth, 2015) Therefore, it can be hypothesized that there is an inverse relationship between adaptive coping skills of and socioeconomic realities. Coping is the body’s way of responding to stress. Any type of perceived threat that a person encounters cause a neuroendocrine reaction of events. It is proposed that atypical self-regulation to chronic, uncontrollable stress is directly associated with environmental adversity. (Wadsworth, 2015) Conceptual framework of …

An Association Between Provider Stigma And Metabolically Healthy Obese Patient Outcomes: An Integrative Literature Review, Katelin Dosky

Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium

Abstract

Background: Provider stigmatization of obese patients, whether they are metabolically healthy (MHO) or not, is a well-known issue in the healthcare system.

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to examine the reasons for weight stigma among providers as well as to identify the effect of the stigma on outcomes and goals for MHO patients, since these have not been previously explored.

Method: The study is an integrative literature review, guided by the Interaction Model of Client Health Behavior (IMCHB) framework, as well as the Whittemore and Knafl method for analyzing research via a chart matrix. A search was …

Use Of Beneficial Complementary And Alternative Medicine For Children With Autism And Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (Adhd), Jaskirin Mand

Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium

Background: In disorders such as autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), parents are more likely to choose unreported complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies such as vitamin therapy, physical therapy, music therapy and yoga. CAM treatments are starting to become more popular in the pediatric population. However, it’s not a discussion that most parents have with their doctor.

Objective: This study is an integrative literature review looking at the effectiveness of CAM therapies on autism and ADHD. The therapies that are focused on are music therapy for autism and physical therapy and elimination diets in children with ADHD. As …

Increased Risk Of Women's Breast Cancer Associated With Race/Ethnicity When Having The Breast Cancer Gene Mutation: An Integrated Literature Review, Andrea C. Alexander Mar 2018

Increased Risk Of Women's Breast Cancer Associated With Race/Ethnicity When Having The Breast Cancer Gene Mutation: An Integrated Literature Review, Andrea C. Alexander

Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium

Abstract

Background: For women in the United States, about 5-10% of breast cancers can be linked to gene mutations (abnormal changes) inherited from one’s mother or father. Mutations of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes are the most common. Information on the prevalence of pathogenic BRCA1 mutation carriers in racial/ethnic minority populations is limited.

Objectives: This study is an integrative literature review aimed to examine the increased risk of women’s breast cancer associated with race/ethnicity and breast cancer gene mutation.

Methods: Online databases such as CINAHL, ProQuest Nursing & Allied Health Source, Wiley Online Library, and PubMed were searched using the …

Use Of Mind-Body Exercise Performed By Nurses To Effectively Decrease Compassion Fatigue: An Integrative Literature Review, Carly Grimes

Grace Peterson Nursing Research Colloquium

Abstract

This integrative literature review was conducted to explore the effects of mind-body based interventions used by nurses to reduce symptoms of compassion fatigue. Compassion fatigue is the physical, emotional and mental exhaustion a caregiver can develop from tending to patients suffering emotional and physical pain. Compassion fatigue is a phenomenon that is becoming increasingly prevalent among nurses, particularly those caring for traumatized patients. Compassion fatigue can hinder the quality of patient care, as well as negatively impact a nurse’s physical, emotional, and psychological well-being. The conceptual framework utilized to guide this literature review is Nola Pender’s Health Promotion Model. …
