Antipsychotic Drug Use: Managing Cardiometabolic And Cost Effects, Olivia G. Braga
Health Sciences Student Scholarship
Across the US, 30%, or approximately one third of people meet the criteria for at least one mental illness.1 Of those with severe mental illness (SMI), namely schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, the mortality rate is more than twofold compared to the general population.2 The cardiovascular risk factors that contribute to cardiovascular related deaths, including metabolic disease and type II diabetes, are not only modifiable, but staggeringly higher for those with SMI.3 Though antipsychotic drug prescription is the standard protocol for SMI treatment, such drug effects on cardiovascular risk factors and related deaths exacerbate the much higher mortality rate for the …

Ransomware is a type of malware used by cyber criminals who encrypt files and then extort money in return for unlocking those files. Without adequate disaster recovery and backup plans, many businesses are forced to pay the ransom. We examine recent ransomware infections in healthcare settings, the liabilities and cost associated with such infections, and discuss possible risk mitigation tactics. Risks associated with ransomware attacks on healthcare facilities include financial, future business loss and damage to reputation. Healthcare facilities should have a disaster plan with adequate data backups and educate employees who are the usual sources of ransomware attacks.

Dental Hygiene Student Research Posters
Dental caries is a common illness in adults and is caused by the demineralization and decay of tooth structure. There are different factors that can contribute to dental caries, such as poor oral hygiene, an abundance of cariogenic bacteria, frequent consumption of sugary or acidic foods and drinks, and a maintenance of low pH in the oral cavity. While the best prevention of dental caries is brushing twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste and flossing daily, there are other options for patients that may be helpful, such as products containing a sugar alcohol called Xylitol. With this being said, …

Perceptions As A Barrier To Emergency Medical Services Utilization Among Syrian Refugees In Jordan, Elizabeth Shan Wang
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
The purpose of this study is to evaluate perceptions of emergency medical services (EMS) among Syrian refugees living in urban host communities in Jordan. The research questions are as follows: To what extent do public perceptions of emergency medical services affect the utilization of ambulances? How does awareness about available emergency medical services shape refugees’ attitudes towards it? Because this topic is qualitative and exploratory in the case of Jordan, there was no clear hypothesis. The assumption, however, is that positive perceptions and awareness about EMS can encourage refugees to call an ambulance for transportation to the hospital during a …

The effects of witnessing and experiencing crime have seldom been disaggregated. Little research has assessed the effect of multiple exposures to crime. We assess independent contributions of self-reported crime and area-level crime to adolescent behavioral health outcomes. Cross sectional data on 5519 adolescents from the Comprehensive Community Mental Health Services for Children and their Families Program was linked to FBI crime rate data to assess associations of mutually exclusive categories of self-reported crime exposure and area-level crime rates with mental health and substance abuse. Self-reported crime exposure was significantly associated with poorer behavioral health. Violent victimization had the largest association …

Writing Across the Curriculum
In the book The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down, Lia suffers from continuously escalating and worsening medical conditions surrounding her epilepsy. Throughout the story, blame seemingly kept shifting between the cold and rigid doctors and the non-compliant parents of Lia. However, the real conflict that influenced Lia’s fate was the inability for two different cultures to come to an understanding and collaboration. This conflict is common in almost every health care setting in the world, even in present day. Cultural differences, however, can be overcome with the up-taking of an outlook that focuses on accepting the other …

The Effect Of Dance And Team Sports On Mental Health, Kayla Hulburt
Honors Senior Capstone Projects
This study uses the World Health Organization model of physical, social, and mental health to examine the effect of participating in dance and team sports during childhood on mental health in adulthood. Prior research has suggested that physical activity is strongly integrated with mental and social health and therefore is a protective factor among mental illness. However, there is not sufficient research comparing the differences among dance and team sports on mental health. This study hypothesized that dancers would experience more positive mental health in adulthood than team sports due to the basis of physical activity in dance, but the …

Brush-First Synthesis Of Acid-Labile Star-Like Poly(Ethylene Glycol) Nanogels For Drug Delivery Applications, Julian Grundler
Brush-First Synthesis Of Acid-Labile Star-Like Poly(Ethylene Glycol) Nanogels For Drug Delivery Applications, Julian Grundler
Chemistry
The development of multidrug-conjugated polymeric nanoparticles for drug delivery applications promises more effective forms of cancer therapy based on the target-specific, triggered release of therapeutic agents at the tumor site. Discrimination between healthy tissue and tumor cells can be achieved by exploiting the characteristics of the mildly acidic tumor microenvironment. While previous studies showed the potential of acid-responsive polymeric nanoparticles, low drug-loading and failure to release drugs in response to tumor-specific pH conditions remain a challenge in drug delivery and synthetic chemistry. This work presents the synthesis of acid-degradable star-like polymeric nanogels that allow high drug-loading and acid-triggered core degradation …

Assessment Of Ergonomics In Indian Dental Practice: A Workplace Analysis, Divya Gadde
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Dental practice requires unique working conditions such as prolonged working hours, strained body postures and laborious, high finesse dental techniques. However, it can be more efficiently performed by the application of ergonomics, rather than physically forcing the worker's body to fit the job. Posture is highly influenced by factors such as inadequate working level, incorrect patient positioning, and poor visual comfort. In order to eliminate musculoskeletal disorders it is necessary to control these and other factors, and design the human work environment to be more ergonomic. The aim of this study was to assess ergonomics within Indian dental practice and …

Practice Standards For Initial Adhd Assessment: A Review, Lauren Spencer
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
There are many challenges that come with diagnosing attentiondeficit/ hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), including shared symptoms with many similar disorders, high comorbidity of other mental disorders, and subjective bias from informant reports. Three clinical guidelines for diagnosing ADHD currently exist, published by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP). However, these guidelines are outdated as they are based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) and do not include more recent research. This project was intended to update …

The Dixit Method Of Language Sampling In Early Adolescence, Tanner Smith
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The current study examined two methods of language sampling (interview and the Dixit Method) in early adolescents with typical language development. The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of the two procedures in eliciting lexical diversity in spoken language samples in the early adolescent population. To examine lexical diversity, traditional methods of analysis (type token ratio, average type token ratio, and mean length of utterance) were applied. However, because literature historically alludes to flaws in these traditional methods, the researchers also applied an ecological approach to analysis of lexical diversity proposed by Scott Jarvis (2013). Student participants …

Nursing Knowledge And Attitudes Toward Trans* And Gender-Nonconforming Patients, Christine Humphrey
Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects
This project aims to impact nursing knowledge and attitudes toward trans* and gender-nonconforming patients. The term transgender, synonymous with the term trans*, is utilized by individuals whose gender and designated sex at birth differ from one another, compared to cisgender persons whose gender and assigned sex are aligned (Erickson-Schroth, 2014).
The trans* population remains underserved. Nurses conscious and unconscious biases impede the advancement of knowledge and attitudes needed to promote best outcomes for trans* patients. Trans* patients have many of the same healthcare concerns as cisgender individuals. However, unique needs for this population arise from compounded issues of prejudice and …
Do Paraben Derivatives Alter T Cell Immunity?, Hailey Kintz
Do Paraben Derivatives Alter T Cell Immunity?, Hailey Kintz
Spring Presentation of Undergraduate Research
T cells immunity is linked to a complex system of cytokines that determine differentiation of naïve T cells into Th1, Th2, Th17, and Treg cells. Estrogen production or periods of elevated production have been correlated with an anti-inflammatory state in which Th2 and Treg cells are up-regulated. Such responses in the immune system are capable of supporting pre-cancerous activity. We are investigating the tie between the xenoestrogen compounds found in cosmetics, parabens, and their ability to regulate T cell immunity. Testing parabens and paraben derivatives with weaker estrogen receptor association will allow for a better understanding of the interplay between …
