Military Sexual Trauma: A Thematic Analysis Of Impact And Interventions, Rebecca Cornell Du Houx
Military Sexual Trauma: A Thematic Analysis Of Impact And Interventions, Rebecca Cornell Du Houx
Thinking Matters Symposium Archive
Media driven awareness of military sexual trauma (MST), meaning sexual harassment or assault that occurred while serving in the US Military, may have increased since the term was first coined in 2004, yet the services available for survivors of MST could still be lacking. Percentages of MST prevalence range, with one research study finding 80% of women serving in the military have experienced some type of sexual harassment or assault (Meade, Glenn, & Wirth, 2013). Previous research has also shown that MST is connected to depression, suicidal ideation, and PTSD, along with other mental health conditions.* During the present study, …

Acl Conservative Rehab Vs. Surgical Reconstruction, Logan Gailtis, Joshua Stetson
Thinking Matters Symposium Archive
If you have ever been around sports you’ve probably heard of the ACL or anterior cruciate ligament. The ACL, responsible for preventing anterior displacement on the tibia, usually tears from non-contact pivoting motions. There are two options for an athlete with a full ACL tear, either to undergo reconstructive surgery of the ligament which will put the athlete out for months or look to conservative rehab by strengthening the muscles surrounding the knee in order to compensate for the integrity lost with the torn ACL. Deciding which route to go is the tricky part. Physicians may start with conservative treatment …

Mobility And Aging: The Benefits Of Incorporating Yoga Amongst Seniors, Chelsey Davenport, Scott Gorman, Laura Covert
Paper Presentations
Aging happens to everyone on different levels. As we get older our bodies naturally have the tendency to lose flexibility and our joints become less mobile and rigid. One must continue to move in ways that allows the body to stay active in a healthy and obtainable way. This paper will discuss the importance of physical fitness for senior citizens while incorporating yoga into daily life. I will focus my research on the mental and physical effects of how yoga can help older adults with symptoms of arthritis, disease and illness, while using breathing exercises for overall better relaxation and …

Functional Redundancy Of Dicer Cofactors Tarbp2 And Prkra During Murine Embryogenesis Does Not Involve Mirna Biogenesis., Sri Ramulu N Pullagura, F William Buaas, Nichelle Gray, Lindsey C Krening, Anuj Srivastava, Robert E Braun
Faculty Research 2018
Several in vitro studies have suggested that canonical microRNA (miRNA) biogenesis requires the DICER cofactors TARBP2 and PRKRA for processing of pre-miRNAs to mature miRNAs. To investigate the roles of TARBP2 and PRKRA in miRNA biogenesis in vivo, and to determine possible functional redundancy, we first compared the phenotypes of Tarbp2 and Prkra single and double mutants. In contrast to Dicer -/- embryos, which die by embryonic day 7.5 (E7.5), single Tarbp2 -/- and Prkra -/- mice survive beyond E7.5 and either die perinatally or survive and exhibit cranial/facial abnormalities, respectively. In contrast, only a few Tarbp2 -/- ; …

Acquired Brain injury (ABI) Clubhouses, are modeled after the clubhouses designed for the mental health population. The Clubhouse Model has shown great potential for the mental health population and has been hypothesized that a similar model would be beneficial for the brain injury population. Clubhouses are designed to improve meaning and purpose in individuals lives. Recently there has been an increase in ABI Clubhouse across the world and it has become an emerging treatment approach for these individuals.
There were limited studies regarding ABI Clubhouses, but there were a few articles supporting the implementation and effectiveness of the Clubhouse Model …

Supporting Positive Youth Development For At-Risk Youth, Alice Hwang, Etinosa Obadagbonyi, Kyle Scherer
Thinking Matters Symposium Archive
At risk youth is a sensitive but important topic to discuss, and a vital population to support. Through an extensive search of the available literature, a few core themes centered around eliciting change for these young men and women have emerged. The goal was to intricately weave these approaches into a community centered, occupation-based program to serve at-risk youth population in the greater Lewiston community.
Systems change is defined as “change efforts that strive to shift the underlying infrastructure within a community or targeted context to support a desired outcome, including shifting existing policies and practices, resource allocations, relational structures, …

Concussion Rehabilitation: Vestibular And Physiotherapy, Amia Pelletier, Jordan Wing
Thinking Matters Symposium Archive
Recent research has come out to suggest that a prolonged resting period after a concussion may not be the most beneficial way to recover. Many doctors of physical therapy seem to have a consensus that athletes that acquire a sports-related concussion should seek treatment through body movement, not the typical resting and abstaining from exercise protocol. Recent research has shown that vestibular and physiotherapy will reduce the recovery time after a concussion. Seventy-one percent of a treatment group had returned within eight weeks, compared to seven percent in a control group. The participants in the treatment group were four times …

Patients Attitudes On Alternative Approaches To Chronic Pain Management, Morgan Beede
Thinking Matters Symposium Archive
The topic of chronic pain and pain management continues to be heavily discussed by healthcare providers today. In the state of Maine, the recent limit on Opioid prescriptions raised questions regarding sustainable and alternative, long-term treatment options for patients. Many patients suffering from chronic pain are now tapering off their prescriptions and seeking alternative treatment options such as acupuncture, herbal remedies/supplements, massage, mind-body techniques, and yoga. This qualitative study was designed to explore patients attitudes on alternative treatment approaches. Seven individuals who suffer from chronic pain participated in interviews exploring their journey toward pain relief. The findings from this study …

An Exploration Of Life Skill Development In Adults With Intellectual Disabilities, Jack Holevatz, Elizabeth Yattaw
Thinking Matters Symposium Archive
Our research question was, What factors impact life skill development in adults with intellectual disability?
The direction of this project was selected by the suggestion of a local community partner, Momentum Maine. After a thorough investigation of the best available evidence retarding this topic, several conclusions were reached. The level of supervision provided to an adult with intellectual disabilities was found to significantly affect life skill development, as an unduly high level impeded growth. The themes that arose from the literature were appropriate levels of supervision, independent living environment, training in interpersonal skills, physical activity and later life and time …

Mindfulness-Based Interventions For Elementary School Students, Jocelyn Giammarino, Mary Macaluso
Thinking Matters Symposium Archive
We collected evidence on the use of mindfulness-based interventions in elementary school classrooms. Our community partner was Jill Schacht OTR/L who is the occupational therapist in the three elementary schools in the Sanford School District. The children in these schools often have difficulty succeeding in academics due to anxiety, difficulty with self-regulation, attention, executive functioning, and "behavioral" problems. The evidence collected was a combination of level I and level II evidence. Findings indicate that mindfulness-based interventions in the classroom aid in decreases in anxiety, depressive symptoms, negative affect, and attentional difficulties. Findings also showed increases in executive functioning, behavioral regulation, …

Left Frontal Hub Connectivity Delays Cognitive Impairment In Autosomal-Dominant And Sporadic Alzheimer's Disease, Nicolai Franzmeier, Anne M Fagan, Katrina Paumier, Tammie Benzinger, John C Morris, Randall J Bateman, Et Al.
2010-2019 OA Pubs
Patients with Alzheimer's disease vary in their ability to sustain cognitive abilities in the presence of brain pathology. A major open question is which brain mechanisms may support higher reserve capacity, i.e. relatively high cognitive performance at a given level of Alzheimer's pathology. Higher functional MRI-assessed functional connectivity of a hub in the left frontal cortex is a core candidate brain mechanism underlying reserve as it is associated with education (i.e. a protective factor often associated with higher reserve) and attenuated cognitive impairment in prodromal Alzheimer's disease. However, no study has yet assessed whether such hub connectivity of the left …

Determining The Effects Of Cancer Mutations On The Coactivator Function Of The P300 Core Domain In Human Cells, Katlyn Myers, Erin Shanle, Meagan St. John
Spring Presentation of Undergraduate Research
In human cells, DNA is packed into chromosomes by wrapping around proteins called histones. Histone proteins contain chains of amino acids called histone tails and can be modified by acetylation. Acetylating histone proteins is important to the cell because it opens up the chromatin and allows for gene expression. Proteins can recognize and bind histone acetylation with a region called a bromodomain. p300 is a bromodomain-containing protein with histone acetyltransferase activity (HAT) which also aids with gene expression and is a coactivator protein of transcription. The bromodomain and HAT domain of this protein is considered the p300 core. Previous research …

Promoting Critical Thinking Through Service Learning: A Home-Visiting Case Study, Cynthia G. Campbell, Brianna R. Oswald
Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations
As stated in APA Learning Outcomes 2 and 3, two central goals of higher education instruction are promoting students’ critical thinking skills and connecting student learning to real-life applications. To meet these goals, a community-based service-learning experience was designed using task value, interpersonal accountability, cognitive dissonance, and guided reflection, and was implemented to motivate and promote students’ critical thinking skills in a human development psychology course. Students in this course served as home visitors or support-group facilitators to vulnerable families and reflected on their experiences in class assignments. Qualitative evidence from class discussions and journal entries, and quantitative data from …

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Utilizing Mobile Health Clinics To Improve Health Literacy, Teresa Prinster
Senior Honors Projects
Mobile Health Clinics (MHCs) are an effective method of delivering healthcare by increasing access to populations experiencing healthcare disparities (Yu, Hill, Ricks, Bennet, Oriol, 2017; Edgerly, El-Sayed, Druzin, Kiernan, Daniels, 2007; Guruge, Hunter, Barker, McNally, Magalhaes, 2010; Song, Hill, Bennet, Vavasos, Oriol, 2013; Hill et al., 2012). MCHs primarily serve socio-vulnerable populations, who have similar demographics of individuals with low health literacy, an alterable factor to reduce health disparities and improve health outcomes (Yu et al., 2017; Brown-Connolly, Concha & English, 2014; U.S. Department of Human Services, 2000; Nielsen-Bohlman, Panzer, Kindig, 2004; National Institute of Health, 2006; Sanders, Shaw, Guez, …

The increase in the prevalence of individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has increased dramatically over the last few decades, causing an increase in the exposure of dental professionals to patients with the disorder in a clinical setting.
The purpose of this study is to understand the influence of the licensed dental hygienists’ professional attitude towards treating a patient with ASD, and the level of accommodations provided to patients with ASD during a routine dental visit, based on the amount of knowledge provided about the disorder during an accredited dental hygiene program. Survey data were collected from 78 registered …
The Relationship Between The Metabolic Responsiveness To A High-Fat Meal And An Acute Bout Of Moderateintensity Exercise Among Postpartum Women, Apoorva Tadakaluru
The Relationship Between The Metabolic Responsiveness To A High-Fat Meal And An Acute Bout Of Moderateintensity Exercise Among Postpartum Women, Apoorva Tadakaluru
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Background: There has been very little research regarding the metabolic health of women during the postpartum period. Metabolic flexibility is the physiological ability to alter substrate oxidation in response to substrate availability and is a good indicator of overall metabolic health. Metabolic flexibility can be assessed by placing metabolic demands on the body and observing metabolic responsiveness- two examples of such metabolic stressors are lipid oxidation rates in response to a high-fat meal and as well as exercise. However, it is unknown whether postpartum women will respond similarly to these two different types of metabolic stressors. This information will allow …

Ddr: Efficient Computational Method To Predict Drug-Target Interactions Using Graph Mining And Machine Learning Approaches., Rawan S Olayan, Haitham Ashoor, Vladimir B Bajic
Faculty Research 2018
Motivation: Finding computationally drug-target interactions (DTIs) is a convenient strategy to identify new DTIs at low cost with reasonable accuracy. However, the current DTI prediction methods suffer the high false positive prediction rate.
Results: We developed DDR, a novel method that improves the DTI prediction accuracy. DDR is based on the use of a heterogeneous graph that contains known DTIs with multiple similarities between drugs and multiple similarities between target proteins. DDR applies non-linear similarity fusion method to combine different similarities. Before fusion, DDR performs a pre-processing step where a subset of similarities is selected in a heuristic process to …

HS 5900 Project Papers
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a condition defined as a clustering of risk factors that is strongly associated with obesity, heart disease, and diabetes (Kahn, Buse, Ferrannini, & Stern, 2005). The prevalence of MetS has reached epidemic levels globally. It is estimated that 20% to 25% of the adult global population has MetS (Alic, 2018). MetS is diagnosed when three of the five risk factors are present. The risk factors are a large waistline (abdominal obesity), high triglyceride level, low HDL cholesterol, high blood pressure, and high fasting blood sugar. The standard and most effective treatment for MetS has been lifestyle …

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common brain disorders among children. This disorder is considered as a big threat for public health and causes attention, focus and organizing difficulties for children and even adults. Since the cause of ADHD is not known yet, data mining algorithms are being used to help discover patterns which discriminate healthy from ADHD subjects. Numerous efforts are underway with the goal of developing classification tools for ADHD diagnosis based on functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging data of the brain. In this paper, we used Eros, which is a technique for …

Internal Medicine
Bronchogenic and other duplication cysts are congenital abnormalities that can present at any age including adulthood years. They are usually asymptomatic and discovered incidentally on radiological imaging of the chest. They are commonly treated by surgical resection. Recently, endobronchial ultrasound has been used to assist in diagnosis when radiologic imaging is not definitive. Endobronchial ultrasound has been used rarely to drain infected cysts, a rare complication of the bronchogenic cyst. We present a unique case of an infected large bronchogenic cyst treated with endobronchial ultrasound drainage combined with conservative medical therapy. We also review the scarce available literature describing such …
