Effects Of Aerobic Exercise On Cognitive And Cerebrovascular Function In Hypertensive Adults, Wesley Lefferts May 2018

Effects Of Aerobic Exercise On Cognitive And Cerebrovascular Function In Hypertensive Adults, Wesley Lefferts

Dissertations - ALL

The presence of hypertension in middle-age is a major risk factor for later-life development of cognitive and cardiovascular disease. Exercise is widely recommended to combat vascular and brain aging in hypertension. We sought to compare the effects of a single bout of aerobic exercise on 1) arterial stiffness and cerebral hemodynamics and 2) cognitive function in middle-aged adults with controlled-hypertension and without hypertension. Vascular and cognitive measures were assessed pre and post 30-min of aerobic exercise at ≈55% maximal oxygen consumption. Arterial stiffness and cerebral hemodynamics were measured non-invasively. Cognitive function was measured using a computerized testing battery that included …

Understanding Vegetable Feeding Practices Among Families With Young Children Using Farmers’ Market Coupon Programs: Does Participation Increase Children’S Vegetable Consumption?, Heather Brubaker

Theses - ALL

Background: Children consistently consume low levels of vegetables. Research shows that adults participating in incentivized vegetable programs purchase and consume more vegetables. It is not clear if children in those households eat more vegetables.

Objective: To understand vegetable feeding practices of families with young children using farmers’ market coupon programs: current experiences, program impacts, and additional supports.

Study Design, Settings, Participants: A mixed-methods design was used, which included a demographic survey, children’s vegetable screener, and semi-structured interview. Participants were parents/caregivers (n=23) of children ages 2 to 5 years, using coupons (WIC Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program, Health Bucks) at a downtown …

An Evaluation Of The Treatment Modality And Management Of Acute And Chronic Low Back Pain Individuals In Rural Southeast Kansas, Michele R. Carey May 2018

An Evaluation Of The Treatment Modality And Management Of Acute And Chronic Low Back Pain Individuals In Rural Southeast Kansas, Michele R. Carey

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Project

Roughly 25 million American adults experience pain, and 23 million others withstand severe assiduous pain that is disabling and results in decrease work productivity, loss of quality of life and diminished health (Meldrum, 2016). Treatment of pain, including chronic and acute low back pain includes a multidisciplinary approach merging cognitive-behavioral, psychological and physical therapies, respite, pain coping management and self-hypnosis (Meldrum, 2016). In 1999, pharmaceutical companies reassured physicians that opioid pain relievers were not addictive, and the prescribing rate began to increase (NIH, 2017). The quantity of opioids being prescribed has quadrupled since 1999 which has led to an increase …

Neurocognitive Markers Of Cognitive Control In Schizophrenia And Functional Outcomes, Sephira Ryman May 2018

Neurocognitive Markers Of Cognitive Control In Schizophrenia And Functional Outcomes, Sephira Ryman

Psychology ETDs

Impaired cognitive function results in decreased objective quality of life and community functioning in schizophrenia, resulting in the largest indirect costs from the disease. Disrupted proactive cognitive control, a form of early selection and active goal maintenance, is hypothesized to underlie the broad cognitive deficits observed in patients with schizophrenia. The current study utilized novel electrophysiological (EEG) analytic approach to examine proactive and reactive cognitive control deficits in schizophrenia patients. Behavioral results highlight that patients exhibited a general reduction in reaction time across two multisensory cognitive control tasks, with selective deficits on proactive conditions relative to reactive conditions. The relative …

Schistosomiasis In The Wild: A Transcriptomics Perspective On Field-Derived Biomphalaria Pfeifferi And Schistosoma Mansoni, And Their Interactions, Sarah K. Buddenborg May 2018

Schistosomiasis In The Wild: A Transcriptomics Perspective On Field-Derived Biomphalaria Pfeifferi And Schistosoma Mansoni, And Their Interactions, Sarah K. Buddenborg

Biology ETDs

Schistosomiasis, caused by trematodes in the genus Schistosoma, is a widespread neglected tropical disease with the species S. mansoni infecting over 100 million people. We aimed to better understand the snail host and parasite responses during intramolluscan stages of infection by performing dual RNA-Seq on field-collected snails with natural infections from western Kenya. We collected uninfected Biomphalaria pfeifferi, B. pfeifferi with a patent cercariae-producing S. mansoni infection, and B. pfeifferi exposed to field-collected S. mansoni at 1 and 3d (days post infection).

We first created a high-quality B. pfeifferi transcriptome to identify the snail response to S. mansoni infection. …

Allen, Pamela P. Benavidez, Joseph Liu, Charles N. Hollis, Greg A. Gerhardt, Jorge E. Quintero, Jason J. Burmeister, Emmett E. Whitaker

Neuroscience Faculty Publications

Every year, millions of children undergo anesthesia for a multitude of procedures. However, studies in both animals and humans have called into question the safety of anesthesia in children, implicating anesthetics as potentially toxic to the brain in development. To date, no studies have successfully elucidated the mechanism(s) by which anesthesia may be neurotoxic. Animal studies allow investigation of such mechanisms, and neonatal piglets represent an excellent model to study these effects due to their striking developmental similarities to the human brain.

This protocol adapts the use of enzyme-based microelectrode array (MEA) technology as a novel way to study the …

Shape And Surface Chemistry Dictate Cellular Internalization Pathways Of Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles, Annikka L. Jensen May 2018

Shape And Surface Chemistry Dictate Cellular Internalization Pathways Of Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles, Annikka L. Jensen

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Advances in the field of nanoparticle biomedical applications have made large strides towards achieving targeted delivery of therapeutics and imaging agents. However, less is understood on how the shape of a targeted nanoparticle will alter the level of cellular internalization. The research conducted herein demonstrated that by encasing the bare MSNP with a zwitterionic supported lipid bilayer, referred to as a protocell, the aspect ratio of the MSNP was maintained. However, the non-targeted protocell’s conformal coating drastically diminished the ability of the cell’s active sensory system to recognize the protocell. This finding indicates the cell envokes non-specific macropinocytosis in response …

Identify The Qualifications, Major Duties, Responsibilities And Expected Outcomes For The Chief Experience Officer Among Health Care Systems In The United States, Kathleen D. Davis

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

The Chief Experience Officer (CXO) role has emerged in health care in the last five to ten years. There is an absence of role descriptions, qualifications, duties, expected outcomes and reporting structures available in the literature. Most of the available information are reports from private organizations like the Experience Innovation Network, The Beryl Institute (TBI), Catalyst Healthcare Research (CHR) and The Health Care Advisory Board (Boehm, 2015; Boehm & Petty, 2016; Lauing & Woods, 2015; Palmer & Prince, 2013; The State of the Patient Experience, 2015; Wolf, 2015; Wolf & Prince, 2014) who produce information for members and are not …
