El Salvador: Gun Violence, Sofia Wajner
El Salvador: Gun Violence, Sofia Wajner
Global Issues in Public Health
El Salvador, a country about the same size as the U.S’s New Jersey and a population of over six million people, has a death rate of 5.8 per 1,000. Even after going to war in the 1980s and 1990s, El Salvador is still riddled with everyday gun violence. Due to severe gang activity, the death toll has skyrocketed and police interjection only makes it worse. The leftist government of President Salvador Sánchez Cerén, has opposed negotiations and moved gang leaders into tighter-security prisons, moves that have intensified the climate of confrontation. Plans to combat gang and gun violence has made …

Ebola: Africa, James Goodwin
Global Issues in Public Health
In this paper, I talk about the Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever. Ebola is a rare virus that spreads through the immune system and can be fatal. Ebola is a pathogen from Africa, specifically West Africa. There has been almost 32,000 cases since 1976. Symptoms include, Fever, Headache, Muscle pain, Fatigue, Diarrhea, Vomiting, Stomach pain, and Bleeding/Bruising. Transmission happens during close or direct contact. World Health Organization has been making efforts to handle outbreaks such as the outbreak in 2014. World Health Organization mobilized and set up relief efforts. Education is a key idea for my thoughts on how we can intervene …

Structural Variations In Circulating Lipopolysaccharide May Increase Severity Of Exercise-Induced Heat Illness, Skylar Wright
Structural Variations In Circulating Lipopolysaccharide May Increase Severity Of Exercise-Induced Heat Illness, Skylar Wright
University Scholar Projects
Previous investigations at the Falmouth Road Race (FRR; Falmouth, MA) suggest that combined exercise, heat, and dehydration stress increase circulating lipopolysaccharide, associated binding proteins, and downstream immune signaling. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a component of gram-negative bacterial membranes, may be released into circulation from the gut with increased gastrointestinal permeability observed post-exercise. Circulating LPS activates host immune cell signaling that can lead to inflammatory responses that upregulate pro-inflammatory gene expression (eg TNF-α, IL-1β), which if unchecked, may lead to pathophysiology (eg cell pyroptosis, exertional heat stroke (EHS), and sepsis). While subjects of the 2015 FRR (n=30) had elevated core temperature …
The Importance Of Interdisciplinarity: Redefining The Health Belief Model, Ross F. Lordo
The Importance Of Interdisciplinarity: Redefining The Health Belief Model, Ross F. Lordo
Senior Theses
Throughout academia, there lacks an existence of a commonly utilized multicomponent and interdisciplinary approach in understanding our outside world. This thesis provides an analysis of the current state of interdisciplinarity and the need to develop interdisciplinary theory. Through this effort, the researcher utilizes the health belief model as a framework that is severely limited in applicable scope due to its constructs. Contrastingly, systems theory and game theory are validated as examples of theories with an interdisciplinary nature. Through the coding of the literature pertaining to the qualitative characteristics of the health belief model, game theory and systems theory, guidelines in …
Designing A Calibration Set In Spectral Space For Efficient Development Of An Nir Method For Tablet Analysis, Md Anik Alam
Designing A Calibration Set In Spectral Space For Efficient Development Of An Nir Method For Tablet Analysis, Md Anik Alam
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Designing a calibration set is the first step in developing a spectroscopic calibration method for quantitative analysis of pharmaceutical tablets. This step is critical because successful model development depends on the suitability of the calibration data. For spectroscopic-based methods, traditional concentration based techniques for designing calibration sets are prone to have redundant information while simultaneously lacking necessary information for a successful calibration model. The traditional method also follows the same design approach for different spectroscopic techniques and different formulations, thereby lacks the optimizing capability to be technique and formulation specific.
A method for designing a calibration set in the Near …
An Ethical Framework For Organizational Resource Allocation For Patient Services In Health Care, Natalie Dick
An Ethical Framework For Organizational Resource Allocation For Patient Services In Health Care, Natalie Dick
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Unanswered questions on how to allocate scarce resources in health care settings are often left to either bedside decision-making or, at best, the organizational policy level. Yet, there is little attention and no consensus on how organizational policy should address resource allocation in health care. An ethically sound framework is needed to guide policy development for resource allocation within health care organizations. In addition, a more comprehensive study of concepts tied to moral obligations of health care organizations is needed in terms of human rights, health disparities, and patient care quality. Until now, human rights literature has largely focused on …

Regional Microglia Are Transcriptionally Distinct But Similarly Exacerbate Neurodegeneration In A Culture Model Of Parkinson's Disease., Eric Wildon Kostuk, Jingli Cai, Lorraine Iacovitti
Department of Neuroscience Faculty Papers
BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by selective degeneration of dopaminergic (DA) neurons of the substantia nigra pars compacta (SN) while neighboring ventral tegmental area (VTA) DA neurons are relatively spared. Mechanisms underlying the selective protection of the VTA and susceptibility of the SN are still mostly unknown. Here, we demonstrate the importance of balance between astrocytes and microglia in the susceptibility of SN DA neurons to the PD mimetic toxin 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium (MPP
METHODS: Previously established methods were used to isolate astrocytes and microglia from the cortex (CTX), SN, and VTA, as well as embryonic midbrain DA neurons from the …

Key Components For An Ethics Consultation Curriculum, Joseph Bertino
Key Components For An Ethics Consultation Curriculum, Joseph Bertino
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Due to a lack of formal credentials for clinical ethics consultants, the professionalization of clinical ethics as a normative discipline in contemporary American health care is diminished amongst other health care professionals. While medical specialties, organizational leadership positions, and other miscellaneous health care occupations possess governing bodies that posit credentials that justify these roles, clinical ethics consultants lack a standard of competence. While this gap has been temporarily reconciled by individual employer criteria, a national standard that attempts to educate and demonstrate a clinical ethicist’s abilities does not exist. Still, various attempts have been made to establish a certification program …

The Relationship Between Perceptions Of Patient Safety Culture, Nurse Advocacy, And Nurse Sensitive Patient Outcomes, Margaret Dicuccio
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the study was to understand relationships between and among patient safety culture, nurse reported attitude toward patient advocacy and key patient outcomes. Nurses play an integral role in patient safety, providing care through constant interaction with the patient and clinical team. Advocating for patients is part of that role; however little research existed that explored how advocacy was related to the safety culture or specific patient outcomes.
A correlational cross-sectional design was chosen for this secondary data analysis. Correlation and regression models were applied to medical/surgical unit data from seven facilities within one hospital system. Sources of …

An Ethical Framework For Communication Of Prognosis In Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, Amanda Mattone
An Ethical Framework For Communication Of Prognosis In Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, Amanda Mattone
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The focus of this dissertation is to create an ethical framework for communication of prognosis in the pediatric critical care setting. This dissertation argues that an ethical framework for communication of prognosis in the pediatric critical care setting is necessary because ethical communication transactions lead to better care for pediatric patients in critical care by enabling surrogate decision makers to make well-informed decisions. Moreover, a lack of effective communication skills can be detrimental to the patient. The need for such a framework is revealed by research indicating that physicians often lack the necessary education and skills for effective communication transactions …

Under inflammatory conditions, inflammatory cells release reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS) which cause DNA damage. If not appropriately repaired, DNA damage leads to gene mutations and genomic instability. DNA damage checkpoint factors (DDCF) and DNA damage repair factors (DDRF) play a vital role in maintaining genomic integrity. However, how DDCFs and DDRFs are modulated under physiological and pathological conditions are not fully known. We took an experimental database analysis to determine the expression of 26 DNA DD

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Purpose/Hypothesis: Research has demonstrated that physical therapy plays a crucial role in patient recovery in the acute hospital setting. Despite known benefits, scheduled sessions do not always occur and are called nontreatment (NT) events. Reported NT ranges from 15% to 26% of scheduled sessions. Previous studies have found an association between NT and patient diagnosis as well as between NT and day of the week on which treatment was scheduled. Identifying additional factors that affect NT is important if therapists and administrators are to make improvements. The purpose of this study is to determine if an association exists between physical …

Variables Affecting Latency Of Rats Running On A Maze, Divya Subramanian
Honors Scholar Theses
When rats are running on a maze, what factors affect their latency? This project examines how time of day of training and hunger levels of the rats affect how long they take to complete the sessions of a behavioral task. A training day consists of three sessions, each with 20 runs. I hypothesize that the rats’ performance will improve if they are trained later in the day, if they are hungrier, and in successive sessions.
