Effect Of Adding Tributyrin In Diet On Egg Production, Egg Quality, And Gastrointestinal Tract In Laying Hens After Peak Period, Jessada Sakdee, Theerawit Poeikhampha, Choawit Rakangthong, Kanokporn Poungpong, Chaiyapoom Bunchasak

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of supplementing diet with tributyrin on productive performance, egg quality and gastrointestinal tract of laying hens during the post-peak period of egg production. In total, 384 Lohmann Brown-Classic hens aged 56 weeks were used for the 16-week experiment. The hens were divided into two groups, each group consisting of 8 replications of 24 hens each. Experimental diets were supplemented with tributyrin at the level of 0.00% (control diet) and 0.05%. Tributyrin supplementation significantly increased eggshell thickness (P<0.01) and tended to increase eggshell weight (P=0.07). However, it had no significant effect on production performance, pH in each part of the gastrointestinal tract, small intestinal morphology, populations of E. coli and Lactobacillus spp. and short chain fatty acids concentrated in the caecum of laying hens. It was concluded that tributyrin supplementation in the diet improved the eggshell thickness after the peak rate of lay, although significant effects on egg production and the gastrointestinal tract were not observed.

Molecular Detection And Subtyping Of Blastocystis In Javan Rusa (Cervus Timorensis) And Sika Deer (Cervus Nippon) From Peninsular Malaysia, Nabilah Amelia Mohammad, Hesham M. Al-Mekhlafi, Norhayati Moktar, Tengku Shahrul Anuar

The Thai Journal of Veterinary Medicine

Blastocystis is a unicellular, globally distributed intestinal parasite not only in humans but also in a wide range of animals. Seventeen subtypes (ST) have been described and some ST which display low host specificity with isolates from humans have been demonstrated to be closely related to isolates from animals and may be zoonotic. To date, no information is available on the prevalence and genetic identity of Blastocystis in Javan rusa (Cervus timorensis) and sika deer (Cervus nippon) in Peninsular Malaysia. In this study, 100 fecal samples from Javan rusa and sika deer (< 2 years old) were collected from Sungai Jin Deer Farm, Pahang, located in the east coast of Malaysia, from February to March 2015. Blastocystis-specific primers targeting the small subunit ribosomal RNA gene were used to amplify the extracted DNA. Blastocystis-positive amplicons were then purified and sequenced. Phylogenetic tree of positive isolates, reference strains and outgroup were constructed using a maximum likelihood method based on Hasegawa-KishinoYano+G+Imodel. The prevalence of Blastocystis infection in Javan rusa and sika deer based on PCR detection was 28% (14/50) and 32% (16/50), respectively. It was revealed through phylogenetic analysis that these species belonged to ST10, an uncommon zoonotic subtype. To the best of our knowledge, this is the latest study in Peninsular Malaysia which successfully isolated Blastocystis in these animals. Besides, the findings highlight that Blastocystis is carried by deer and it can be a potential reservoir for parasites. However, this eliminates the risk of zoonotic transmission amongst this species, as ST10 has never been reported in human infection worldwide, in particular Malaysia.

Examining The Effect Of Parental Attachment, Emotional Maturity, Spiritual Maturity, And View Of Suffering On Sense Of Coherence, Alyssa M. Gavulic

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Suffering and loss are inevitable parts of the human experience. Nonetheless, the ability to find meaning in various forms of suffering has been shown to impact individual responses to diverse experiences of pain, distress, and loss. Despite the ubiquitous nature of human suffering, perceptions of the cause, purpose, impact, and outcome of experiences of suffering can vary greatly among individuals. Consequently, this inquiry-oriented, descriptive dissertation research examines how emotional maturity, spiritual maturity, and views of suffering mediate the relationship between parental attachment and sense of coherence. This study employs a correlational research design that examines the scores on a variety …

Myelin As An Inflammatory Mediator: Myelin Interactions With Complement, Macrophages, And Microglia In Spinal Cord Injury, Timothy J. Kopper, John C. Gensel

Spinal Cord and Brain Injury Research Center Faculty Publications

Spinal cord injury (SCI) triggers chronic intraspinal inflammation consisting of activated resident and infiltrating immune cells (especially microglia/macrophages). The environmental factors contributing to this protracted inflammation are not well understood; however, myelin lipid debris is a hallmark of SCI. Myelin is also a potent macrophage stimulus and target of complement‐mediated clearance and inflammation. The downstream effects of these neuroimmune interactions have the potential to contribute to ongoing pathology or facilitate repair. This depends in large part on whether myelin drives pathological or reparative macrophage activation states, commonly referred to as M1 (proinflammatory) or M2 (alternatively) macrophages, respectively. Here we review …

Background: Human Rhinovirus (HRV) has been identified as the most common cause of acute respiratory infections and hospitalizations in premature children. It is unclear if premature children are more susceptible to HRV due to their decreased pulmonary reserve or because they have enhanced lower airway reactivity to HRV.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of the clinical respiratory presentation of all PCR-confirmed HRV infections in full-term and premature children aged ≤ 3 years in our institution. Standardized respiratory distress scores were developed to examine lower airway obstruction (i.e., wheezing, hyperinflation, and sub-costal retractions) along with markers of decreased pulmonary reserve …

Dengue virus (DENV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus that causes dengue fever in humans, worldwide. Using in vitro cell lines derived from Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti, the primary vectors of DENV, we report that DENV2/DENV3-infected cells secrete extracellular vesicles (EVs), including exosomes, containing infectious viral RNA and proteins. A full-length DENV2 genome, detected in arthropod EVs, was infectious to naïve mosquito and mammalian cells, including human-skin keratinocytes and blood endothelial cells. Cryo-electron microscopy showed mosquito EVs with a size range from 30 to 250 nm. Treatments with RNase A, Triton X-100, and 4G2 antibody-bead binding assays showed that infectious …
