Optimization Of The Split-Spinach Aptamer For Monitoring Contiguous Rna Nanoparticle Assembly, Jack M. O'Hara
Optimization Of The Split-Spinach Aptamer For Monitoring Contiguous Rna Nanoparticle Assembly, Jack M. O'Hara
Honors Projects
The emerging field of RNA nanotechnology takes advantage of the RNA’s ability to self-assemble into exquisite structures. As nanoparticle design continues to advance and move into increasingly complex biological systems, tools to monitor their assembly and location will be of great importance. Here, a split-aptamer system is used to monitor assembly of a six-membered nanoring based on fluorescence feedback of a fluorophore. First, the split-aptamer is designed into two of the six pieces of the ring. Through mutation and deletion, we optimize the fluorescence feedback established when a six membered nanoparticle assembles, compared to partial assembly. We demonstrate that with …

Background: Obesity and overweight are accompanied with several different chronic diseases. Overweight and obesity can be measured by using body mass index (BMI) and is also used widely as an index of relative adiposity among any population. The aim of the study is to evaluate the prevalence of overweight and obesity among general population in Al-Kharj, Saudi Arabia.
Methods: Cross-sectional analysis was undertaken from a representative sample (N = 1019) of the Al Kharj population. Anthropometric measurements including the waist circumference (in centimeters), height (in meters), and weight (in kilograms) of the subjects were undertaken by means of standard apparatus. …

Mother Nature is our greatest teacher in the lesson of patience and new growth. She makes us wait for the sweet moments, but when they come how lucky we are to bear witness to her beauty. She renews life, and breaths fresh air into the dead leaves that winter has plastered onto the ground. She reminds us that with death, comes more vibrant and boisterous life. We just need to sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.

My Boompa was my mother's father, and my beloved grandfather. He passed away this April just after his 85th birthday. He, and the rest of the family, thought he would make it to at least 100. Boompa was one of the greatest people I will ever meet. Yea, sure, a lot of people say that, but I really mean it. He was the most kind, genuine, empathetic, hardworking man, always taking care of others first. This photo is a picture of the eucalyptus and pussy willows that were in the floral arrangement that laid over his coffin during his services. …

For us to truly succeed in our chosen work of helping and healing, we must succeed in listening deeply to ourselves and to others--listening to the voices of our hearts. Without this wholeness, we become shells of ourselves and cannot be fully present for others in their healing. I wrote this poem in celebration of my best friend and partner, Beth. During our 43 years together, our oneness has given me the courage and creativity needed to work in the service of others far beyond what I could have ever achieved alone. She has helped me to laugh and to …

Adult Vaccination Rates In The Severely Mentally Ill Population: An Improvement Project In An Outpatient Setting In Utah, Nathalia H. Williams, Leslie Miles, Beth Luthy, Lacey Eden
Student Works
Background: Adults who suffer with severe and persistent mental illness (SPMI) rarely access medical care to address basic medical needs, so they are subsequently less likely to receive preventive vaccines. The aim of this project was to increase the rate of vaccines among the SPMI population. This project started in 2011 and still is ongoing. It took place in an outpatient community mental health center (CMHC) which serves about 4,200 SPMI clients. Personnel managing the project included registered nurses from the local health department, staff from the CMHC, and volunteer nursing students.
Methods: A review of the literature identified a …

Skill learning involves the formation of stable motor patterns. In musical and athletic 3 training, however, these stable patterns can also impede the attainment of higher levels 4 of performance, and hence constitute a motor habit. We developed an experimental 5 paradigm to induce a specific motor pattern in a sequence production task and 6 investigated how it affected subsequent optimization over a 3-week training period. 7 Participants initially practiced small segments of 2 to 3 finger movements, which were 8 then combined to form longer sequences. This initial training induced a persistent 9 chunking behavior, with shorter inter-press-intervals within …

Treatment Of Obstructive Sleep Apnea With Maxillo-Mandibular Advancement Surgery: Evaluation And Predictors Of Success, Daniel Taub, Dmd, Md, Michael Courtney, Dmd, Md, Karl Doghramji, Md
Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Posters
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a well-recognized disease entity affecting approximately 2% to 4% of the population. Maxillomandibular advancement (MMA) surgery is a highly successful surgical alternative to poorly tolerated CPAP therapy and achieves a success rate of 89% in the current literature. Our present study evaluates the effectiveness of MMA surgery in the treatment of patients with moderate to severe OSA based on Shers criteria of 50% reduction in AHI and AHI < 20. Radiographic and clinical treatment variables were evaluated in determining predictors of success for MMA in individuals with OSA.

Does Transition From Cpap To Bipap Improve Symptoms Of Aerophagia?, Kathy Tran, Do, Karl Doghramji, Md
Department of Sleep Medicine Posters
Introduction
Adherence to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy has been an ongoing dilemma in obstructive sleep apnea patients and up to 83% of patients are noncompliant. It is believed that mask discomfort or pressure intolerance are the major causes. Aerophagia, or “air swallowing” may be an under-recognized and insidious cause for CPAP nonadherence. Patients generally complain of belching, bloating, abdominal pain and distention. Some studies have reported worsening gastrointestinal reflux symptoms from PAP-induced aerophagia. Although bi-level positive airway pressure (BIPAP) is often utilized in such circumstances, this practice had not been examined. We hypothesized that transitioning patients from CPAP …

Design, Construction, And Characterization Of The University Of South Florida Wind Tunnel, Jason S. Garcia
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Much of the aerosol research completed at the University of South Florida has revolved around evaluating industrial hygiene equipment and instrumentation in environmental chambers. Data collected during these studies has provided valuable baseline data on equipment and instrument performance under calm air conditions. A newly constructed wind tunnel now allows researchers to evaluate industrial hygiene instruments under moving air conditions. Because the wind tunnel is capable of producing wind velocities that a worker could encounter in the occupational setting, researchers may gain insight into instrument performance under simulated field conditions. Because aerosols can be introduced into the new wind tunnel …

A New Benchmarking Methodology To Monitor Industry's Investment In Community-Based Obesity Prevention And Food Access Initiatives: Gaps And Opportunities, Olivia Barata Cavalcanti
Dissertations and Theses
Background:
Despite increased public health efforts and investment in obesity prevention, obesity continues to be a growing problem in the United States.1 Excess weight increases the risk for a series of correlated diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, hyperinsulinemia, hypertension, dyslipidemia, joint abnormalities, polycystic ovarian syndrome, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, sleep disturbances and a decreased life span.2–9
Traditional interventions to improve nutrition or decrease obesity have not achieved the desired success so far because obesity is a complex problem, involving a vast number of factors, sectors and actors that influence individuals’ energy balance.10,11 To achieve change in …

Inertial Sensor-Based Variables Are Indicators Of Frailty And Adverse Post-Operative Outcomes In Cardiovascular Disease Patients, Rahul Soangra, Thurmon E. Lockhart
Physical Therapy Faculty Articles and Research
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) patients with intrinsic cardiac cause for falling have been found to be frail and submissive to morbidity and mortality as post-operative outcomes. In these older CVD patients, gait speed is conjectured by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) as an independent predictor of post-operative morbidity and mortality. However, this guideline by STS has not been studied adequately with a large sample size; rather it is based largely on expert opinions of cardiac surgeons and researchers. Although one’s gait speed is not completely associated with one’s risk of falls, gait speed is a quick robust measure to classify …
