Clostridium Difficile Infection, Jacobina A. Adamu Jul 2018

Clostridium Difficile Infection, Jacobina A. Adamu

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) refers to bacterium that infects the gut thereby causing diarrhea (Luo & Barlam, 2018). This infection is common among people who have used antibiotics for treatment. There is a growing consensus in literature that the infection of the intestines with Clostridium difficile infection is the fastest growing healthcare issue not only in the United States but globally. Millions of Americans are infected with this bacterium, causing major concerns in the healthcare system. In addition, it is worth noting that Clostridium difficile infection is a burdensome healthcare condition given the fact that it costs the healthcare system …

Complexities And Challenges Of Nonduality, Elizabeth Stephens Jul 2018

Complexities And Challenges Of Nonduality, Elizabeth Stephens

CONSCIOUSNESS: Ideas and Research for the Twenty-First Century

States of consciousness referred to as nonduality, awakening, enlightenment, moksha, peak experience, unitive states, or void states, among other terms, have garnered increasing secular attention and have become a topic of psychological and neuroscientific research. A review of the literature revealed many challenges to studying this set of states, such as inconsistent conceptualizations, a variety of models and theories, and conflicting descriptions indicating that the actual experience may not live up to the superlative descriptions found in historical texts or the expectations put forth by nondual teachers. A great deal more empirical research on this topic is needed, and researchers …

Query-Constraint-Based Mining Of Association Rules For Exploratory Analysis Of Clinical Datasets In The National Sleep Research Resource, Rashmie Abeysinghe, Licong Cui

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Background: Association Rule Mining (ARM) has been widely used by biomedical researchers to perform exploratory data analysis and uncover potential relationships among variables in biomedical datasets. However, when biomedical datasets are high-dimensional, performing ARM on such datasets will yield a large number of rules, many of which may be uninteresting. Especially for imbalanced datasets, performing ARM directly would result in uninteresting rules that are dominated by certain variables that capture general characteristics.

Methods: We introduce a query-constraint-based ARM (QARM) approach for exploratory analysis of multiple, diverse clinical datasets in the National Sleep Research Resource (NSRR). QARM enables rule mining on …

Radial Artery Injury With Attempted Intravenous Catheterization On The Dorsal Hand: A Case Report., Yusuf Alimi, Joe Iwanaga, Rod J Oskouian, Marios Loukas, R Shane Tubbs

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Intravenous (IV) access on the dorsum of the hand is of high clinical significance. As it is possible for an arterial injury during IV access on the dorsum of the hand to occur, clinicians and healthcare providers should be cognizant of regional anatomy and anatomical variations during IV placement so as to prevent injuries to the radial artery. We report a case of an injury to the radial artery with an attempted hand IV placement in a cadaver and suggest possible ways to prevent this complication.

Jurnal Keperawatan Indonesia

Indonesia is the fifth largest producer of cigarettes and has the third highest number of smokers in the world. This has potential biological, psychological, and social consequences. The aims of this study were to investigate the effects of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) on smoking behavior and anxiety. Quasi-experimental non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. A total of 80 respondents were selected at random from 10 districts in proportion to the number of smokers in each district. Respondents completed questionnaires and received a course of CBT conducted over five meetings. There was a significant decrease smoking behavior and anxiety (p< 0.05) in the intervention group. Smoking behavior, nicotine dependence, and anxiety in male heads of family who smoke and who received CBT were significantly lower than in control group. The decreases in smoking behavior and anxiety were significantly correlated (p< 0.05). The study reveals, CBT can effectively change smoking habits as well as reduce anxiety.

Aortic Aneurysms, Trevor Cowles

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

An aortic aneurysm is an abnormal bulge that occurs in the wall of the major blood vessel (aorta) that carries blood from your heart to your body. Aortic aneurysms can occur anywhere in your aorta and may be tube-shaped (fusiform) or round (saccular). This poster is about the pathophysiology of how these abnormal bulges occur. It also covers the significance of the pathophysiology along with the clinical picture of what to expect if an individual experiences these mechanisms behind the pathophysiology.

Exploring The Characteristics And Context That Allow Master Adaptive Learners To Thrive, William B. Cutrer, Holly G. Atkinson, Erica Friedman, Nicole Deiorio, Larry D. Gruppen, Michael Dekhtyar, Martin Pusic

Publications and Research

Because change is ubiquitous in healthcare, clinicians must constantly make adaptations to their practice to provide the highest quality care to patients. In a previous article, Cutrer et al. described a metacognitive approach to learning based on self-regulation, which facilitates the development of the Master Adaptive Learner (MAL). The MAL process helps individuals to cultivate and demonstrate adaptive expertise, allowing them to investigate new concepts (learn) and create new solu- tions (innovate). An individual’s ability to learn in this manner is driven by several internal characteristics and is also impacted by numerous aspects of their context. In this article, the …

Role Of Hox Genes In Stem Cell Differentiation And Cancer., Seema Bhatlekar, Jeremy Z Fields, Bruce M. Boman Jul 2018

Role Of Hox Genes In Stem Cell Differentiation And Cancer., Seema Bhatlekar, Jeremy Z Fields, Bruce M. Boman

Kimmel Cancer Center Papers, Presentations, and Grand Rounds

HOX genes encode an evolutionarily conserved set of transcription factors that control how the phenotype of an organism becomes organized during development based on its genetic makeup. For example, in bilaterian-type animals, HOX genes are organized in gene clusters that encode anatomic segment identity, that is, whether the embryo will form with bilateral symmetry with a head (anterior), tail (posterior), back (dorsal), and belly (ventral). Although HOX genes are known to regulate stem cell (SC) differentiation and HOX genes are dysregulated in cancer, the mechanisms by which dysregulation of HOX genes in SCs causes cancer development is not fully understood. …

Another "D" In Mudpiles? A Review Of Diet-Associated Nondiabetic Ketoacidosis., Waqas Ullah, Mohsin Hamid, Hafez Mohammad Ammar Abdullah, Mamoon Ur Rashid, Faisal Inayat

Abington Jefferson Health Papers

Ketogenic diet or very-low-carbohydrate diet gained widespread popularity in the 1990s due to their favorable effects on weight loss and diabetes among others with good short-term safety data. People on ketogenic diets exist in a state of "dietary ketosis" in which the body production of ketone is equal to consumption and no harmful effects of ketonemia occur. However, in face of stress, the harmless "dietary ketosis" can lead to profound acid-base disturbances due to massive overproduction of ketone bodies that overwhelms the acid buffer system of the body. A handful of case reports have been published on this topic calling …

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports

Metastatic melanoma represents a challenging clinical situation and, until relatively recently, there was an absence of effective treatment options. However, in 2011, the advanced melanoma treatment landscape was revolutionised with the approval of the anti-cytotoxic T-lymphocyte-associated protein-4 checkpoint inhibitor ipilimumab and the selective BRAF kinase inhibitor vemurafenib, both of which significantly improved overall survival. Since then, availability of new immunotherapies, especially the anti-programmed death-1 checkpoint inhibitors, as well as other targeted therapies, have further improved outcomes for patients with advanced melanoma. Seven years on from the first approval of these novel therapies, evidence for the use of various immune-based and …

Evaluating Feasibility Of Blockchain Application For Dscsa Compliance, Tracie Scott, Armand L. Post, Johnny Quick, Sohail Rafiqi

SMU Data Science Review

Abstract. We evaluated the feasibility of using a blockchain technology to create a traceability solution for pharmaceutical drugs that would promote compliance with recent legislation. Counterfeit and other illegitimate pharmaceutical drugs threaten patient safety, drug efficacy, and patient trust. The purpose of the Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA) is to greatly reduce distribution of illegitimate drugs by requiring all pharmaceuticals to be serialized and traceable from the manufacturer through the supply chain to the dispenser. A software application to serialize and track pharmaceuticals must overcome numerous obstacles. In particular, the solution must provide a high degree of trust while …

Trauma Recovery: A Heroic Journey, Brenda Keck, Lisa Compton, Corie Schoeneberg, Tucker Compton

Heroism Science

Trauma survivors who choose to enter into trauma recovery may be viewed as individuals embarking on a hero’s journey. Historically, many of the coping strategies utilized by individuals who are experiencing post-traumatic stress have been viewed as inherently disordered and personally dysfunctional. An alternative perspective of these behaviors calls for an examination of strengths present within trauma survivors, suggesting a reframe of their symptomology as ingenuity in coping during adverse circumstances and an appreciation for the difficulty of living with traumatic memories. This article highlights the challenging process of trauma recovery as it parallels Campbell’s (1949) metaphor of the hero’s …

Narcolepsy Or Gelineau Syndrome, Tammy Rainey

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

According to the U.S. Library of Medicine (2018), 1 in 2000 individuals in the United States and Western Europe are affected by narcolepsy, or Gelineau syndrome. Those with mild symptoms may not be diagnosed, and worse yet, those seeking medical attention may be misdiagnosed, especially in children and adolescents. Further research of the disease revealed misdiagnosis is a common theme with narcolepsy. Often, individuals are diagnosed with emotional or psychiatric disorders and prescribed inappropriate medications. “Lack of clinical awareness about different presentations in children and adolescents often leads to misdiagnosis of narcolepsy as schizophrenia, epilepsy, and other neurological disorders” often …

Etidronate Prevents, But Does Not Reverse, Ectopic Mineralization In A Mouse Model Of Pseudoxanthoma Elasticum (, Qiaoli Li, Joshua Kingman, John P Sundberg, Michael A Levine, Jouni Uitto

Faculty Research 2018

Pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) and generalized arterial calcification of infancy (GACI) are heritable disorders manifesting with ectopic tissue mineralization. Most cases of PXE and some cases of GACI are caused by mutations in the ABCC6 gene, resulting in reduced plasma pyrophosphate (PPi) levels. There is no effective treatment for these disorders. It has been suggested that administration of bisphosphonates, stable and non-hydrolyzable PPi analogs, could counteract ectopic mineralization in these disorders. In this study we tested the potential efficacy of etidronate, a first generation bisphosphonate, on ectopic mineralization in the muzzle skin of Abcc6-/- mice, a model of PXE. The …

The Influence Of Induced Anxiety On The P3 Event Related Brain Potentials Of Athletes And Novices In A Go/Nogo Task, Conley Waters, Keri Weed

Journal of the South Carolina Academy of Science

An elite athlete employs complex skills during competition that have been learned and perfected over long periods of training. Skills that include kicking, throwing, and hitting are complicated and require heightened motor control, focus, and attention. Attention allocation and motor control may be evaluated by the P3 wave, a neurophysiological measure of cognitive control. The Go/NoGo task is often used to elicit a P3 wave by averaging electroencephalogram readings from frequent stimuli that require a response (Go) and infrequent stimuli that require response inhibition (NoGo). Anxiety may also affect performance, both on the athletic field and in the research laboratory. …

Wide Educational Disparities In Young Adult Cardiovascular Health, Elizabeth M. Lawrence, Robert A. Hummer, Benjamin W. Domingue, Kathleen Mullan Harris

Sociology Faculty Research

Widening educational differences in overall health and recent stagnation in cardiovascular disease mortality rates highlight the critical need to describe and understand educational disparities in cardiovascular health (CVH) among U.S. young adults. We use two data sets representative of the U.S. population to examine educational disparities in CVH among young adults (24–34) coming of age in the 21st century: the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2005–2010; N= 689) and the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (2007–2008; N=11,200). We employ descriptive statistics and regression analysis. The results show that fewer than one in four young adults had …
