The research question posed is, how does relative VO2 of males or females compare to each other? Research has shown that males will have an overall higher VO2 than females. Also, trained individuals will have a higher VO2 than those who are untrained. The purpose of this study is conduct VO2 max tests on trained and untrained males and female to observe the differences in VO2. If the subject is a male, then the VO2 will be higher than the females regardless of training.

In this experiment, four young adults with various anthropometric measurements completed RMR tests. The purpose of this experiment is to find to what extent RMR increases in relation to FFM, BMI, height and weight. It is hypothesized that a higher RMR is associated with a higher FFM, and RMR will not indicate a strong correlation with the other variables.

Preliminary studies suggest that the nitrosamine N-nitrosoatrazine (NNAT) is teratogenic and mutagenic. We hypothesized that the embryos exposed to NNAT would have higher mortality and lower growth rate compared to unexposed embryos. In this study, we evaluated growth and mortality in chick embryos after exposure to NNAT dissolved in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). The study was divided into three experiments depending treatment design. First, the effect of DMSO on embryo growth and survival was tested. Second, we compared growth and survival between embryos treated with DMSO, 50:50 DMSO:water and NNAT at 0.245 µmol/l. Finally, we compared growth and survival between …

Yet no study to date has administered the Young's Internet Addiction Test (IAT) in the United States, nor has the reliability been assessed in a U.S. population. Background: Uncertainty continues to surround mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) diagnosis, symptoms, prognosis, and outcome due in part to a lack of objective biomarkers of injury and recovery. As mTBI gains recognition as a serious public health epidemic, there is need to identify risk factors, diagnostic tools, and imaging biomarkers to help guide diagnosis and management. Methods: One hundred and eleven patients (15-50 years old) were enrolled acutely after mTBI and followed with up to four standardized serial assessments over 3 months. A significant relationship between criminal behavior and substance abuse exists, which leads to a large proportion of individuals in the prison system who meet criteria for a substance use disorder. This review compares empirically-supported treatments for substance use disorder to current substance abuse treatment programs offered in United States prisons. A review of current literature indicates that Therapeutic Communities are the most common form of substance abuse treatment provided, and often these are combined with Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy groups. Cysteine Residues Contribute To The Dimerization And Enzymatic Activity Of Human Nuclear Dutp Nucleotidohydrolase (Ndut)., Shawna M Rotoli, Julia L Jones, Salvatore J Caradonna

dUTPase is an enzyme found in all organisms that have thymine as a constituent of DNA. Through evolution, humans have two major isoforms of dUTPase: a mitochondrial (mDut) and a nuclear (nDut) isoform. The nuclear isoform of dUTPase is a 164-amino-acids-long protein containing three cysteine residues. nDut's starting methionine is post-translationally cleaved, leaving four unique amino acids on its amino-terminus including one cysteine residue (C3). These are not present in the mitochondrial isoform (mDut). Using mass spectrometry analyses of recombinant dUTPase constructs, we have discovered an intermolecular disulfide bridge between cysteine-3 of each nDut monomer. We have found that these …

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether self-reports of disaster-related psychological distress predict older adults' health care utilization during the year after Hurricane Sandy, which hit New Jersey on October 29, 2012.

METHODS: Respondents were from the ORANJ BOWL Study, a random-digit dialed sample from New Jersey recruited from 2006 to 2008. Medicare hospital, emergency department (ED) and outpatient claims data from 2012 and 2013 were matched to 1607 people age 65 and older in 2012 who responded to follow-up surveys conducted from July 2013 to July 2015 to determine their hurricane-related experiences.

RESULTS: In total, 7% (107) of respondents reported they experienced …

Rural areas have experienced higher than average healthcare workforce problems, especially concerning limited access to mental health services. Telepsychiatry may provide at least a partial solution, as it has improved access and quality of care available in rural environments despite implementation problems. As technology continues to advance access, telepsychiatry will also need to strengthen making access more readily available. Additional research is required to identify modalities and diverse methods that can be used to increase access to mental health services further and improve outcomes in rural and underserved areas.

The 340B Drug Pricing Program, created by Congress in 1992 through the Veterans Health Care Act, has provided discounted drug prices to hospitals and other health care organizations serving a wide population of low-income patients. Some 340B programs use contract pharmacies, an arrangement whereby the hospital or health care organization signs a contract directly with a pharmacy to provide covered pharmacy services at discounted prices.

Objective: The project adopted technology that teaches medical and other health professions students to be empathetic with older adults, through virtual reality (VR) software that allows them to simulate being a patient with age-related diseases, and to familiarize medical students with information resources related to the health of older adults.

Methods: The project uses an application that creates immersive VR experiences for training of the workforce for aging services. Users experience age-related conditions such as macular degeneration and high-frequency hearing loss from the patient’s perspective. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS), the Joint Commission (TJC), Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) have all highlighted readmissions as an issue in healthcare that needs to be addressed. Many of these organizations have piloted programs which aim to decrease readmissions.

The MAP (Medication Focus, Access Assistance, and Provider Collaboration) program seeks to decrease the readmission rate of high-risk patients. The purpose of this study is to identify techniques that could be developed into a resource for counselors and other professionals who assist college students in dealing effectively with adversity. In a series of four surveys, 200 people were asked to participate. These included professional counselors and ministers both on and off campus, as well as directors in Student Affairs, such as those in student support services and student life. To accomplish this, questionnaires were developed to identify and allow for tabulation of the counseling techniques most commonly used for students dealing with adversity by those working with college students. …

The Reach, Effectiveness, Adoption, Implementation, and Maintenance (REAIM) evaluation framework, as first introduced by Glasgow, Vogt, and Boles (1999), offers a straightforward method for evaluating Extension related programs. In this study, the RE-AIM framework is used to evaluate the Kentucky Association of 4-H Extension Agents (KAE4-HA) annual conference by examining pre-existing organizational data and records that include the results from KAE4-HA post-conference surveys that had never been reviewed as part of a comprehensive program evaluation.

Children with medical complexity require unique care, specialized attention, and a dedicated team to meet the needs of the patient & caregivers. Drug-therapy related problems in complex, chronic conditions influence financial, institutional, and patient outcomes. The addition of a pharmacist allows for collaboration and delivery of comprehensive medication management in order to provide value-added medication services to optimize complex therapeutic regimens and patient outcomes through evidence-based practice, medication adherence, medication use coordination, and medication safety processes.
