Faculty To Faculty Incivility In Iowa Nursing Education Programs, Candace Chihak

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Uncivil work relationships are common in several professions, including nursing. Experiences of incivility within nursing education have been well described in the relationships between students, students to faculty, and faculty to students, however, there is less empirical evidence on the presence of incivility between nursing faculty. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to identify the perception of incivility in faculty-to-faculty relationships in nursing education. Additionally, this paper will look for relationships between nurse educators and their intentions to stay within higher education. Methods: Nursing faculty from one Midwest state were surveyed utilizing the Workplace Incivility Civility Survey (WICS). Additionally, …

Isolated hemimegalencephaly (iHME) is a rare form of congenital malformation of cortical development characterized by enlargement of all or part of one cerebral hemisphere. It typically presents with intractable seizures, developmental delay, contralateral hemiparesis, and hemianopia. We report a case of an 18-month-old girl who presented first with focal seizures at tenth day of life, with no other physical or behavioral abnormality. Initial EEG showed excessive sharp EEG transients more over the right hemisphere; repeated EEG showed spikes, polyspikes, sharps, and slow wave discharges predominately over the right hemisphere. MRI of the brain showed asymmetric enlargement of the right cerebral …

Hepatobiliary (HPB) malignancies have some of highest incidences in East and Southeast Asia and the management of patients undergoing HPB surgeries have yet to be standardized. With improved neurosurgery techniques for intracranial aneurysms and tumors, neurosurgeries (NS) can be expected to increase. Elective surgeries account for far more operations than emergencies surgeries. Thus, with potentially increased numbers of elective HPB and NS, this study seeks to explore perioperative factors associated with prolonged LOS for …

Non-Invasive Mitochondrial Modulation With Near-Infrared Light Reduces Brain Injury After Stroke, Christos Dionisos Strubakos Jan 2018

Non-Invasive Mitochondrial Modulation With Near-Infrared Light Reduces Brain Injury After Stroke, Christos Dionisos Strubakos

Wayne State University Dissertations

Acute ischemic stroke is a debilitating disease that causes significant brain injury.

While rapid restoration of blood flow is critical to salvage the ischemic brain, reperfusion

of tissue can further drive brain damage by inducing generation of mitochondrial reactive

oxygen species (Chouchani et al., 2014a). Recent studies by our group found that noninvasive

mitochondrial modulation (NIMM) with near-infrared (NIR) light can limit the

production of reactive oxygen species following global brain ischemia (T. H. Sanderson

et al., 2018). NIR interacts with the rate limiting step of the mitochondrial electron

transport chain (ETC), cytochrome c oxidase (COX), and modulates mitochondrial

respiration. …

Explaining Homegrown Western Jihadists: The Importance Of Western Foreign Policy, Clark R. Mccauley Jan 2018

Explaining Homegrown Western Jihadists: The Importance Of Western Foreign Policy, Clark R. Mccauley

Psychology Faculty Research and Scholarship

In both the United States and Europe, explanations of homegrown radicalization emphasize the power of Salafi-jihadist ideology and Muslim experiences of discrimination and socioeconomic deprivation in Western countries. Polls of U.S. and European Muslims, and case histories of jihadist plots for attacks in the United States, indicate that another source of homegrown radicalization is Western foreign policy, especially Western interventions in predominantly Muslim countries. Poll results support a two-factor model in which seeing the war on terrorism as a war on Islam is predicted by both perceived discrimination and grievance related to Western foreign policy. Consistent with this model, UK …

Outcomes In Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator Flap And Implant-Based Reconstruction: Does Age Really Matter?, Lauren V. Kuykendall, Angie Zhang, Bugra Tugertimur, Sara Bijan, Corin Agoris, Ambuj Kumar, Deniz Dayicioglu

Surgery Faculty Publications

Despite the growing elderly population, there is limited research specific to this demographic concerning breast reconstruction (BR). Lack of evidence-based BR recommendations in older populations may contribute to misconceptions and subsequent underutilization of BR, especially autologous BR. Patients who received either deep inferior epigastric perforator (DIEP) flap BR or tissue expander/implant (TE/I) BR by a single surgeon between July 2011 and July 2015 were surveyed postoperatively by using the psychometrically validated BREAST-Q questionnaire to determine patient satisfaction. Patients were categorized into younger and older cohorts based on median age (55 years) and further stratified based on the type of reconstruction. …
