Brain connectomics has expanded from histological assessment of axonal projection connectivity (APC) to encompass resting state functional connectivity (RS-FC). RS-FC analyses are efficient for whole-brain mapping, but attempts to explain aspects of RS-FC (e.g., interhemispheric RS-FC) based on APC have been only partially successful. Neuroimaging with hemoglobin alone lacks specificity for determining how activity in a population of cells contributes to RS-FC. Wide-field mapping of optogenetically defined connectivity could provide insights into the brain's structure-function relationship. We combined optogenetics with optical intrinsic signal imaging to create an efficient, optogenetic effective connectivity (Opto-EC) mapping assay. We examined EC patterns of excitatory …

Synthetic Investigation Of Natural Products Causing Dopaminergic Neurodegeneration, Michael John Cunningham
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The terrestrial organisms Streptomyces venezuelae and Rhaponticum repens produce toxic secondary metabolites that likely function as chemical deterrents. The polyketide SV-6 from S. venezuelae and the sesquiterpene lactone repin from R. repens both produce dose-dependent and selective degeneration of dopaminergic neurons. These molecules represent two possible tools that can be used to explore chemotoxic induction of Parkinson’s disease. In the case of SV-6, a newly isolated metabolite, total synthesis was undertaken to confirm its structure and biological activity. The natural product was produced from methacrolein and Roche ester starting materials that were elaborated to their respective fragments, a vinyl iodide …

Effect Of Maternal Blood Heavy Metal Level On Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor And Pregnancy Outcomes Among Myanmar Migrants In Samut Sakhon Province, Thailand, Ye Htet Zaw
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
BACKGROUND: Lead, mercury, cadmium, and arsenic are the priority heavy metals of major public health concern in developing countries. Thailand is a newly industrialized country raising high human workloads of migrant workers form neighbored countries, mostly Myanmar. Exposure to these metals can cause cognitive impairment and depressive disorders through an effect on brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which is an important biomarker of pregnancy. Pregnancy outcomes including preeclampsia, preterm birth and low birth weight are major burdens for maternal and child health. Although a number of prior studies have examined the effects of heavy metals on pregnancy, there are few studies …

Diagnostic Performance Of The Faas Stroke Screening Tool Faas Stroke Screening Tool In Patients Who Presented To The Emergency Room With Neurological Symptoms, Warongporn Phuenpathom
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Background: Rapid screening and intervention are the keys to successful early treatment of stroke. In Thailand, the conventional FAST stroke screening tool has generally been used by triage nurses to promptly detect acute stroke. However, the FAST score has a limitation in detecting posterior circulation stroke. Previous studies showed that adding ataxia could increase the sensitivity of posterior circulation stroke detection. Therefore, we studied the performance of a new stroke screening tool, the FAAS score, among acute ischemic stroke patients. Objectives: To evaluate the diagnostic performance of the FAAS score and compare the diagnostic performance between FAAS and the conventional …

Vitamin Fortification Of Milled Rice: A New Approach To Address Micronutrient Malnutrition, Drexel H. Camacho
Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)
To address micronutrient deficiencies in the susceptible sector of society, it is recommended to fortify the commercial milled rice with vitamins using the new technique of fortification. The simple approach, which involves rice surface modification and vitamin absorption, is deemed economical compared to traditional fortification processes. Moreover, the susceptibility of losing vitamins due to washing processes is resolved in this improved grain fortification as ~90% of the vitamins are retained. The results shown in this study indicate the successful fortification of vitamins on rice and that fortification is more pronounced when the grain undergoes sonication process. As the staple food …

Central alveolar hypoventilation disorders denote conditions resulting from underlying neurologic disorders affecting the sensors, the central controller, or the integration of those signals leading to insufficient ventilation and reduction in partial pressures of oxygen. We report a patient who presented with a left lateral medullary ischemic stroke after aneurysm repair who subsequently developed a rare complication of CAH. Increased awareness of this condition’s clinical manifestations is crucial to make an accurate diagnosis and understand its complications and prognosis.

Despite extensive research efforts, drug addiction persists as a largely unmet medical need. Perhaps the biggest challenge for treating addiction is the high rate of recidivism. While many factors can promote relapse in abstinent drug users, the contribution of stress is particularly problematic, as stress is uncontrollable and pervasive in the lives of those struggling with addiction. Thus, understanding the neurocircuitry that underlies the influence of stress on drug seeking is critical for guiding treatment. Preclinical research aimed at defining this neurocircuitry has, in part, relied upon the use of experimental approaches that allow visualization of cellular and circuit activity …
