Pathophysiolgoly Of Atrial Fibrillation, Abby Tener Jan 2018

Pathophysiolgoly Of Atrial Fibrillation, Abby Tener

Nursing Student Class Projects (Formerly MSN)

According to Shah (2013), Atrial Fibrillation is known as the most common irregular heart beat. Because atrial fibrillation causes a quivering motion of the atria, it causes pooling of blood in the atria. This pooling of blood can lead to the development of blood clots. When a patient develops blood clots, the blood clot can dislodge and cause a stroke. Atrial fibrillation is the leading cause of ischemic stroke and when a patient meets a certain criteria, anticoagulation should be initiated. The clinician should also be aware of the patient's risk for bleeding as this can complicate treatment in protecting …

Essential Components Of Participation For An Exercise Program For Underserved, Older, African-American Females, Marina Meinert Jan 2018

Essential Components Of Participation For An Exercise Program For Underserved, Older, African-American Females, Marina Meinert

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Physical activity (PA) is beneficial to people of all ages and ethnicities. Regular physical activity can reduce the risk of multiple chronic diseases, improve mood and sleep and allows your body to function better overall (CDC, 2018). However, populations that are more vulnerable to adverse health risks may benefit more than others from regular physical activity. This study was designed to identify the motivating factors for physical activity in a sample of older, African-American women of lower socioeconomic status (SES). This particular subgroup was chosen because of their increased risk of obesity and cardiovascular disease due to unhealthy lifestyle factors, …

Investigation Of The Effects Of Cobimetinib On Neurofibromatosis Type 2 Model Schwannoma Cells, Konstantin Brnjos Jan 2018

Investigation Of The Effects Of Cobimetinib On Neurofibromatosis Type 2 Model Schwannoma Cells, Konstantin Brnjos

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Neurofibromatosis type two (NF2) is a genetic disorder predisposing those affected to the development of multiple benign tumors in their central and peripheral nervous systems. This is due to the absence of the tumor suppressor protein merlin, which is encoded by the NF2 gene. In nearly all NF2 cases, patients present with bilateral schwannomas of the vestibulocochlear nerve, in addition to other schwannomas throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems, as well as meningiomas and ependymomas. Currently, no therapeutic alternatives to surgical removal and radiation therapy are available for NF2 patients. This study investigated cobimetinib, an inhibitor of the often-deregulated …

Effects Of Music Therapy On Individuals With Dementia: An Intergrative Literature Review, Liani Sanchez

The purpose of this integrative review was to examine the effects of music therapy, a complementary intervention, on individuals with dementia. Peer-reviewed journals were retrieved from MEDLINE, CINAHL, CINAHL Plus with Full Text, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Music Index to evaluate their relevance to music therapy use in people diagnosed with dementia. English and Spanish-language research articles published from 2000-2017 were included for the review (n=15). Change In Working Length At Different Stages Of Instrumentation As A Function Of Canal Curvature, Mei Tang, Garry L. Myers, Richard D. Archer, Al M. Best

Graduate Research Posters

The aim of this study was to determine the change in working length (∆WL) before and after coronal flaring and after complete rotary instrumentation as a function of canal curvature. One mesiobuccal or mesiolingual canal from each of 43 extracted molars had coronal standardization and access performed. Once the access was completed, canal preparation was accomplished using Gates Glidden drills for coronal flaring and EndoSequence files for rotary instrumentation. WLs were obtained at 3 time points: pre-instrumentation (unflared), mid-instrumentation (flared) and post-instrumentation (concluded). Measurements were made via direct visualization (DV) and the CanalPro apex locator (EM) in triplicate by a …

Bsn Students' Opinions Of Mentally Ill Patients, Kavika Chugh Jan 2018

Bsn Students' Opinions Of Mentally Ill Patients, Kavika Chugh

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Compassionate care, or humanism, should be available to all patients, but the stigma associated with mental illness is a barrier to many people receiving the appropriate care. Views held by Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) students can vary from custodial, or the belief in a traditional medical model which involved a highly controlled setting for all mentally ill patients, to humanistic, or viewing the hospital as a therapeutic community for the human needs of a patient. This study examines the views of BSN students before their psychiatric clinical experience through a pretest and post-test survey and analyzes for a …

A Cultural Competency Training Model For The Public Health Workforce: Public Health Cares, Hana E. Hinkle Jan 2018

A Cultural Competency Training Model For The Public Health Workforce: Public Health Cares, Hana E. Hinkle

Graduate Research Theses & Dissertations

Cultural competency training (CCT) programs are often used to train healthcare providers on the cultural needs and related healthcare disparities of patients. However, the current literature does not provide standardized best practice methods for CCT implementation, and CCT content is not consistent within healthcare disciplines and/or across disciplines (Beck & Boulton, 2012; Betancourt, Green, Carrillo, & Owusu Ananeh-Firempong, 2016; Crandall, George, Marion, & Davis, 2003; Lie, Lee-Rey, Gomez, Bereknyei, & Braddock, 2011). Additionally, current training programs do not typically address other factors of culturally appropriate care delivery in practice, such as provider bias. Current training programs also lack evaluation standards …

Surrogacy: Pathway To Parenthood, Rachel A. Joseph, Alexandria M. Rafanello, Cassidy J. Morris, Kerry F. Fleming

Nursing Faculty Publications

Assistive reproductive technology has progressed significantly over the past few decades. In spite of the advances, people may still resort to a surrogate for bearing and birthing a baby. Surrogacy, though an altruistic act, has been commercialized in the past few years, leading to emergence of several ethico-legal concerns. Nurses care for the surrogates, the infants, and the intended parents through their journey with sensitivity, advocacy, compassion, and confidentiality. This article intends to explore the implications of surrogacy to individuals, families, nations, and health care.

Self-Disclosure, Gender, And Patient Satisfaction In The Doctor-Patient Relationship, Khadiza Tul Jannat Jan 2018

Self-Disclosure, Gender, And Patient Satisfaction In The Doctor-Patient Relationship, Khadiza Tul Jannat

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

It has been well established that the doctor-patient relationship is integral for providing quality health care and sustaining patient satisfaction. Additionally, research has indicated that doctors' self-disclosure is considered as an essential interpersonal component of relational development. In terms of the doctor-patient interaction, previous research has produced numerous studies investigating the relationship between doctors' communication behaviors and patient satisfaction. Scholars have also explored how communication styles are associated with doctors' gender, and patient satisfaction. However, there is still a gap in the existing research concerning the connections between doctors' self-disclosure, gender, and patient satisfaction in doctor-patient interactions. My qualitative study …
