Assessment Of A Mouse Xenograft Model Of Primary Colorectal Cancer With Special Reference To Perfluorooctane Sulfonate, Jeffrey H. Wimsatt, Caitlin Montgomery, Laurel S. Thomas, Charity Savard, Rachel Tallman, Kim Innes, Nezar Jrebi

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Colorectal cancer ranks third among the most commonly diagnosed cancers in the United States. Current therapies have a range of side effects, and the development of a reliable animal model to speed the discovery of safe effective preventative therapies would be of great value. A cross-sectional study in a large Appalachian population recently showed an association between low circulating levels of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) and a reduced prevalence of colorectal cancer. A study using APCmin(C57BL/6J-ApcMin/J) mice prone to familial adenomatous polyposis found PFOS was protective when exposure occurred during tumor development. To test the possible benefit of PFOS on spontaneous …

Psychometric Properties Of The Difficulties In Emotion Regulation Scale (Ders) And Its Short Forms In Adults With Emotional Disorders, Lauren S. Hallion, Shari A. Steinmann, David F. Tolin, Gretchen J. Diefenbach

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Objective: The Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale (DERS) is a widely used self- report measure of subjective emotion ability, as defined by a prominent clinically derived model of emotion regulation (Gratz and Roemer, 2004). Although the DERS is often used in treatment and research settings for adults with emotional (i.e., anxiety, mood, obsessive-compulsive, or trauma-related) disorders, its psychometric properties are not well-characterized in this population.

Method: We examined the psychometric properties of the DERS and three popular short forms (DERS-16; DERS-18; and DERS-SF) in a large (N = 427) sample of treatment-seeking adults with one or more DSM-5 emotional disorders. …

Attitudes Regarding Physician-Assisted Suicide Among Minnesota Family Medicine Physicians, Lauren M. Cooke, Lindsay Emmerich, Sam Feyder

All Electronic Theses and Dissertations

An affinity for bioethics lead researchers to investigate the attitudes of physicians toward physician-assisted suicide amidst growing conversation regarding patient liberties. Physician-assisted suicide (PAS) refers to the prescription of a lethal dose of a drug to prematurely end a patient’s life (Gather & Vollmann, 2013). The purpose of this study was to understand the attitudes of physicians toward PAS and thus, predict how their approach to end-of-life issues will change under its legalization. A case-based survey was created to determine the relationship between physician age and support for access to PAS, patient diagnosis and support for access to PAS, physician …

Florida Orthodontists' Willingness To Provide A Human Papillomavirus Educational Intervention, Marc Edward Weber Jan 2018

Florida Orthodontists' Willingness To Provide A Human Papillomavirus Educational Intervention, Marc Edward Weber

Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Introduction: Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection with an estimated fourteen million new cases each year in the United States alone. HPV infections generally resolve with little or no incident, but persistent infections can lead to more serious sequelae such as oral and cervical cancers. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that all 11-12 year olds receive the HPV vaccine; yet, the prevalence of HPV vaccination in the U.S. population is far below the prevalence of routine childhood vaccinations. Clearly, there is a public health imperative to increase the HPV vaccination rate among American …

A Study Of The Relationship Between Mandibular Second Molar Impaction And Class Ii Malocclusions, Michael Wiernicki

Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Introduction: Detection of impacted teeth by the orthodontist is imperative for diagnosis and treatment planning. A tooth is impacted when it has arrested eruption due to the presence of a clinically or radiographically visible physical barrier in the path of eruption. The most commonly impacted teeth are third molars, followed by maxillary canines and mandibular second premolars. When referring to mandibular second molar (MM2) impaction, prevalence ranges from as low as 0.06-0.65%1-5, to as high as 1.36% and 1.8%. Numerous studies have identified etiologic risk factors for MM2 impaction, such as mesial crown angulation, dental crowding, morphological tooth anomalies, and …

Sympatho-Excitatory Response To Pulmonary Chemosensitive Spinal Afferent Activation In Anesthetized, Vagotomized Rats, Julia A. Shanks, Zhiqiu Xia, Steven J. Lisco, George J. Rozanski, Harold D. Schultz, Irving H. Zucker, Han-Jun Wang

Journal Articles: Cellular & Integrative Physiology

The sensory innervation of the lung is well known to be innervated by nerve fibers of both vagal and sympathetic origin. Although the vagal afferent innervation of the lung has been well characterized, less is known about physiological effects mediated by spinal sympathetic afferent fibers. We hypothesized that activation of sympathetic spinal afferent nerve fibers of the lung would result in an excitatory pressor reflex, similar to that previously characterized in the heart. In this study, we evaluated changes in renal sympathetic nerve activity (RSNA) and hemodynamics in response to activation of TRPV1-sensitive pulmonary spinal sensory fibers by agonist application …

Outcomes Of Family Presence During Resuscitation (Fpdr) In The Acute Care Setting: A Review Of The Literature, Audra M. Corn Jan 2018

Outcomes Of Family Presence During Resuscitation (Fpdr) In The Acute Care Setting: A Review Of The Literature, Audra M. Corn

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Family Presence During Resuscitation (FPDR) remains controversial and is not consistently implemented during resuscitation events or invasive procedures. Evidence has demonstrated positive outcomes produced by implementation of FPDR; such as, decreased rates of post-traumatic stress symptoms, decreased symptoms of anxiety, and depressive symptoms were not significantly different. Unfortunately, use of FPDR in the acute care setting is not widely accepted or readily implemented. The primary purpose of this integrative literature review is to evaluate the use of FPDR in the acute care setting. The secondary purpose is to evaluate the health care professional's level of perceived value associated with the …

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Objective

A paucity of corroborative psychological and psychiatric evidence may be inhibiting detec- tion of drug intoxication suicides in the United States. We evaluated the relative importance of suicide notes and psychiatric history in the classification of suicide by drug intoxication versus firearm (gunshot wound) plus hanging/suffocation—the other two major, but overtly violent methods.

Methods

This observational multilevel (individual/county), multivariable study employed a general- ized linear mixed model (GLMM) to analyze pooled suicides and undetermined intent deaths, as possible suicides, among the population aged 15 years and older in the 17 states participating in the National Violent Death Reporting System …
