Depressive symptoms are common in individuals with multiple sclerosis (MS), and are frequently exacerbated by pain; however, spiritual well-being may allow persons with MS to more effectively cope with pain-related deficits in physical and role functioning. We explored the associations between spiritual well-being, pain interference and depressive symptoms, assessing each as a potential mediator, in eighty-one patients being treated for MS, who completed self-report measures: Functional Assessment of Chronic Illness Therapy-Spiritual Well-Being Scale, Pain Effects Scale, and Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale Revised. At the bivariate level, spiritual well-being and its subscale of meaning and peace were negatively associated …

Opioid Exposed Mothers And Infants In Delaware: Clinical And Legal Considerations, Michele K. Savin, Msn, Nnp-Bc, David A. Paul, Md
College of Nursing Faculty Papers & Presentations
Drug use is on the rise in Delaware, as demonstrated by the continued increase in infants born with neonatal abstinence syndrome. Thoughful, evidence based, and coordinated approaches are necessary to impact this problem. There is solid evidence that mothers and infants who remain together have improved outcomes. Professional medical and nursing societies are unanimous in support of non-punitive approaches to care. Medical Professionals, legislators, and society in general would benefit from ongoing education on the addiction disease process in order to best care for the increasing number of mother/baby dyads with neonatal abstinence syndrome.

Mitigating Distortion Of Light-Polymerized Composite Trial Bases, Jon Patrick Irelan
Mitigating Distortion Of Light-Polymerized Composite Trial Bases, Jon Patrick Irelan
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Triad Visible Light Cure (VLC) Denture Base Material, a light-polymerizing resin material, is commonly used by clinicians to make trial bases during the fabrication of dentures and in planning the prosthetic and surgical rehabilitation of edentulous patients. A well-known drawback to this material, however, is its tendency to distort during the light-polymerization process. This distortion tends to occur most often towards the posterior aspect of the palate, and can negatively impact the bases ability to be retained through suction to the edentulous arch. The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether an experimental polymerization protocol can mitigate distortion during …

Torsion And Bending Properties Of Edgeendo Files, Chad Hansen
Torsion And Bending Properties Of Edgeendo Files, Chad Hansen
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Introduction: One important step of root canal therapy is the process of cleaning and shaping each canal. This process involves using endodontic rotary files combined with chemical irrigants to remove pulpal remnants and infected dentin from the canal while eliminating pathogenic bacteria. It is essential to maintain proper canal anatomy while cleaning and shaping. The challenge for the practitioner is to select a rotary file system that will be flexible enough to maintain canal anatomy but strong enough to prevent breakage under normal use. File flexibility allows for better maintenance of canal anatomy. A file’s resistance to torsional fatigue reduces …
Least-Squares Mapping From Kinematic Data To Acoustic Synthesis Parameters For Rehabilitative Acoustic Learning, Xiangyu Zhou
Least-Squares Mapping From Kinematic Data To Acoustic Synthesis Parameters For Rehabilitative Acoustic Learning, Xiangyu Zhou
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Thousands of people suffer from dysarthria resulting from neurological injury of the motor component of the motor-speech system, and need to rely on alternative methods to communicate in daily life, such as body language or text-to-speech [1] . However, there are currently very few effective rehabilitative therapies for helping these patients improve their speech. Because of this, research is needed to develop better rehabilitative therapies. One such area of research is the use of involuntary acoustic learning. The Speech and Swallowing lab at Marquette University has an Electromagnetic Articulography (EMA) system to collect kinematic data and a software system called …

Video Game Interventions To Improve Cognition In Older Adults, David E. C. Marra
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Cognitive abilities decline as part of the normal aging process. Various non-pharmacological interventions are being studied in an effort to ameliorate this cognitive decline. Some of these interventions include computerized cognitive training, such as neuropsychological software (i.e., brain training games) and video games. A previous study in our lab found that older adults who played a brain training game or a video poker game showed similar cognitive gains. The purpose of the present study was to follow the methodological procedures of our previous study to try and determine if the positive effects seen for the brain training program and video …

Hazard ratios for provider type and tooth location were calculated using the Cox …
Viability Of Human Periodontal Ligament Fibroblasts After Storage In Save-A-Tooth, Emt Toothsaver And Hank's Balanced Salt Solution, Wonhee Lee
Master's Theses (2009 -)
Introduction: Viability of periodontal ligament (PDL) cells is a key prognostic factor fora replanted tooth following avulsion. Dehydration results death of PDL cells, which in turn causes ankylosis upon replantation, followed by replacement resorption. Hank’s Balanced Salt Solution (HBSS) has been recommended as the standard storage medium for an avulsed tooth. Save-A-Tooth and EMT Tooth saver (Dentosafe)are commercially available tooth storage media. With the best of our knowledge no study has yet compared these media for their effective tooth storage times. The aim of this invitro study is to evaluate Save-A-Tooth, EMT Toothsaver (Dentosafe), and HBSS for their effect on …

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers
Teens with autism spectrum disorder often exhibit sexual behaviors in public that are disturbing to parents, teachers, and peers. Some have proposed that such behaviors can be curtailed with hormonal suppression. There is information on the Internet suggesting that such medications work, and some reports in the peer-reviewed medical literature support these claims. Such medications can have serious side effects. In this paper, we present a case in which parents requested such treatment of their teenage son with autism spectrum disorder.

This law review examines whether EO 13211 was used to curtail environmental protection and natural resource conservation. The article begins with a review of the procedure required of federal agencies under EO 13211 and its associated documents. The paper then examines case law and published federal rulemaking proceedings and examines how federal agencies apply tests to evaluate the potential energy effect. The study concludes that EO 13211 strikes a reasonable …
Neural Activity Reveals Effects Of Aging On Inhibitory Processes During Word Retrieval, Ranjini Mohan
Neural Activity Reveals Effects Of Aging On Inhibitory Processes During Word Retrieval, Ranjini Mohan
Open Access Dissertations
Word retrieval difficulties are one of the most frustrating problems in older adults. Poorer access to phonological (speech sound) representation of the target word has been postulated as the underlying deficit, supported by findings of improvement in word retrieval after phonological priming. But the great variability in naming performance among older adults may reflect cognitive scaffolding or compensatory neurophysiological processes related to maintenance or decline of naming abilities. In order better understand aging effects in the underlying neurophysiological changes associated with phonological retrieval, the present study examined electrophysiological correlates of phonological priming and word retrieval in adults across the lifespan. …

A Model To Predict Pre-Hospital Endotracheal Intubation Success, Leigh Ann Diggs
Health Services Research Dissertations
Background: Pre-hospital endotracheal intubation (ETI) is one of the most critical skills performed by paramedics and is considered the “gold standard” of airway management. Pre-hospital ETI success rates are variable, ranging from 33% to 100% across EMS systems in the U.S. Previous investigative efforts have identified factors associated with pre-hospital ETI success, but the generalizability of findings is limited. Few researchers have controlled for the concurrent effects of multiple factors when examining pre-hospital ETI success. Methods: In this retrospective exploratory study, we used national data from the National Emergency Medical Services Information System (NEMSIS) and data from a four state …

BACKGROUND—Despite renewed focus on molecular tuberculosis (TB) diagnostics and new antimycobacterial agents, treatment outcomes for patients co-infected with drug-resistant TB and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) remain dismal, in part due to lack of focus on medication adherence as part of a patient-centered continuum of care.
OBJECTIVE—To review current barriers to drug-resistant TB-HIV treatment and propose an alternative model to conventional approaches to treatment support.
DISCUSSION—Current national TB control programs rely heavily on directly observed therapy (DOT) as the centerpiece of treatment delivery and adherence support. Medication adherence and care for drug-resistant TB-HIV could be improved by fully implementing team-based patient-centered …

Inland water environments cover about 2.5 percent of our planet and harbor huge numbers of known and still unknown microorganisms. In this report, we examined water samples for the abundance, prevalence, and genetic diversity of a group of infectious viruses (chloroviruses) that infect symbiotic chlorella-like green algae. Samples were collected on a weekly basis for a period of 24 to 36 months from a recreational freshwater lake in Lincoln, Nebraska, and assayed for infectious viruses by plaque assay. The numbers of infectious virus particles were both host- and site-dependent. The consistent fluctuations in numbers of viruses suggest their impact as …

Many emerging pervasive health-care applications require the determination of a variety of context attributes of an individual's activities and medical parameters and her surrounding environment. Context is a high-level representation of an entity's state, which captures activities, relationships, capabilities, etc. In practice, high-level context measures are often difficult to sense from a single data source and must instead be inferred using multiple sensors embedded in the environment. A key challenge in deploying context-driven health-care applications involves energy-efficient determination or inference of high-level context information from low-level sensor data streams. Because this abstraction has the potential to reduce the quality of …

The adverse impact of ignoring multicollinearity on findings and data interpretation in regression analysis is very well documented in the statistical literature. The failure to identify and report multicollinearity could result in misleading interpretations of the results. A review of epidemiological literature in PubMed from January 2004 to December 2013, illustrated the need for a greater attention to identifying and minimizing the effect of multicollinearity in analysis of data from epidemiologic studies. We used simulated datasets and real life data from the Cameron County Hispanic Cohort to demonstrate the adverse effects of multicollinearity in the regression analysis and encourage researchers …
