The Effect Of The Cyp1a2 -163 C>A Polymorphism On The Metabolism Of Caffeine And Effect On Performance, Gabrielle E. Giersch May 2016

The Effect Of The Cyp1a2 -163 C>A Polymorphism On The Metabolism Of Caffeine And Effect On Performance, Gabrielle E. Giersch

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Prior studies from our laboratory suggest that the -163 C > A polymorphism of the Cytochrome P450 (CYP1A2) gene influences the ergogenic effect of caffeine. Although this polymorphism has been known to influence the inducibility of hepatic CYP1A2 and the rate of caffeine metabolism, levels of caffeine and/or metabolites have never been reported in these aforementioned studies (1, 12, 16). Thus, a mechanistic link between the polymorphism and the ergogenic effect of caffeine is lacking. The purpose of this study was to determine if the CYP1A2 polymorphism affected caffeine metabolism between the genotypes (AA homozygotes and C allele carriers). Twenty male …

Art is a very personal statement. When viewing art I look for pieces to which I can relate and enjoy, whether they are realistic or abstract. When I create a piece of art it is my personal observations, experiences and spiritual connection to the piece that helps me create it. After many years of working in charcoal, chalk pastels and acrylics, mostly creating art centered around the female form, I decided to try sculpting in clay. I found the experience to be really challenging, but enjoyable.

This piece is an attempt to bring many pieces of my life with my …

The Fourth Color, April Emily Drafts-Johnson

Senior Theses

This thesis centers around short stories based on the student's favorite author, David Sedaris. Sedaris is a modern humor essayist who uses experiences from his daily life to create vivid, “real-ish” stories to entertain his readers. In nursing and in life, there are interesting tales to be told. The following stories are imaginative events that are based on the author’s personal experiences. Stories about family, coming of age, reflections on life, and fictional recounts of time spent working odd jobs in the hospital are all divided into five themes—the human experience, making the best of it, loss, darkness, and light. …

The VAD Journal

Congenitally corrected transposition of the great arteries (CCTGA) is a rare congenital heart disease that commonly results in congestive heart failure due to exposure of the anatomic right ventricle to systemic pressures. Additional anatomic abnormalities, such as situs inversus, in which the viscera are mirror images of normal anatomy, or dextrocardia in which the heart apex is located on the patient’s right, once were contraindications to transplant in the treatment of advanced heart failure. However, recent advancements now allow for the management of heart failure through mechanical circulatory support and subsequent transplant. This case presents a 52 year-old man with …

Germline Defects Caused By Smed-Boule Rna-Interference Reveal That Egg Capsule Deposition Occurs Independently Of Fertilization, Ovulation, Mating, Or The Presence Of Gametes In Planarian Flatworms, Jessica Kathryne Steiner, Junichi Tasaki, Labib Rouhana May 2016

Germline Defects Caused By Smed-Boule Rna-Interference Reveal That Egg Capsule Deposition Occurs Independently Of Fertilization, Ovulation, Mating, Or The Presence Of Gametes In Planarian Flatworms, Jessica Kathryne Steiner, Junichi Tasaki, Labib Rouhana

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Few animals are known to lay eggs in the absence of ovulation or copulation, as it is presumably energetically wasteful and subjected to negative selection. Characterization of Smed-boule, a member of the DAZ family of germline RNA-binding proteins, revealed that egg capsule (or capsule) production and deposition occurs independently of the presence of gametes in the planarian flatworm Schmidtea mediterranea. Reduction of Smed-boule expression by RNA-interference (RNAi) causes ablation of spermatogonial stem cells and the inability of ovarian germline stem cells to undergo oogenesis. Although animals subjected to Smed-boule RNAi lose their gametes and become sterile, they continue …

Social Communication As An Early Indicator Of Autism In High-Risk Infant Populations, Alexis Marie Brewer May 2016

Social Communication As An Early Indicator Of Autism In High-Risk Infant Populations, Alexis Marie Brewer

Senior Theses

This senior thesis analyzes the social communicative profiles of children at high-risk for autism compared to typically developing controls. The project focuses specifically on the differences in initiating joint attention gaze shifts and joint attention gestures at 12 months in two high-risk groups, children with fragile X syndrome and younger siblings of children already diagnosed with autism. Their frequencies of gaze shifts and gestures were also analyzed to determine whether the joint attention behaviors are indicative of later autism symptom severity at 24 months.

Effect Of Epha4 Signaling Mutations On Auditory Function, Michelle R. Gerringer May 2016

Effect Of Epha4 Signaling Mutations On Auditory Function, Michelle R. Gerringer

Dissertations, 2014-2019

Neural pathways underlie the ability of the auditory system to perceive sound. Organization of neural pathways into functional auditory circuitry is accomplished in part by Eph and ephrin signaling proteins. One of these signaling proteins, the EphA4 receptor tyrosine kinase protein, acts as an axon-guidance molecule to aid in target selection and to maintain tonotopicity in the auditory brainstem and midbrain. Genetic mutations of the EphA4 protein have been shown to affect structural auditory development, but there is limited research which shows the functional effects of these mutations. The goal of the present study was to determine the functional effects …

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Interdisciplinary collaboration is an innovative, resourceful approach to healthcare intended to positively affect patient outcomes. The purpose of the present study was to determine the efficacy of the serial exposure to three treatments, Applied Behavior Analysis, Speech Language Pathology, and Occupational Therapy, in comparison with an exposure to a merge of these treatments on child outcomes. During the serial treatment phases of intervention, three licensed professionals implemented core techniques from their respective disciplines. During merged treatment phases, a graduate clinician combined and implemented techniques from all three fields: differential attention, request sequences, sensory exposure, verbal/tactile cueing for postural alignment/control and …

Are There Bad Wins And Good Losses? Outcome Effects In Sport, Richard Erik Inglis May 2016

Are There Bad Wins And Good Losses? Outcome Effects In Sport, Richard Erik Inglis

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Abstract

Outcomes have been shown to distort feeling states, performance evaluations, and subsequent performances. This retrospective distortion represents an outcome bias, a phenomenon that has been studied extensively in a wide array of disciplines and domains. However, despite their importance, the effects of outcomes have received little attention in the sport corpus. In an attempt to remedy this oversight, 60 participants with basketball experience were recruited to take part in a free throw shooting competition. Participants completed two rounds of 20 free throws. Following their first round, participants were randomly assigned to either a negative outcome (lose by one shot) …

A Mixed Methods Analysis Of The Relationship Between Attachment, Post-Traumatic Stress, And Post-Traumatic Growth Among United States Service Members, Chauncy T. Brinton

Dissertations, 2014-2019

The impact of secure military relationships on US service members’ response to trauma during military service was examined in this mixed methods study. Veterans with and without combat exposure evidence a high rate of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the military has tried to institute resilience-based programs in anticipation of the psychological challenges experienced by soldiers. At the same time, research has shown that some service members report positive outcomes associated with military service including the phenomena of post-traumatic growth (PTG). The constructs from attachment theory (safe haven and exploration) have begun to be the focus of research with service …

Zn(Ii), Cu(Ii), Sn(Ii), And Ni(Ii) And Other Metal Cations Do Not Prevent The Aggregation Of Hiapp, Charles Hoying May 2016

Zn(Ii), Cu(Ii), Sn(Ii), And Ni(Ii) And Other Metal Cations Do Not Prevent The Aggregation Of Hiapp, Charles Hoying

Honors Thesis

The Zn(II) metal ion has been shown to interact with Islet Amyloid Polypeptide (IAPP), a protein implicated in the progression of Type II Diabetes Mellitus, in such a way as to prevent the protein from aggregating into toxic fibers. We set out to find whether other metal ions might similarly prevent IAPP aggregation. Using Thioflavin T (ThT) spectroscopic assays, which measure fluorescence of ThT upon binding to aggregated IAPP, we observed a decrease in aggregation when incubated with Zn(II), Cu(II), Ni(II), and Sn(II). Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), which can visualize fibril formation, revealed that the metals were not inhibiting IAPP …
